I suspect the shafts are curved to allow the bearing to move on them without restriction when the main shaft 'flexes' with the suspension components. Sort of like train wheels going around a curve in the tracks. The grinding noise may be from a wheel bearing.

Kenny, good to hear from you, yes noises and vibration can be transmitted through structures. Investigating the auto engage rear diff at the moment, thinking it's in permanent four wheel drive. Cheers

I apply waxoyl to bolts to stop them rusting. I've had rumbling noises from wheels out of balance.

Yes it's vital to lube up fittings, just makes life easier next time, cheers

I think those are Oetiker clamps. The proper tool is fairly inexpensive (€30 or so). Good luck with the further diagnosis, these kind of problems can be really tedious and time consuming...

Thanks for the info, I've never had much luck with those clamps, but this method seems to work. Yes we may be into plenty of video experiments, first the dual pump fluid, cheers

I think the bearings oscillate rather than rotate, the metal clips often have a “ bridge” section which is squeezed with pincers after being latched. I wondered about the harmonic ? balancer on the shaft if it has stopped flexing with age and rubber hardening. If it’s “permanent 🙀 4x4 and shouldn’t be it will show up worse on a full lock turn ( tyre scrubbing) best of luck 🌝

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm going to change the rear dual pump fluid because the fault is intermittent (might be temperature relative). If that doesn't cure it, it may be a case of letting it develop, cheers

@@TheInfoworks I assume the “ hydraulic “ oil is not the same as the “ diff “ oil. With the Haldex system putting the right oil in the correct filler hole needs triple checking to avoid 💥 🫣. I noted the Honda needs changing every 36k

Yes it's dual pump fluid II and it's quite thin. I changed it about 25K ago but the previous oil was filthy, so maybe some fresh oil will cure things. Could be, as it seems to be worse in the cold. The new oil arrived this afternoon, cheers @@pollywollydo

Trouble at mill, I think it's the rear diff fluid, cheers

@@TheInfoworksCopper grease is great for parts. Take her for a spin and make sure the engine is warm before you change the rear diff oil. Try turning the drive shaft by hand, there shouldn't be too much slop in it.

Chasing noises is a real pain, but yes I'll warm her up before changing that oil. If it turns out that it's running four wheel drive then fuel consumption will be improved when it's fixed, cheers @@TheToolnut
