HONDA D16 REBUILD - D16Y8 - VTEC - EJ8 CIVIC

I feel like doing the same thing . I got money to blow on the car but there’s quite a few things. First off is the motor that my civic has which is a d16y8 with a manual transmission . Has some grinding issue going into 3rd. What do you guys recommend me doing . Lets say I have about 1500-2000$ I can spend on it . New motor? Rebuild engine? Engine has about 204k miles on it. Car sometimes starts and sometimes doesn’t. I think its the main replay on the passenger side. Or it could be the fuel pump. Still not to sure. Would be nice if I could get a reply. If rebuilding the engine is best. How much was the rebuild kit for the engine? What would you have done differently ?

To be completely honest, the rebuild kit came from rock auto. It was about a day of work with the right tools but a few things were a little bit different and caused some trouble. The rock auto oil pump was packaged well but had studs that broke due to a hole being drilled down the middle. Also the front crank seal wasn’t the proper size and had to be replaced almost immediately. The valve seals were extremely brittle as well. Overall I would recommend the bearings, pistons, rings and gasket set but I’d lean more towards an oem oil pump and valve seals to eliminate the headache. It’s still running to this day with no issues or leaks!! The rebuild only cost about 350 so if you have a little time just check tolerances and crank wear then give it a shot if you’d like.

I mixed up my piston how do I know where the piston 1234? Are there any markings on the piston? Or rods?

I would recommend felpro to eliminate risk. It worked for a while and failed. The coating had delaminated causing a leak.

No bank one oxygen sensor. Had shop build an exhaust but new exhaust was missing the threaded bung

To be completely honest, it worked great for a few months. The head gasket did fail later as well as the timing belt. Felpro head gasket and duralast belt are holding up awesome though! Everything else from the kit worked flawlessly
