I could listen to your voice all day - you have such a nice, no-frills attitude to your video producing, without resorting to overly exciting tones or crazy gestures or faces - such a beautiful contrast to many other takes on similar ideas. You seem to care much about the functional design, fitting shapes and quality execution, but still manage to work with inexpensive materials, that fit the intended purpose. Also nice to see the roundover plane in action. I like that conversion project a lot. Cheers, Micha.

Question, though: your mattress is cut into the 3 pieces. Do you have any issues with the mattress pieces sliding around when the bed is fully extended? Or perhaps sinking through the seam in the middle? I made this bed and it turned out beautifully! Thank you for the incredible detailed plans :)

it is a real kick for me to see how all the forms you made so carefully with the bendsaw are fitting like a glove. Wow! That must be really satisfying. I'm always struggling with the round and bending contours in my Kangoo, even when i'm using cardboard or paper, it always differs a few milimeters.. grrr. So I produce a lot of molds before i can make my definite element. Great work and fascinating to watch you work.

I would be very curious to know this as well! Are you talking about a compost toilet? I’m guessing you could add a hinge to the front section from the side wall support so it lifts up making it accessible. I’m sure it would need a latch to hold it up or maybe a little hydraulic strut. Just brainstorming but that may be nice to have for the whole bed to access stored gear for when it’s raining or you don’t want to get out at night. Amy, absolutely love your work!

exactly what i built in my truck. currently in back of my truck. however it’s 24 inch wide, but i can pull it out and will give more room for 2 person to sleep on. but i’m traveling alone so i have more room on the side of the bed. edited the real reason i built it is cuz of my truck bed inside is 68 inch long and i’m 72 inch tall (6 feet tall) so i have to sleep bit side than front to back. that style of pull out frames helps lot.

Your beyond awesome Amy! Question: How did you scribe / contour / layout to the side 'wall' and transfer it all to the various wood pieces that make up that side of the platform?
@AmyMakesStuff
@AmyMakesStuff 5 жыл бұрын
I'll do my best to answer in text, but might need to make a video later: I put a piece of cardboard at the desired platform height. Then I taped a stick perpendicular to a pencil. I kept the stick pointed in the same direction as I dragged it across the contour of the car and transferred that contour to the cardboard. Then I would cut the cardboard to that line and do a test fit. Each curve usually took some tweaking afterwards to get right.

Hey Amy, this is fantastic! I’m trying to modify your design to utilize more space on the left hand side, since I do not plan on putting a shelf in. What would be the best method to add width? Just add a few inches to the slat measurements?
@AmyMakesStuff
@AmyMakesStuff 3 жыл бұрын
Yup! That’s probably the easiest way. Add the same amount to all the slats. With more width, you do have to opportunity to make parts of it thicker and stronger than I was able to make mine, but likely it’s not necessary.

@@AmyMakesStuff I'm currently tweaking your desing in fusion 360 to also allow for full width pull-out, accounting for keeping the left side bucket seat installed (have children, will travel). The thing about it that makes this mod complex is that leaving that seat installed will mean eating into the truss/scribe space. My fusion skills are limiting in this regard, so it might come to making pieces long and just penciling in the needed changes to the stationary section in the real world. Your plans are so thorough, though. So useful and appreciated. Do you have a venmo/patreon?

This looks great! Before I start building this based on your measurements, I am wondering if you have to have the front passenger seat pushed all the way forward for this to fit? I feel like 66 inches in length may only be achieved with the seats pushed forward. My passenger might be uncomfortable if this is the case. I might just have to build shorter? Thanks!!
@AmyMakesStuff
@AmyMakesStuff 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have to be all the way forward, but yes, it could potentially limit the leg room of the passenger. My partner is 6” tall, pretty leggy. He says it’s fine though. You can always cut it shorter by a slat or two. This can even be done after you build it.

Hi Amy, I'm said roommate of Brian who commented recently and is going to build the bed. Are the two pillows you have as back rests when the bed is a couch what you use as the wider mattress for the wider bed? Do you happen to have a handy link for the mattress you purchased and cut? I'm grateful I found your channel and ingenuity. Thank you so much for sharing so generously!
@AmyMakesStuff
@AmyMakesStuff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Meghan! Yes, the back rests form the rest of the mattress. Unfortunately the mattress that I purchased was discontinued years ago. The key is to find a mattress of the right thickness, not just a mattress pad or topper (those tend to just be soft foam that let you sink all the way down to the frame). Things advertised as mattresses should be firmer or have a layer of firmer foam that prevents you from sinking all the way through.
