Honda Goldwing this is my review of the Honda GL 1800 Goldwing, you don’t have to spend a fortune to buy a great luxurious touring bike. The Goldwing I am using in this video is the 07 GL 1800 with the six cylinder motor, hopefully you enjoy my review and it gives you an insight into what it is like to own and ride one of these beautiful motorcycles. Please feel free to leave a comment and thanks for watching, cheers.

My 2003 is in Jupiter Orange, another rare colour made only in 2003 which first attracted me to this bike. Superb machine with few problems other than sticky switches which need service or replacement every 10 years. I have 135K kilometers on it and it's barely broken in. Honestly, it runs and looks like the day it came off the showroom floor. I did have to add a custom seat and floorboards to accommodate my long legs but once done, there is simply no other motorcycle that comes close to it regarding personal comfort. At 80, I can still drive 500KM's a day and get off refreshed....can't even do that with either of my cars. With good maintenance, you will never wear this machine out...

@@standupmoto Some 29 years ago, I was about to get out of motorcycling altogether. One day I went to the dealer who just finished selling my Kawasaki Vulcan 1500. I was about to pick up the cheque when my wife pointed me towards this very slightly used beautiful orange Gold wing on the showroom floor. She asked the salesman to start it up and it purred like a kitten. My wife turned to me and said. " if you don't buy that bike, you are crazy". W.E..L..L..with a "come on" like that, I pulled out my cheque book and bought it on the spot. This was one of the best decisions I have ever had made in my 67 years of bike riding, and I have since made untold numbers of friends that I would never have met had I not bought this bike. I hope your Wing gives you as much pleasure as mine has given me the last 18 years or so. I also LOVE the colour of your bike....

I bought my first bike, an 04 Goldwing. The little neighborhood kids always wave on their little bikes. The bright orangy-red, what few chrome accents it has and what sounds like cobra exhaust is a chic magnet. She is a beautiful girl. My longest ride has been four hours across Georgia. I installed highway pegs last week and now I'm ready for longer rides. I can pack a weeks worth of clothes, a pair of sneakers, and a tent in the storages. I shopped few years for a bike and when I sat on the Goldwing and heard that big motor, that was it. When I found one in my price range, I jumped on it, In my opinion, even though I have never owned another bike, the Goldwing is top dog.

Looking at a 5th gen Wing and I must say that this is the most comprehensive motorcycle review that I have ever seen, and I have seen most of them. A special thanks to your wife for helping to support my decision, as my wife is my reason for getting a bike of this type and her comfort is paramount. Much appreciation to the both of you.

Glad it was helpful John & thanks for the special thanks to my wife, she appreciated it. We’ve had this bike for a while now and our views have not changed, in fact they’ve only grown stronger. The Goldwing truly is a beautiful ride (albeit not the most fuel efficient) but that’s an acceptable trade off for the comfort & smooth 6cyl power, my only real complaint is I didn’t get one years ago. 👍

This might be the best review ever, starting at 33:04 where you totally surprised me, and most folks I'm sure. You are obviously a well seasoned rider as this would be outside of most Goldwing owners comfort zone, but I'm glad to see you fearlessly carved up some bush. I know down under they call the Suzuki DR650 the bush pig, well you just took that title away from the Dr. Zed and slapped it right on the wing! Nice!

Hi mate, thanks glad you enjoyed it. have had a couple or DRs, good mount for sure. The Goldwing despite its bulk can hit some reasonable trails so long as clearance doesn’t become an issue and not to much sand.

Wow, thanks Tom. I certainly enjoy making the videos and would feel like I am cheating my viewers if I didn’t give as much information as I can. I’m no expert by any means and am learning with every review, I just call it as I see it and try to relay the information I would want to know if I were in the market for that particular motorcycle. thanks again. It's amazing to ride and so comfortable that I look forward to each and every ride. I've been binge watching goldwing videos for the past week and a half to familiarize myself with all the features and just watching others enjoy the bike. Keep riding and be safe.

Outstanding review. I owned a black GL 1500 for about 1.5 years, great bike with no issues when I sold it. Then, a week later I bought my red 2002 GL 1800 with ABS. I've had it now 2.5 to 3 years to date 2022. I don't have heated seats or grips, but my heated gear works very well. Big solid strong bike with lots of throttle. My plan is to purchase the last model of this generation which is the 2017 which is hard to find.

Oh yes we’re thinking of getting another all these years later and touring Europe again. Great review! I have the 06 GL1800. Fantastic bike. I could ride it all day long. Great for touring and enjoying the landscape around you. Mine is the Deep burgundy color, almost like a black cherry. I live in Ohio, USA and ride it until they throw salt on the ground. Then I wait for a good rain. You explain it well enough. Love the color of your bike. Thanks for sharing. P.S. PUT THE COZY WINGS ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR MIRROR. Keeps the cold air of your hands in the winter. And gives you good air flow in the summer. Bolts right up to your Existing screw at the bottom of the mirrors.

Steve. Liked the tone and content. Great to hear someone who doesn’t have to have the newest or best but simply ENJOYS. I am early in the process myself but everything about the bike attracts me,,,,,,,except the complexity. I bought mine at an auction sight unseen with a flat battery so no kms known. It had rodent damage and the upper bodywork was removed and in a box. Took a gamble and really didn’t pay a lot for it. When home I powered it up and it had 35k and had a higher level of corrosion than I was expecting. It actually fired up and ran. The engine spooled up ok but wouldn’t come off a fast idle. Turned out about six wires had been cut by chewing and other damaged. Back to the only down side I can see is the complexity, not the technology but the immense amount of hoses and wires and inaccessibility. I bought an’01 with 35k. The process of repair has been a headache but highlights the problem that produces everything about the Goldwing that is good. It’s size, comfort, weather protection and luggage capacity, it’s engine. There is so much of it and it is all so hidden that keeping the corrosion at bay is nearly impossible and it is a haven for rats to hide and chew that I am sure other low use storage type owners are having problems with even if they don’t know it yet. There are a lot of parts for early bikes that are no longer available. The wiring harness being one. They were about mid one thousand dollars when new. While in disassembly I found there is a problem with early bikes with the self reset ratchet lock mechanism on the windscreen adjuster. The lock tab plate was missing on mine as they had a known problem. There was a propensity for the small part to fall out and a later replacement is available but it is not clear whether the part can be replaced or the whole component group. Either way it doesn’t prevent the screen from being used. I reset mine manually by some disassembly and gradually with a series of trial rides I raised the screen one notch at a time until I was happy with the screen height and then just left it there. I come from a background of simple bikes, R series BMWs and I am a bit overwhelmed by the bikes complexity. Removing the wiring harness is a thing to generate nightmares. I produces enough ideological gravity to pull ones motorcycling outlook to a different place. Hard to explain but I have found myself changing the way I look at machinery. Maybe maintain but never recondition.....?use till it’s stuffed and then bin it. The thought of a really high mileage Goldwing where everything is worn out, cracked or deteriorated is overwhelming and it seems such a shame to use up such a great bike. Sorry for the ramble but I am a little off kilter having had my centre reset, if that makes any sense. Good video, tone great, easy to listen to. You have all the makings of a good presenter. I enjoy that you can impart that you enjoy. Cheers Stephen Tas’.
@standupmoto
@standupmoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve, no apologies needed for rambling - I’m as guilty as it gets there. So first up I’m glad you enjoyed the video, I love making them. I’m no Goldwing expert by any means but a full workshop manual is a must I believe when as you we do our own work on these older wonderful machines. You’ve taken on a mighty task re-wiring a Goldie for sure but you’ll get there eventually, maybe even keep an eye out for a crash damaged one that you can cannibalise the harness I’m sure the bits you don’t use would be salable to other owners via Facebook Goldwing sites. Thirty five k!! she’s just run in, keep slogging away at it and you’ll have a great bike at the end. It’s been a while since I put that video up and I’ve become far more familiar with this bike since then, I’ve actually ridden most of winter this year. Not something I generally do but this bike with its creature comforts & wind protection have made it a pleasure, I truly believe the Goldwing is one of the greatest purpose motorcycles ever made (just my opinion). As far as presenter goes I just try to say it as it is, I do my own camera work and fumble my way through the editing process. It’s been a steep learning curve for me but I thoroughly enjoy it. I really have no idea how to promote my channel etc but I’m learning, this is so far removed from my life prior to KZbin and unfortunately I don’t have anyone within my circles that has any knowledge of vlogging. Anyhow that’s my ramble, good luck with your project and feel free to contact me if there’s anything I may be able to help with. Cheers.

It’s good to hear a Aussie review on the bike, I currently own a 03 model ST1300 which I call the baby Goldwing. I love long distance riding, me & the misses rode from Port Macquarie to Adelaide & back to visit our grandkids, we both love it but she didn’t like the G- forces when we needed to over take trucks or caravans. She told me she’ll only do it again on a Goldwing, mind you she does suffer from back & shoulder pain sometimes we both in our mid to late 50’s & I ride every day for a job also ride a 07 ktm 640 adventure which I’ve owned for 8mths. Hopefully later in the year I trade up from ST to a Goldwing still like to keep the ST tho 👍👍 thanks heaps on the insight for what to look for cheers
@standupmoto
@standupmoto Жыл бұрын
Gday Andrew Thanks mate glad you enjoyed the review. I also had the ST and loved it, it was a great bike for sure and somewhat sportier through the twisties than the wing. In saying that with descent tyres (I run the Bridgestones) the Goldwing can certainly surprise a lot of riders, it’s no sports bike but you can make it hustle. I toured a lot on the ST and it served well with good range between fills (something that does annoy me on the wing) not that I would have thought so at the time if you’d told me when I had the ST the Wing is in a league of its own. It’s smoother quieter offers more protection from the elements has all the luxuries and is heavier which of course adds stability on the open road. Having reverse is just the bee’s knee’s and the comfort for the passenger is unparalleled, you could seriously go to sleep in not on but in the rear seat. I also have a BMW K1600 which is a rocket and also a tourer but I’ll take the wing every time if I’m doing distance, even if I’m riding solo. I’ve done a lot of KMS since doing that review and I love it even more now, as I said the only thing that annoys me is the comfortable range (about 320 Kms per tank) not that it’s over thirsty it’s just a small tank. If your doing big Kms I personally think the wing is second to none, and the Mrs will love you. Cheers

I must admit that I had opinion about the goldwing, that is for older people, but I’m pretty much sure after one hour on this machine I will be hooked up so badly. Wish you all the best in 2024. Thanks for your time to share with us very useful information. Cheers 🍻

Thank you Milovan, yes I understand what you are saying. My only regret with the Goldwing is that I didn’t get one 20 years ago. The comfort and level of protection allow you to ride far more often and much further than any motorcycle I’ve had before.

I had a candy apple red 1000 mL Goldwing, as you say stripped when I was in my 20s and enjoyed it immensely, it was smooth and responsive and fun to drive! I know on a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan nomad 1500 cc.

A very comprehensive review, I was deciding between a used Goldwing and a BMW R1200 RT and I think you just about convinced me, as one of the other reviews below its to carry my wife around on long distance drips. And I'm glad to see its an OZ review.

Thanks Michael glad you enjoyed it, I’ve done many kms on both. I love both but the Wing wins the long distance travel battle, the RT is the sportier of the pair but for sheer comfort of both the rider & passenger it’s the Goldwing. The big 6 is silky smooth so hand tingles are a non event even after a long haul of 9 or 10 hours, the pegs are perfectly positioned. Try both, your knees may be in better shape than mine. But as far as passenger comfort goes, my wife says it’s like sitting in an armchair. Weather protection is excellent also, you’ve even got feet heaters. Ok they are the pros now the cons, the tank isn’t really big enough. 350kms v 450 on the RT, in the twisties the Goldi is fun but no sports bike for sure. I guess the long & short of it is see if you can get a ride on both and preferably for a longer ride, you’ll work it out.👍

Great review. I ride a VStrom 650 XT which I purchased new in 2018; currently done 48,000 km great bike. I have always admired the Goldwing, and when I was at my local dealer a year or so ago they had a Goldwing for sale. I am 79 now but I said to the salesman I was talking to that I love the Goldwing but I think I am too old to own one. He told me that the one I was admiring had just been sold to a guy 85 years old I was blown away and left there with a spring in my step.

I really want to know what the limit is of a well maintained mile muncher. 100k miles for most motorcycles is clapped. A honda grom wont even get close usually. A dr650 might but theyre also basucally dirtbikes so they get beat on dropped lots adventuring. Thus bad boy i bey you could go 500k miles if you were really serious about keeping the fluids clean etc. I just saw a video some guy took one with 200k on a pretty good roadtrip. I cant believe hes lane splitting it.

Hi Steve, great name and a great review on the Big Wing. I just purchased my first one and it’s 2002 model in a standout yellow pearl, I spent 20 hours detail it and it came up like new and my wife and I just stand there and admire it in the garage. I’ve only had it for a week and rode it home from Horsham Victoria vis Echuca and dropped it off to Honda for a full service and all round fluid change, it’s only got 70,561 klms on it and it’s beautiful and in our eyes better looking than the newer models. My wife rides too and I met her when she was riding a BMW 650 and I was on a Honda CB1100RD which I ended up giving to her when I bought a Honda VF1000R and she ended up putting 122,000 klms on it. We have owned many bikes over the years and this is something that we can just pack up and go away for long weekends and enjoy the comfort and feeling.

Gday, congrats on getting your first Wing, problem you’ll have now is nothing else will compare for touring if ever you decide to change 😄 They are a great machine, I’m about to put out another video on Goldwings! Great to hear your wife rides also, she’s obviously not shy about clocking up the kms! 70K is nothing for these sweet 6cyl motors, I’ve had plenty of correspondence from riders in the US with 100k miles (160k) on them and still running great. Look after her, good oil & maintenance and you & your wife will have many years of Rolls Royce touring ahead 👍

Great review Mate! Mine is a 2012; it is my second Wing (previously a 1500 when the kids were little! Now they're adults we could get another one!). Absolutely love the bike and echo your comments; one thing I would HIGHLY recommend to any 1800 owners is to get a set of Helibars for your Wing. The difference from the standard bars is like night and day. If you thought the bike was comfortable before the Helibars, you will be blown away afterwards (especially if you have a backrest)

Have only rode the Gold Wing since 1975, when it was introduced. Have had a 1975, 1981 Interstate, 1982 Aspencade and now 2009 Audio Comfort model . I don't need or desire any other bike as this one meets all of my needs. Your review is very good. When you say you're not an expert on it I disagree. You took that wing down that gravel road faster than I would. However if I have good pavement, and twists roads I ride it very fast so much that a Ducati rider behind me was having trouble catching up. He said that if a Gold Wing could do the corners that fast then he could too. Welcome to Wing World.

Hi. Nice video, thanks. You asked for other riders' experiences? I bought a 1984 1200 Aspencade just after lockdown. It was bought as 'a bit of a laugh'. Just to experience it for a couple months then sell it on. 2 years later, it's going nowhere!! What a bike!! It just has a huge grin factor, you can do the big shop on it, you can jump on it to go touring in (almost) complete trust at 38 years old. It handles pretty well (especially if you've only ever ridden giant trailies with 21' front wheels 🤣. But the main thing? The Grin Factor! Downsides? Only one - finding shops willing to work on her.

I've had three goldwings and they are the best bikes I've ever owned. I live in central Alberta Canada and have ridden my 2010 to Northern California towing a trailer and two up. No hiccups at all with the bike. I did learn to stay away from any kind of sand as it makes the bike extrememly hard to control. I was at sturgis on year on my 1989 Goldwing and harley drivers (even though they didn't want to) did admit that for long haul bike trips the Goldwings are by far the better bike for that. My wife has a habit of falling asleep in the back as it is so comfortable, heated seats, heated grips etc. The navigations system is useless as it outdates quickly and you can't really get updates for them so I just run my smart phone bluetoothed into my helmet or hard wired to the radio.

Does it burn oil? It is shaft drive too. Ive had a shaft drive motorcycle before from the 80s as my first bike and it was incredible. It was a 1983 honda cx650 custom. Shaft drive was nice because I rode a ton which was important when youre first lesrning to ride and I didnt have to do any tedeous maintinance. It was a transverse vtwin so you could pop the spark plug wire right out of the side. Frankly it was so easy im suprised my spark plugs never got stolen. I could disconnect a cylinder by popping off the spark plug wire with my hand while I was riding. It was 33 years old when I got it at 18. That shaft drive lasted 33 years until I sold the bike to a buddy who sold it to some guy that destroyed the bike but it was everything else failing and not the shaft drive. The shaft drive was built different.

This is the most comprehensive motorcycle review I’ve seen on KZbin. I own a 2015 Gold Wing, 40th Anniversary Edition. I use it mostly for cross-country rides across the U.S. and Canada. It’s a joy to ride. It’s powerful, it handles beautifully, and it’s the most comfortable bike I’ve ever owned. Riding many consecutive 10-hour days while covering 500-600 miles per day is no problem on this bike. The only problem that I’ve had with it is the notorious low-speed steering wobble that I hope to cure soon with a fork brace; otherwise, it’s a nearly perfect bike! Thanks again for a great review.

Cheers mate glad you enjoyed it, it’s nice to hear. I do get the occasional “ the video is too long “ comment, and I know my videos do tend to be a bit longer than most but I feel like I would be short changing the viewer if I didn’t give all of my observations. Thanks for your feedback as an owner. 👍

Check out Traxxion Dynamics suspension out of Marietta Georgia. Your tite will stop cupping and their fork brace is very good too.

I own a 2019 Goldwing and I only have two complaints. 1.The factory seat is not as comfortable during long rides as I expected for a touring bike and 2. the foot peg position is too far rearward. If Honda corrected those two things I would give the bike a 10 out of 10 score. But even with those things I still rate the bike 8.5 out of 10. It truly is an amazing machine.

Hi Eric, interesting observations of the 2019GW. I haven’t spent any time on your model but I am of the understanding Honda adopted a little more sporty ergonomics with your version which may explain the peg position. I have met many owners of the later shape like yours and they all say as you do, it’s a truly amazing machine. Thanks for the feedback, ride safe. Cheers.

I’ve had painful periods on all the bikes I’ve had. For the last four tourers I’ve used a Bead Rider seat cover. My first one was $35 but isn’t recall what I paid for the seat on my 2015 40th Anniversary edition. It lets air under your tail and eliminates hot spots bare vinyl or leather can cause. Much cheaper than a new seat.

I am driving also many years; I had many bikes, cross, chopper, touring, super-fast and super slow😁😁😁😁. I like everything with 2 wheels. 3 years ago I sold my BMW 1300GT and bought my 2008 Goldwing. I always thought this is a big boring bike, but is surprised me that this is the top of all motorcycles. My wife likes also to sit on the back and we make long travels.

great video, my friend, as you said , it all started in `75 with the first naked Goldwing, build as a sportsbike, a very heavy one at that, lol, i was 18 then and loved it but had no money for something big and expensive like that, so,,,,,, many years later i bought a 1200 interstate but 5 months later i went for the 1200 Aspencade, drove that for about 5 years then went for the basic 1500, after 8 years got me a 1500 Aspencade again, drove that one for about 14/15 years, then i did the big jump in 2006, to an `03 Gl 1800, Candy Durango Red, BEST bike ever, lol, ANYWAY, just about everything you say about the Wing is completely true, its a awesome machine thats build for the long distance but surprises everybody when you get into town with its handling, its also WAYYYY faster then all those sportbikes think, lol, i went for a drive in the France Alpes, there its not the TOPSPEED that counts, i was with a couple of sportsbikes and naked bikes, gueas what, showed many of them my taillights, in THIRD GEAR its just as fast in those winding roads as there bike but also has MORE TORQUE, so when they had to shift,,,,, i just stayed in third, giving me the upperhand, lol, didn't hurth that by then i had about 45 years experiance and about 30 years Goldwing behind me, lol. i'm 65 at the moment, about the Wing,,,, never hed any real problems with them, except de DYNAMO of my second 1200, but that was a known problem with those models, always did most of the maintenance myself and indeed , the airbox is a bit hidden inside, never mind, just takes a bit longer, thats all, i'm happy to say i never had a flat tyre in all tose years, except for when i had my CBX 1000, i found some real damage on my rear tyre (no leak) that i had for,,,,,,, 1 week, (SHIT), so i had to replace that one twice in 2 weeks, o well, shit happens, i have to say that i do love the older taillights of the Wing way more then the new ones they use now, there NOT ugly mind you, but i just like the older ones on the four corners more! i wish you and your girl many fun and beautiful kilometers, keep the shinysite up, greetings from the Netherlands, Roberto.

Great stuff Rob, I love hearing Goldwing stories. Yours started long ago and you still rate this wonderful machine & still ride one. I almost feel cheated that I didn’t find the Wing many years ago, ah well guess I’d better ride it as much as I can while I can. Thanks again for sharing your experiences, cheers mate.

Owned a 1975, 1979, 2010, now a 2018 GL1800 DCT absolutely love it and I tow a large deluxe time out tent camper trailer behind it , first time ever pulling a trailer! First year ride over 12,000 miles coast to coast in USA have had absolutely no issues with my 2018! The automatic DCT is so wonderful and sport mode is crazy! I've ridden through snow and ice pulling my camper trailer with absolutely no issues multiple times! Loved all my Honda Goldwings! Owned 2 different Moto Guzzi's, Yamaha Road Star 1700 which was I great motorcycle! But nothing like any of the Goldwings

Thanks and good luck with your hunt for a Goldwing. Try to find one that hasn’t lived outside, the plastics & chrome can get a bit weathered. Also the switch gear gets a bit stuck, and it goes without saying a good service history is always a good thing if you’re not mechanically minded. Cheers.
