I have just bought a brand new one of these and find it can hardly go threw a week long grass without getting clogged. Even cutting a half pass it starts bogging down. Can you recommend anything for this particular problem I normally don't use the bag as I have an acre of land but find it very strange for a brand new mower to hardly be able to make a full pass.

In my opinion the hrn216vya would probably outlast the hrc-216 with less problems than the commercial mower hrx-216. The hrc216 honda mower is a commercial mower and I think the hrn226vya would outlast the hrn216vya. If you are looking for a mower for a big lawn care business I actually think the hrn216vya could actually be a good choice even though it is residential. It is only $509. Got a HRH 536 (equivalent with HRC 216 here in europe). It was used; the carb was gunked up, paid just under 350$ for it because the owner didn't knew any better and thought it's toasted. In less than an hour it was purring like a kitten. Cleaned the carb bowl and jet, fresh oil, fresh gas and a mulching kit and now it's my main mower. A great jump in quality overall to my older mower, from how it feels to how it cuts. I'm impressed, it will last me a long time.

We run 2 honda HRCs about 6 and 8 years old. The most consistent problem we've had is exactly as you described in the rain when the mower starts to choke out and die. We notice it happen CONVENIENTLY every spring and fall while mowing in heavy rains (we are in abbotsford so we get the same weather). No one ever had an answer as to why that happened. Now I FINALLY know, thanks for putting that in this video! We are to update our small mowing fleet for this spring and are looking through many reviews for honda, toro, and exmark. Never thought about taking the top blade out and just using the bottom blade. I also get those "cornrows" as you call them from time to time.

My 28 year old HR2160 year 1992 is still going strong. My late father bought it in the mid 90s second hand & it’s still the mower I pick to use although I have younger mowers to choose from. Can’t beat a Honda engine. My left front wheel has the same height problem as well.

I’m not in the business, but I’m a homeowner that enjoys a good looking and healthy lawn and does what it takes to get it that way. Currently, i am seriously considering the 21” Honda, haven’t decided on Residential or the commercial series yet. The left tire, on the 2017 HRC216, not quite touching the ground is a serious issue. Furthermore, the issue was on the previous mower, same year model, indicate a serious design problem. Now, have you, or anyone out there, found out what the issue and solution is? Your description of this problem sounded like the deck was warped, but then, how could that be, how would pass quality control at the factory. Very fair, informative review, I greatly appreciated your work there.

No unfortunately I have not figured out why the wheel is like that on both mowers. I think for a homeowner I would suggest the residential version with the plastic style deck. In fact I recommended my neihbour get one and it’s a very nice mower. Very similar to the commercial version but his had the mulch on demand lever and electric key start. After I saw it I thought if I ever buy another Honda I may give that top of the line residential model a try just for the non rusting plastic deck and electric start. Thanks for watching.

I have an HRC2162 from around 2005. It is now 18 years old and going strong. I've replaced the starter rope three times, but the 2nd time I used a flimsy after market one. The only real problem I've had is the height adjust lever on the left rear tire is loose. I could probably fix it mechanically, but I just used a cable tie to keep it in place. I never really change the height. I will put my HRC2162 against any mower out there, but I'm not familiar with the mower market that much, so I'm just comparing it to what mediocre lawn mowers I see out there. If you want your HRC to last, change the oil depending on how much you run it, and clean the air filter. I use K&N.

I have used HR-216 mowers at my ranch, no where near the use of a commercial landscaper. I notice many gardeners use the Honda mowers with composite decks here in Oregon. They are about half the price, do not rust and are lighter. My primary reason for using the HR-216 is the engine which is the best Honda makes. The 216 is not a perfect machine it suffers from weight related issues that cause some of the problems you are having. The weight is a problem on wet ground as it will leave ruts and grass not mowed in the wheel tracks. As for the hydro-drive it needs to have regular service according to usage.

Great review and spot on with my experience. I have (probably) the same 2005 HRC-216 model and have used it to mow my 2 acres for 17 years! It's still running! The only reason I'm here is to source the blades and figure out the difference between some ORM numbers I was looking at. It took a couple of tries in the beginning to find the correct spark plug and air filter for this model. I kept ordering the parts for another mower. Finally sourced my winterizing kit from amazon and he's out of stock! So, I'm looking elsewhere and ran across your review. I too have had (a little) problem with the throttle cable loosening. Nothing I couldn't tighten up. Also had a bit of an issue come up once in a while where it starts just fine and dies within 10 seconds. Not a fuel problem. Turned out to be the air filter casing had worn or warped and didn't have the tight seal it used to. Grass and dirt would accumulate under the casing on the outside of the foam protector of air filter. I'd have to clean it off after every use. I happened to find a silicone like round rubber seal that I placed in the bottom of the air filter casing to make it air tight. Probably just Oklahoma dirt and limbs, but I have an issue with clippings accumulating on the underside of chassis. It can form into a brick like composite that I have to chisel out with a large screw driver! Again, just something I have to do sometimes. I still love this mower and am not looking forward to trying to replace it. Thanks for your review!

yep....I think the HOnda hrc216 is a go to mower that every lawn care biz should have. I listened to your recent podcast about weekly lawn care. I wanted to mention that I also have two of the 30 inch Exmark 30's. Because you mow in wet grass, I thought I should mention that the honda handles those conditions better. The 30's are fast when conditions are right, but they do clump up the deck a lot in wet thick conditions. They also have their own set of issues like transmission problems. In addition to that, you will want to keep spare belts and pulleys on hand for the 30's. That being said....I have two of them, and they get a lot of use! I wouldn't want to be without them, and I feel overall they are a profitable mower that is good on gas and easy to operate while being faster than the 21's. If you have any questions about the Exmark 30's...I am on the Lawnsite forum site and there is an Extensive thread on that site that I started years ago about the exmark 30's. At this point, that thread is over 130 pages long now...LOL. lots of info in there.

Ok great. Thanks for the input. I have heard similar about the Exmark 30’s in the rain. Generally how long would you say the belt need replacing, and when do you know to replace it? Thanks for watching.
@rbljackson5 жыл бұрын
Hard to answer that. I replace all 3 belts over the winter every year. Its the blade engagement belt that my need replacing during the year. If you hear the blades getting slow to engage, or not maintaining RPMs while cutting grass, its time to replace it. The trans belt lasts the longest. Keep a full set of belts, extra blades, one set of the alloy pulleys, and one of the pulleys that is part of the blade engagement arm. I also keep 2 extra air/pre filters, and one extra oil filter on hand at all times. All the parts ive listed above are the items to have available and minimize downtime. I should mention that I don't have a dealer near me so its important to have the parts here when things break down. I think you could definitely find efficiencies with the exmark 30 over the HRC. But than again, you have that 32 staris as well, so maybe not.

I have an HRC 216 but I’m having issues with the self propelled and idk if the self propelled can be replaced or fixed
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess3 жыл бұрын
What the issue? If the rear wheels are not going then I would check the ratchets in the wheels first. I’ve used the Honda’s for years and never had to replace a transmission. All the issues were always in the wheels. Inside the rear wheels there is a round ratchet device that has these little wings that spring open to grab notches in the wheel to make it go forward. When you pull the mower backwards the wings compress allowing the mower to roll backwards. They are what makes that clicking sound when you push a Honda mower. Over time they rust and get dirty and stop working. The little wings don’t open up to grab the wheel when the self propel is engaged. You can change them out in under 5 minutes. You will need to remove the bolt on the rear wheel plus use some vice grips to grab onto and lock the axle underneath the mower so you can loosen the bolt. I usually flip the mower on its side and put the vice grips on the axle close to the side your working on and gently put the mower back right side up so the vice grip handles are against the ground. This will lift the mower up slightly but stop the vice grips from turning as you loosen the wheel bolt. Take the bolt off and slide the wheel off. Either inside the wheel you will see the ratchet or sometimes it will be left on the axle as you slide the wheel off. There may be a big metal washer on it. The replacements were around $40 a few years ago. They are sold in either left or right so get the correct one for the side your replacing. In my experience the right rear on the discharge chute side needs replacing about 3x more then the left side. I believe that’s because the blade spins in that direction and directs a lot of dirt and moisture into that wheel. Put a new one in and it will be good as new. Thanks for watching.

I have had "ZERO," issues what so ever and I mean NADA!. Plug changed 6 times, 4 fuel filters, 8 air cleaners with the blade unit sharpened 3 times each on 2 new blades. I can honestly say that I could have gotten by with less maintenance upkeep, but old habits die hard. If I had to replace my HRC216 I would buy another just like it. Thats great that yours has done well for you but it no surprise. First of all it’s an older model and they were awesome. Much better than the current ones. I know because I’ve owned 3. One was a 2005 and was awesome. Then two newer ones in recent years and they did not compare to the older one and both started having issues after the first year. Second you are using yours on one property once a week. Completely different application. I use them in their intended purpose as a commercial mower in a business. I would also point out that I would mow more grass in a week or two with my hrc than you do in an entire year with your hrc. So completely different scenario. My videos are meant for lawn care business owners who will use the machines to put food on the table for their families, and put the machines in very tough conditions each day, and trailer them around. So it’s no surprise to me if a homeowner takes a commercial machine to mow their own property and it lasts many decades. Thanks for watching.

I changed the wheels to the newer 9" wheels that come on the hrx217 but no other mods and the only problem is the self propel has gotten weak. Still pulls itself but if going up a hill I basically have to push it.. Starts 1st pull everytime and never dies or bogs down even when cutting overgrown or wet grass. A guy is selling one of the 2005 hrc216 mowers for $300 that looks very nice like mine but I'm afraid to sell my reliable mower and buy the hrc if it's going to have problems.

Great review! You definitely have extreme mowing conditions out your way, I rarely have to mow in the rain so that increased the longevity of my HRC. One thing I did to speed up the mower pace is I removed the metal guard below fuel shut off and put the throttle spring into the bottom hole, then put shield back on obviously. That increased my RPM from 3000 to 3600 rpm, some dealers already update this setting for some, mine was not. I once was at the end of fence, hit bottom lever and had to retighten it. I use both blades but I managed to find the side discharge for mine, so now a days I don’t mulch as often, I use the rear discharge shoot, buddy it’ll mow through anything. Thanks for the video. @chrisbroesky2932 Жыл бұрын
@jeffa847 Ya it just means it's more sticky. It's an additive they put in it to make it tacky so it doesn't fling off out bearing and stuff as easy.

Do you have part # for the shim to use one blade on the HRC 216. I would appreciate if you would give it to me. Having same problem you have had with the two blades. Thank you.
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I don’t have a part number, but you could just ask your dealer to look it up. My equipment dealer told me about it and sold it to me. It’s basically a flat piece of metal the same thickness as the top blade with the holes drilled out in the same location for the bolts. Alternatively you could take an old top blade and just cut the ends off leaving the Center 6 inches or so leaving about an inch past the bolt holes on either side. Thanks for watching.

Sorry I don’t know the part number. My dealer is the one that told me about it. Alternatively you can take an old top blade and just cut the blade ends off leaving the middle 4-6” that the bolts go through. That’s all the shim is, a 4-6” piece of metal the same thickness as the top blade with the same bolt holes. Thanks for watching.

Do you have any advice for replacing the blades on the HRC216? Right now it has the twin blade mulching setup but they are worn out and I'm considering switching to a single rotary blade. Any recommendations?
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess3 жыл бұрын
On the Honda I would only use the bottom blade if you are bagging grass. Honda sells a shim that you put in place of the second top blade so that the bolts can tighten properly. Alternatively you could probably cut an old top blade so that it just the center 6” section with the bolt holes to act as a shim. That’s all the shim kit was. A piece of metal with the holes. As far as blades go I only ever used the original Honda blades. I have a huge stack of them from over the years. Thanks for watching.
@jeremytaylor40858 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, they specify a shorter bolt with single bagging blade.

Loose plastic bag with rub band over the cap will help keep it clean. Rub band goes around the cap not down the gas tank. Try it.

@@LawnCareBusinessSuccess I just bought a couple exmark 21 inch mowers and miss the cut of my Honda. Do you feel the cut quality is lacking on the exmark compared to the Honda?
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess5 жыл бұрын
No not at all for me. But remember I was only using one blade on the Honda and having issues with cut quality. Corn rows on one side of uncut strips of grass and almost scalping on the other side. If you look at my Instagram account you can see a bunch of pictures of the same properties. Ones done with the Honda then the same lawn a month later with the exmark. Thanks for watching.

I'm curious as to why you have so much problems with your newer mowers. Your older unit is the K2 (version 3), as it uses the EXACT same bubble deck your newer mower. It also uses the same 9" tires, etc. The engine cover on your older unit is different (as is the tank) but 90% of everything else is the same. BTW, the tank is inter-changeable from the old unit to the newer engine.
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a advertisement for exmark. If you look back through my content you will see me complaining about these issues for over a year before even using exmark or working with them. In fact, it was because of these issues that I started looking for alternatives and would post polls on Instagram looking for feedback on alternatives for the Honda. I’m also not the only one. Many of the guys in my area have switched as well. I hope the issues get addressed. If they can get it perform like the original one I had then it would be hard to beat. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the informative review! Dang, lots of problems compared to your original! I JUST picked up an HRC this week. Mowed my front lawn only just to try it out. I am a homeowner and got 18 mostly trouble free years out of my HRM 215 with the 140GX engine on it. Shoot, I hope I made the right decision. I only put 50-60 hours a year at most on my mower. (homeowner only) I mow from March until November, and like to mulch if possible. Some things I noticed from my old mower- 1) Even at the slowest setting, this HRC mower goes really fast! My old mower had the 1,2,3 speeds. And I feel that at the slowest setting on the HRC hydro tranny, it goes as fast as the number 2 setting on my old HRM. 2) Even though this HRC weighs about 40+ pounds more than my old mower, it pulls backwards more easily. The HRC has far less drag (like none) than my HRM. 3) The HRC has TONS more power than my old one. 4) The HRC is built like a tank. Super heavy duty, which IMO is a good thing. 5) The wheel adjustments are different than my HRM and the HRX mowers. The settings start in the middle of the mower deck and go up to 4". Again, these are my impressing after only 15 minutes of use. I like it much more than my old HRM mower. I mow my lawn 2-3 times a week during the spring and fall. And every 5 days during the summer. I live in Utah, and my lawn is 90% Kentucky Blue. All Hondas start with ease. My 8 year old could start my old HRM with one pull, and can do the same with this HRC. Hope I made the right decision. I was looking at the Exmark with the Kai engine. Wish I could get both, but I am just a homeowner who LOVES nice equipment.
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess5 жыл бұрын
Nice. Rest assured, I don’t think you made a bad decision. That mower on your personal property will last a lifetime. You have to remember that I mow more grass with these mowers in a month than the average home owner does in their lifetime. Congratulations on your new mower. Thanks for watching.

It’s actually been three seasons now that I stopped using the Hondas. I switched to a Exmark commercial 21 the first year and I liked it a lot. Then the last two seasons I have been using the Exmark commercial 30 and it’s been a game changer for me. I don’t see myself ever going back to 21” mower. The 30 fits in all the same places but saves me on average 2 hours per day over using a 21. I’ve done lots of videos about the 30 including my latest video which was a long term review of the Exmark commercial 30 after using it as the main mower in my lawn care business the past two seasons. I've had similar issues on my 2010 HRS 216, the low end model. It's a good mower, but a bit underwhelming. It leaves lines of uncut grass unless you mow counterclockwise. After ten years, it's an ongoing battle with rust and the deck. (Who wants to spend a few hours every season repainting the deck?) It comes in mulching mode by default, but does not include the high lift mulching blade. That really hurts mulching performance. I may get 20 years out of it, so maybe I shouldn't complain. :-) My favorite mower was a 1990's Lawn Boy. It left lawns with the most beautiful cut. The two stroke engine never bogged down. (Reliability was bad, and the Honda is a lot better in that regard.) I still keep my eyes open for a similar model on classifieds.

If there is one thing I’ve learned from the last 15 years in my business and doing equipment reviews these last few years, it’s that their is no perfect product. Everything has one issue or another. Some are minor issues and some are more serious, but all could use some improvement in some aspect. Also I have heard similar from people in regards to those old lawn boy mowers being their favorite. Thanks for watching.

I have 3 of the HRC 216 & you're right the K3 generation has had more issues than the K2 generation like your older one. I've been in this business 20 years & I've owned 2 of the K2 generation & now on my 4th K3 generation. I solved the fuel cap issue by putting a ziploc bag over it with a rubber band when its raining. Honda won't listen. The transmission do slow down over time & by the 4th season its noticeably slower. Happened to my last 2 mowers bought in 2013 & 2015. And now most parts are coming from China & they aren't the same quality. That entire engine is now built in China. I've found workarounds & upgrades to improve the parts to keep the machines running but Honda should listen. I'm actually thinking of trying the Exmark or Toro for my next mower
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess5 жыл бұрын

@@LawnCareBusinessSuccess I watched your exmark 21" video. Really thinking of getting one . We have a dealer here in Astoria, OR that just picked up the Exmark line. I just bought a new Honda HRC216 a few months ago & just like my other 2, its already giving me problems. Leaked oil out the dipstick tube, rear wheels are practically bald, front height adjusters are loose, fuel cap doesn't vent in rain, etc. I'm on the Oregon coast where working in rain is a necessity. Many guys here use the HRX series but those aren't true commercial mowers. They wear out cables & transmissions. Not to mention the fuel tank is so small I'd be filling up 6 or 7 times a day. So I'm to the point that this may be my last HRC mower if I can find something better
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess5 жыл бұрын
The exmark has been good so far but it took a long time to get use to the handle after using the Honda. The Honda engine also feels like it has a bit more torque possibly over the Kawasaki on the exmark, but I’m in Vancouver BC, so like you I have to mow in the rain most days. So although the extra torque of the Honda would be nice, I much rather it just stay running in the rain. The exmark has no issues running in the rain and fuel tank is a huge one gallon. The aluminum deck is also nice for the wet conditions.
@timmancill25305 жыл бұрын
@@LawnCareBusinessSuccess thanks for the info ! The Honda is plenty powerful for my yards. I never allow my yards to go longer than 2 weeks of growth. I don't tolerate customers that let it get too tall or ask to skip mows simply because it gets so tall it takes longer & is hard on equipment. I'll try to demo an Exmark sometime. Will be hard to change after using Hondas for 20 years

The deck probably would’ve lasted longer if you cleaned it out and it wouldn’t rusted as fast that’s why you had to weld it probably because you left the grass clumps inside the deck
@LawnCareBusinessSuccess4 жыл бұрын
Ur average Savage rusted fast? It lasted 10 years. I cleaned it out after very house in the rain, sometimes even twice per house so it wouldn’t drop clumps of grass on the concrete and leave stains. When you mow in the rain 80% of the time and it’s being used everyday in those conditions, it’s going to rust regardless of what you do over that span of time.

The engine and transmission are the the things I would not worry about on the Honda. That old mower in the video the engine and transmission still work. The self propel part that wear out with them is the little ratchet mechanism in the wheels. Super easy and cheap fix. Most people think that the transmission goes out when it’s really just the ratchet in the wheel. Probably easier fix then changing the belt on other systems. Thanks for watching.
