THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! The belt slipped off today, and no matter what I did, there was no way to get the belt back on without tearing the unit apart. Your videos, part 1 and part 2, were what I needed to see to get the job done, and save myself at least $100 at the repair shop. There were improvements that could be made to video, I guess, but you gave us enough information to easily get the job done. Thanks again!!

As a practice I don't post online but your videos warrant a change to that policy. I spent yesterday replacing a belt on my honda mower and could never have done it without these excellent videos. Both the narration and the filming (no shake/good angles) were excellent. I bought a used mower for a vacation house and have no idea of the age but the rust/crud underneath certainly meant it had seen a lot of use. It took longer to free some bolts than your videos run but in the end, my mower is back in business. Thanks so much for sharing and helping all of us who like to do our own basic repairs.

I have an older Honda like this that I've replaced belt on once (it is like 25 years old), wore out the belt again so I retired it to branch chopping duty because it is slow but the engine won't die! So I bought a new HRX217HYA which is now 16 years "new". It is actually a model HRX217K4 HYAA which includes the blade clutch. It claimed to have a "hydrostatic transmission" which I thought meant it had a drive shaft not a belt to the transmission. Yesterday it stopped moving forward after the blade hit rock. So I thought the transmission died. Took it apart found it has a belt but different transmission to yours and my older Honda. So going to put a new belt on and hopefully it was just the belt coming off the transmission side pulley and not actually the transmission gearing. Thanks again.

Had to change a "CABLE, ROTO-STOP" and your video was a big help getting things apart. Thanks so much.

You sir, are a blessing! Your video was a great tutorial on how to help me get this done.

Thanks, there seem to be many variations of the same mower, with small differences. A curse on Honda for that. Mine has a keeper on the belt at the transmission, a little more difficult.

I bent the crankshaft on my lawn mower and had to remove the engine. The belt R&R was a lot easier since most of the parts were already removed.

Great vid, both parts I and II. Thanks for the info. BUT, you forgot to show us how to re-install the 12 mm "hidden" bolt, AND the 10 mm bolt by the left rear tire. Would have been nice to see that.

Did the mower have a guard around the pulley to keep the belt from coming off? My HHR does and the replacememt motor I found doesnt have holes in the block to mount the gaurd.

Not that I'm aware of.

Should there be some slack in the belt once you put the new one on or should it be tight?
@veteranssmallenginerepair59344 жыл бұрын
The belt will be tight.

After you remove the two longer Bolts that go into the engine you skip over how to release the bolt that holds the sliding panel. the one the switches from bag to mulch. I cannot detatch that. Please inform me.

There is a 10mm nut inside the grass chute. Move the lever to mulch and you will find it.

What if it has the blade clutch?

How would you know your belt needs replacing? My HRX is very slow, although the engine sounds normal.
@veteranssmallenginerepair59345 жыл бұрын
I check the belt at the beginning, middle and end of my local mowing season. I look for cracks, wear and fraying. If the belt breaks that will prevent movement. A slow moving mower can be a sign of a worn / stretched belt or a need to adjust the control cable.

@@veteranssmallenginerepair5934 Thank you so much! I made a few turns on the Shift Lever adjustment nut and the thing cruises once again! I wasted so much time cutting slow this summer.

Mine started to slow down very significantly and then finally just stopped moving. If yours is going noticeably slower, I would order a belt now.
