UPDATE. 11 MONTHS LATER I HAD TO DO IT AGAIN. Mower would not pull itself on level concrete. When it was new it would pull up a 35 degree hill. Cable was adjusted all the way out for more pull, did not help. Changing out the engagement cable and the belt. Of note, the hidden bolt was a 13 mm, not a 12 mm and there is a retaining shield on the back pulley at the transmission, thanks Honda. FIRST REVIEW: Good to know, I changed one before without knowing any of this, probably did more work than necessary, but got it on. I like the wind chimes, nice calming effect. You did this in an 11 minute video, took me over am hour.

Just needed to replace my drive belt after it falling off today. I watched your part 1 video, went out and replaced it! Thanks so much for a very informative video!!!
@johnvincent49285 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I found it very informative to determine which bolts needed to be removed to access the belt. I have a few comments from what I learned while changing the belt. 1. I bought a belt for the HX217 without realizing there is more than one option. Make sure you buy the belt that matches the engine. I purchased the belt on Amazon. 2. I did not remove the blade adapter to take off / put on the belt. (time saver) 3. I did not take off the wheel to access the bolt. Just adjust the wheel location. (time saver).
@veteranssmallenginerepair59345 жыл бұрын
These are all very good comments. You are correct that the blade adapter and wheel do not need to be removed. I did so for filming purposes and for those who might be doing this for the first time. Thanks for watching and commenting!

If you're doing all this you should at least sharpen or better, replace the blades. Before putting it all back together clean the drive gear and the wheel bearings. There was a lot of gunk on the drive gear.

Didn’t read thru all the comments, but for all those attempting this cuz your belt is loose, there is an adjustment on the cable to tighten it up. Worked great for me and very easy.

Thanks for the video. It gave me the confidence to go ahead and change the drive belt on my HRX217HXA. Mine has a Blade Brake Mechanism, so it is a bit different - I managed to change the belt without disturbing the blade brake mechanism. The most tricky part was the way part of the case was attached; it had a metal insert that went part way through one part to the case to mate with the other. The bolt setup was the same for the three metal pieces below.

Good stuff. Thanks for the video; quite helpful. Just a note that could be a significant time saver for those who have only had the belt (somehow) come off of the pulleys, but otherwise in good shape; that's what happened with mine. In that situation, all I did is use a large set of adjustable pliers (or some other suitable grabbing utensil) to grip around the transmission housing, and rotate it forward. That allowed me to simply slip the loose end of the belt around the pulley at the engine. By going this route I avoided the more time consuming process of taking apart all the undercarriage pieces. I will say, removing the blade (only) was helpful to be able to provide easier access. Also, having a second person is helpful to actually manipulate the belt (keeping a tight enough grip on the transmission housing with the pliers can take both hands). Bonus, while the blade is off, it's a good time to give it a good sharpening. If the belt is broken and has to be replaced, the disassembly you showed in the video would be necessary.

Great video! On mine, it looks like the pulley is rubbing against that metal bracket it sits next to. Does it need adjusted somehow? I'm wondering if that is what caused my belt to slip off. Thanks!

So how’d you take the lower cover off? Video doesn’t mention how to remove the bolt holding cover to metal bracket..
@bosox2k13 жыл бұрын
My belt can’t be removed the way you instruct. There’s no spring to pull forward. I can rotate the housing but the belt appears to have some sort of casing at each end (removed center) and I can’t get the belt up in the housing removed. Space is too narrow for the belt. Is mine slightly updated? Any advice?

For those who had a rusty pin on the mulch selector rod and can’t get it to budge, you can cut a slit with your knife in the plastic on one end and slip the cover over it.

Uh, am I wrong, or at about the 7:40 min mark, you forgot to show us how to remove the 10 mm bolt on the cover? In part II of the video, you re-install it by going through the discharge chute and holding the nut in place while you tighten the bolt back up. Also, how do you keep the discharge chute open enough to do that? Would have been nice to see this........
@veteranssmallenginerepair59343 жыл бұрын
You are correct. That footage was lost. I hold the chute with a spring clamp or licking pliers. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I did great until I came to the pin that you easily took out because it was loose. Using needle nose pliers. Mine is frozen in there and cannot even knock it out. Perhaps melting two slots into casing so it will slide over this pin?
