Thanks for the comment, ah i gave it a go and suppose its still on the road but probably far too much time went into it. Im keen to try out lanoguard, i have an MX5 which although not rusty just for preservation it would be nice to protect it.

Great work. Looks like it lived in Glasgow! I bought a 2006 Honda Jazz sport with the 1.4 Dsi engine. Apart from a piece of tray behind the front grill it's pretty solid thankfully. I had a look when it was on a lift. The mechanic said that piece isn't structural so not to worry but I had the car undersealed. Just wondering about replacing that bit a five inch on one end literally crumbled away.

Thanks for the comment. It was interesting to do it, the jazz is a nice car solid with a lovely slick gear-change and driving experience. Although if another relative wanted a car i definitely would not be going to the effort of this for it, unfortunately they all seem to be fairly scabby underneath. I bought and sold a 2009 Citroen C3 1.4 around the time i was doing the work to this jazz and to be honest i regret not just buying it for my mum. The jazz required the rust protection and a replacement gearbox. The C3 was mint underneath and just required a service and timing belt kit.

Again a very good and practical video on the subject that isn’t the most glamorous but is in the long run quite important. I lost my old six Jen Honda Civic to rust when it was 21-year-old but if I had taken the steps you had taken here, I would still have it on the road today.. in fact we have now got a similar jazz as a replacement and I need to look at that because it is 10 years old and there are some rust areas....
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 5 жыл бұрын
21 years old is a good run, although at 10 your jazz its probably best to look underneath it now. It depends on where you are located but the company i recommended rust.co.uk you can bring your car to them to have this rust protection service done. Although i am not sure how far it goes if things like removing the axle and subframe are done, it seemed the only way to properly get as much coverage.

Yes I will have a good look at that companies website to get some products. I have a small shot blaster for a spot of rust as well as the cordless angle grinder with various abrasive wheels

Thanks for the comment, i have a more comprehensive video in the pipeline, similar sort of preservation albeit on a peugeot 407. The honda still seems solid underneath i will need to do a follow up video 2 years after it got the protection.

Dude... i like you. #NoHomo I just did a similar process on my 2006 Yaris. Although i didn't go quite as far as you. I dropped the rear axle out, degreased it and then spent 2 weeks sandblasting, grinding and needle scaling most of the underneath of the car. I didn't have time to do the wheel arches or the sills or front subframe. I will have to do those in the summer. I might add a layer of gravitex to the wheel arches to protect from stone chips. I didn't bother with rust converter. I used a marine product called Jotun 87 which is an epoxy mastic to paint over the metal. Apparently it sticks best to blasted steel. I was worried that the rust converter might reduce the adhesion. I wish i had done it in the summer and i wish i had done it oudoors. It took 2 weeks of work to clean the dust out of my dads garage afterwards from sand blasting. Spending 10 hours a day on your back sandblasting with a 50L compressor in winter is pretty miserable. I'm fairly pleased with the results so far. I rebuilt the rear suspension, the drum brakes and replaced the old rusty brake lines and flexible lines. I'm hoping it lasts 5-7 years - ideally another 150,000 miles before the rust kills the car.

Hi, its interesting to read this to see what others have done. Where are you based yourself? The blasting, yes its very messy when its done out of a cabinet, the dust gets everywhere in a shed.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Makes me a little more comfortable to see other people who have done something similar although your work was a bit more thorough than mine. I really hope my work lasts. I'm vert attached to my car even though its a shitbox, its got me all over Europe and its cheap to run and ridiculously reliable. I'm based in Shropshire mate.

That was an epic job well done! Subscription added on the strength of it. Have you now done the same to that gorgeous-looking XJR? One of those completely rust-proofed would be a dream car.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, it definitely helped keep this jazz on the road. The blue one was scrapped last October. I have not actually got near the XJR just yet because of an odd problem, my lift arms cant quite reach its proper jacking points. That and other life things got in the way. I have plans to build a new shed soon and when the lift goes in ill make sure it can lift the jag. Although its not a car that ever sees winter roads and is garaged which seems to help with keeping the X308's notorious rust issues at bay.

Nice job. My mums 2009 car is exactly the same. Honda quality is the best right? My wife's 5 series has more miles and not a spec of rust. I only have enough time to get to the worst of it, hopefully it will make it last a couple more years. Will be using Vactan and Epoxy undercoat.

I would have doubts over the quality of hondas, this one required all this rust removal work and a replacement gearbox. On the plus side it is very pleasant to drive, the gearchange especially is very slick. I normally would stick to french cars old peugeots or citroens and find the mechanicals to be very tough, they resist rist very well. The old Xsara that came before this jazz was starting to show bits of rust underneath but it was a 2001 car that lived near the coast.

I agree my old 205 had no rust at all. Very well made bodies. As for Hondas I wouldn't have another.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
I hope so haha, not too sure why its so rusty its a Northern Ireland car as is the blue one shown both equally rusty underneath. Ive noticed under most Jazzes i see at the auctions they are rusty underneath, just something i notice about the underside of japanese cars, must be down to the coating they put under the cars.

@peugeotCitroen2CV

Haha, im partial to a bit of jazz and why not with a honda jazz. The Jag is an XJR 4.0 Supercharged, its a 2001 so i think it has the uprated chain tensioners although an effort will be made to visually inspect them.

@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
Hardest part is getting rid of the old rust, lots of wire brushes and standing under the car with angle grinders or die grinders running wire brushes to get it back to bare metal. There will be a follow up video soon showing how the car looks underneath, i might actually get my aunts jazz of the same age on the lift which has not been treated for comparison.

How many hours labour and what did it cost? I’m looking for a ballpark figure to work on as I don’t want to be ripped off when I speak to a body shop manager/owner for a quote. My Honda Jazz has similar work needing done.

Unfortunatley i lost track of time with this, i did it in the evenings/weekends after the day job and from the car going into the shed and it coming back out took me 3 months. Ordering parts, waiting on paints to dry took time. I suppose if i took a few days off work and spent it exclusively on the Jazz it would have been done faster but i found it very time consuming. Its something i now put down to a labour of love, do it to a car you really want to keep, no amount of money would pay me to do this job for someone else. Krown i believe offer a rust protection service, hubnut took a few of his cars to them. Approximately £3-400 they charge. I just dont know if they treat existing rust. If you had sprayed this honda with wax without first dealing with the rust the wax would have trapped in moisture and rusted it even quicker.

do all honda jazz from all years have rust problems or did they fixed the issue ?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 3 жыл бұрын
Generally any I've seen in the auctions or for sale are scabby underneath, a general problem that affects most hondas as they age. Perhaps there are ones out there that have been treated from new that may not have much rust, or if they have been garaged and not used in the winter.

This level of rust prevention, and it needed a gearbox... I buy and sell the odd car and remember having a 2012 Citroen C3 1.4 in a few months after finishing the jazz which cost a fraction of the price and was flawless, left me wondering why i bothered with the jazz. While it lacks the solid feel and 'percieved reliability' of the honda if anyone asks id say just buy the C3.

@peugeotCitroen2CV

I bought this hearing about the 'legendary' honda reliability, i was rushed one MOT having to put a back axle into her Xsara and thought a Jazz would need less attention. Having said that my mums old 2001 2.0 HDi Xsara is actually still on the road and it had over 150k original engine and gearbox, apart from the axle it never really needed much. The Jazz i found fun to drive but then at times i find the ride a bit too harsh and its not a great car on the motorway. In terms of reliability it needed a gearbox thats why it was cheap, then the usual old car consumbales shocks, brakes, the odd calliper. Not dreadfully unreliable but just normal. Having said that for my mum she only used it to nip into the local town and back home so for that purpose it was perfect.

I think its whatever type of underside sealant honda used, ive inspected quite a few jazzes at the auctions and they all seem scabby underneath. Not exactly sure what makes the french cars resist rust for so long, the old citroen xsara is very solid underneath for a 2001 car.

That is interesting, wonder what steps they take, and products they use. They would recommend with the wax to top it up every year, although the epoxy mastic is supposed to be a more permanent coating that is why this got it and the wax. I shall make an effort to do a follow up after a year of driving.
