Honda Lawn Mower - Starts, Runs, Cuts out, Stops - Spark-plug Fix tutorial

This is a short tutorial video showing a suggested fix for a lawnmower that starts and runs for a few seconds then cuts out. Before cleaning the carburettor try changing the spark plug.

I’ve been buying and selling lawn mowers. I’ve done about 200 plus of them. Ran into this issue today. I eliminated spark as it would start right up. But would die after a few minutes. Had the same problem with my Honda powered McCulloch. Did what most people do and stripped the carb. No benefit. Never thought that the plug would cause this sort of problem. New plug and it's fixed. Thanks.

This same problem happened with my mower. It would run for about 2 minutes and then cut out. Carb is clean, good gas, oil okay, air filter okay. I swapped the spark plug with one from a different push mower. Ran okay for 25 minutes to cut the grass. I installed the original spark plug back in the engine. It started and ran for about 1 minute. This is exactly what happened with the Honda engine on my Karcher Pressure Washer. I changed the spark plug, and it runs like a champ now !! Much easier than cleaning the fuel line and carb as others suggested.

Great to share this info. Actually just got mine halfway running with a new plug, carb is getting eat up inside, gonna get a new one. Been running ngk for yrs in it, no problems. When I was a Nissan dealer tech, we had many Nissans that just wouldn't run good at all on Champion plugs, put in NGK or Bosch, and ran great. Always one of the first things to check.

Thank you! I cleaned the carburetor 3 times, drained the fuel, cleaned the plug (it looked good to me) and was thinking about checking valves, coil, flywheel key, etc. I finally asked KZbin. I can't believe it but changing the spark plug fixed it. $5.00. Done.

Thanks for posting! My Honda started random stalling. I was thinking maybe junk in the carb or a fuel filter, but the way it would die suddenly made me unsure. Usually fuel supply causes a fade in power before dying. I'm glad that the first tool I picked up was Google because this is exactly what the problem was. A quick trip to the hardware store and five bucks later it's running great again.

My Honda mower quit on me. Same symptoms as you describe. Did a search and went through at least two dozen web sites and videos, (some very boring, others just not helpful). Everything pointed to the carb, maybe the magneto. Spent hours on the recommended "fixes" and none of them worked. Then a second piece of Honda powered equipment I had failed, just like the first. Just when I was about to give up and make a trip to the repair shop, I found your video. Picked up two spark plugs and both are working perfectly now. No NGK this time. I went with an Autolite equivalent. Only wish I had seen your video first, but I can take a carb off in about two minutes now. Thanks!

Yes, everyone pulls the carburetor expecting to see a filthy bowl and blocked jets but there isn't anything. They put it back together everything looks fine but while I'm here I may as well change the spark plug. They go on to think that its still the carburetor when all the time it was just the little $3 sparky.

Same issue here, hadn't ran mine in a while, so I cleaned the carb first. Had the same issue, would run about 20-30 seconds, then stop. Went and got a new spark plug, and wouldn't you know, the thing runs perfectly. Guy at the local hardware said the NGK plug runs hot, and will only last a few years. Gave me a cooler Champion plug. Anyhow, thanks for the KZbin video. Us do-it-yourselfers have to stick together.

My HRR216 would start fine, but after five minutes or so, would lose power, stumble and stall. Thought it was fuel, drain through the valve on the bottom of the float bowl, and re fuelled. No change. Removed the carb, disassembled and cleaned, reassembled. No change. Googled it and found a video like this one. Spark plug was the fix. Thanks for posting you video.

Mines doing this and now I'm about to change my spark plug out .. almost cleaned my carb again but i just did that yesterday then it still wouldnt start well found out that the choke door pole had to be facing to the front of mower with the mettle tab on the other side facing to the back of mower , I also lubed up all the auto choke gears and maid sure my cable pulled back far enough to hit the switch and brake release and needed up putting a little bend in the wire so it hit into the switch better and now it runs good for a few minutes then stalls out and now I just watched this video and will be doing this as well hope it works..

Well after stripping the carburetor down and cleaning main and idle jets + flushing out the fuel tank and running new fuel I still had the same problem. I saw this on KZbin and bought a new spark plug and sure enough it cured the problem. I really appreciate the simple tutorial which helps everyone who thought by the symptoms it was a fuel issue. Thanks so much for posting this video. Mine done the exact same thing. Would run for 15 seconds and then stop, took about a minute to start and run for 15 seconds. Had not changed my spark plug since I got the honda lawn mower about 10 years ago. Today the lawn mower would start and run for about 20 seconds and it died out over and over. FYI I have never changed or added oil all these years either. I replaced the spark plug and it fixed the problem. I got a new air filter for good measure. Mower rounds lots smoother now. I plan on changing the oil next week to make sure it is updated. Thanks for the video!

Thanks so much for posting this. I had removed and cleaned the auto choke and then the carburettor and changed the fuel which didn't fix it. I was just thinking about replacing the pipe work and then the ignition coil. In 40 years of messing around with engines I have never experienced a spark plug failure only when the engine was hot but certainly that's what it was. New plug and it runs lovely. Many thanks.

My 1 year old Honda mower running "rough" would start, rev high, sputter then die tried starter fluid, would start and rev then die had fuel stabilizer in gas but it still looked off pulled plug and cleaned fouling, sprayed small engine carb and choke cleaner still no luck decided to quit messing around with it pulled the plug and cleaned it really well drained the carb drained the fuel tank, gas cloudy and gunky over the winter threw away old gas can (had a crack in it so my guess is water in there too) pulled carb bowl, full of gunk and crud cleaned it, ran some gas through the fuel line and bowl sprayed some sea foam in plug/head put 1 oz of sea foam in new gallon of gas with brand new gas can filled tank with new gas treated with seafoam pulled it 1 time, boom! runs perfect, only took 20 minutes should have done this at the beginning will take advice of these posts and go get new plug too

After cleaning carburetor back to back 3 times, changing fuel lines, draining fuel tank, changing oil, disconnecting "off" wire and adjusting valve lash, isolated issue to ignition by spraying starting fluid into intake when begins to die. Before changing coil found this video.

I bought a honda mower from our local dump, it started then cut out like this, didnt have time to sort it out so left it in my shed, came across this video by accident,thought i would try it!, Took a plug out of another honda engine i have ,put it in gave it a pull and it started , thought it might cut out again , but no kept going , the mower itself is in very good condition so it appears somebody threw it away all for the sake of a new spark plug. Can this happen with a brand-new mower? I just put oil & gas in yesterday, started it, ran for 30' & it started sputtering & died. I tried it several times & it started again & did the exact same thing. I had the height set at 3.5", the grass wasn't thick, I hadn't mowed enough for it to be clogged. I'm at a loss.

My old Honda trimmer started doing this. Sadly, it started to happen within an hour's time of rebuilding the carb, which had torn membranes (WYL-type). I replaced the fuel pickup/fliter, the lines, the entire carb., and the fuel cap. No joy. I replaced the NGK plug, though it looked fine and sparked fine while outside the head, and now it runs perfectly. Sometimes it's the easiest, cheapest thing on the motor and not the carb you just fiddled with...

Okay to make it official here on your KZbin channel I just fixed a Troybilt TB230 with a Briggs & Stratton Series 725 190cc vertical shaft engine with the starts and stops issue by changing out the spark plug. I've not seen this fix for anything but a Honda but this fix might have something to do with this problem with other mower brands. Everyone tries to blame the carburetor which actually sounds like the most logical thing to blame but here is another solution to an old reoccurring problem amongst all mowers.

I'm having this problem with my Briggs and Stratton as well, spark plug looked black, sanded it down to remove carbon, and still didn't run right. Am about to change out carb. But maybe I'll just buy a new spark plug before I pull everything apart.

Another fix is checking the spark arrester in your muffler. You'll have to remove it and mount it on a vise and torch it. Or just buy another spark arrester and replace it. But neah torch it with your propane torch get it nice and red and use a wire brush to remove burnt carbon. I don't have to mention to be careful its hot right? Oh yes, also change the spark plug as a regular routine every 2 years.

I really appreciate the video. Unfortunately, I purchased and entire caburetor kit which included: carburetor, filter, gas line, inline filter and gaskets....and the spark plug... thank goodness. I installed everything BUT the spark plug and couldn't understand why the mower would crank and then turn off? It’s not the same lawn mower as yours and uses a different spark plug Bpr5 not a 6. But I tried an old champion plug with same depth reach but different size socket head 5/8 vs 13/16. Hi, this is a pretty standard 'spark plug removal tool'. They don't cost very much. Mine is quite old. You can find them on auction websites. Just search for 'spark plug removal tool'. I bought mine from a car boot sale for about 50p. They come in a few standard sizes. It is worth getting all the sizes as you never know what spark plug you might be working with.

My HRU216 exhibited the same faults. Because the mower started and then failed after 5 to 35 seconds , then I thought that the fault must , in some way, be related to a fuel or carburettor issue. Then, I saw this commentary and video. So, I replaced the plug ( after first trialing a plug cleaning process ) and the mower responded immediately. Thanks for the tip

Ok, so my Honda HRX217 keeps shutting off after 15 minutes of run time. It has a new carb, external fuel filter, and gas cap. I replaced the spark plug about a month ago. Seems like vapor lock, but with new gas cap, I ruled that out. Any suggestions, anyone??

Usually with these kind of symptoms, I clean the carb and the fuel lines. Also use new fuel. Sometimes the carb gives up and the best solution might be to buy a new carb. Did you clean the fuel system completely ?

I had the same problem with an identical mower, bought it cheap at junk shop, for years I have started it with " quick start" but today even this failed except for short run. I removed the very sooty NGK 6 plug and replace it with new - same heat range i.e. 6. Off it went like a long dog So! either I must use a plug which runs hotter (ie 5 or 4), or sort out fuel air mixture, maybe the air filter is dirty - but looks clean.

Changing for a new plug only worked for one run ! Now I'll have to look at the replacement plug which is the same NGK BP6ES. Or maybe it is something to do with that automatic choke which on mine seems to have had the actuating lever and wax cylinder removed. Maybe I'll make a plan to locate the airfilther away from the carb so that I can see whats going on !

Usually it is a fuel starvation problem. You might light to try cleaning the carburettor. Thats what many people try to do first as it is indicative of a fuel starvation problem.

I believe the problem is due to porcelain being cracked. When the plug heats up, it expands and an arc is formed which causes the plug to fail. I am not sure about this but there may be some truth in it

Interested to find out what else to try. Myself also, cleaned the carburetor for the second time. I tried swapping the plug from another machine some time back, no resolution. Mine srarts first pull runs beautiful for a minute or two. Then tends to backfire through the carburetor even to the point that it shoots the air filter away. Will die out. Pulled right away starts hesistant and runs for 10 - 15 seconds to die out again and over and over. Warming up trips it.

Some people want to save time and money though, that spark plug you removed could have been cleaned and the gap checked it looked quite new.

The spark plug porcelain is damaged - so the spark plug fails to work when it heats up and the crack expands. The plug must be replaced. Thanks for taking the time to comment

Interesting. Might be a carburettor problem. Have you cleaned the jets ? You can also try squirting some petrol in the chamber (remove spark plug and inject petrol directly, reinstall spark plug) This might just get it going again

I've tried to solve this to no avail. It ran perfect last fall, I started it this spring and ran for 10- 15 minutes then started missing until it died - it starts missing before it dies ( exactly as this video). Once it dies, there is no spark ( verified) again until it cools. Once cool, It starts and runs perfectly for about 3 or 4 minutes, then it dies again in the same manner. I have tried 3 new plugs, a champion, NGK and a knockoff brand, replaced the coil and plug wire, removed the handle kill switch and ensured the oil level is correct and I cant seem to get past this issue. Since there is no spark, its not even possible ( but I will list ) all the fuel related items ruled out - removed the gas cap ( avoid vapor lock), changed and removed the air filter( no air obstructions ) replaced the carburetor (with a genuine Honda) replaced the fuel day 1. It seems to be getting worse in that it now dies after just 2 or 3 minutes when cols, initially it was about 10 minutes. There is no smoke from the engine and it has good compression. What have I missed here?

It is easy to miss small gunk deposits in the carb. Sometimes you need to soak the shit out of the carb. 2 days in carb cleaner and then use a thin wire in those pesky little holes. Good luck

I wish I knew why this only happens to Hondas. I've never seen this with a Briggs, even in motors with 10+ year old spark plugs. I did see the ceramic insulator around the center electrode of a couple Kohler plugs come loose and slide around. Now I shake all old plugs. Those two plugs were very old, and in the same two cylinder Kohler motor.

Thanjks for your comment - It could be the carb. If you can find an old one that is working, you can try swapping it out. Jets might need cleaning, the float might not be dropping properly. Good luck - hope you find the problem
