have had a problem with my honda mower for years. I took it to a mower repair man and he made it worse. eventually after a winter lay up it would not start so I decided to take a look myself with the help of this video and am so grateful for the help. the maim problem was that the guy who looked at it before when reassembling dropped one of the gaskets an one side.all good now thanks. I think it a bit radical but I cut away the top part of the plastic cover behind the air filter to more easily get to the idler screw and to assemble. just cover again with some gorilla tape.

For the record this is May, 2017 and I found this video. Thank you, Thank you. I am mechanically minded but never tried to do anything with a carberator, even on my lawn mower. I have an Ex-cell Power Washer with a Honda GCV 160 engine that is about 15 years old. I just could not get it started. I replaced the shut off valve, the in line filter and still could not get it started. After looking at this video, I figured I would give it a shot. I do not have the cleaning machine you had in the video but with Purple Power Spray and hot water I was able to clean the entire carberator, reinstall it and now the power washer runs perfectly. Thank you.

Very good job on the video, you seemed to cover all the steps very well. I've done a few of these, and I learned a couple of hints and tricks from you. Just a suggestion: When I reassemble a carb onto the engine, I install temporary studs into the bolt threads of the engine (just finger tight), then reassemble in the proper sequence onto the temp studs. Then apply slight pressure towards engine, remove 1 stud and install a bolt, then remove the other stud and install that bolt. I think it makes the necessary reassembly steps easier than trying to hold it all together (especially when reconnecting the crankcase breather tub), getting things aligned, and install the bolts. Made the temporary studs by cutting the heads off some old carb bolts.

Great video! When reinstalling the gaskets, carburetor and filter housing, all the components want to fall apart, so before you start the job, get two identical long bolts and cut the bolt heads off, then screw those headless bolts partway in, then thread all the gaskets, carb and filter housing on. With one hand holding pressure on the face of the filter housing, one at a time, remove and replace one headless bolt with the original bolt. Everything stays aligned and the job is done.

Good tip, Terrence. I have a Chonda on the bench right now, and these guys, whoever they are, use studs. Hard to believe anything these guys do would be an improvement on a Honda, but as you know, wherever you go, there you are.

If you don't want to use that trick all you really have to do is thread those bolts in from the back side, then hold on to one of the bolts pull the other one out and send it through the front way. Then hold that bolt and send the other bolt through the front way. Very very easy trick

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to share. Great info regarding the coating on the carb and not to use a caustic cleaner. Off to soak mine in Purple Power. FYI: Simple Green, great stuff, does have one issue... it eats certain metals. Magnesium being one. If you want to soak metal in Simple Green for any period of time, get the Heavy Duty or aircraft version. They are the same... and they meet the Boeing standard for clean and won't harm metals. I had a magnesium bell housing get eaten by soaking it overnight... wasn't totaled, but it was chewed where it was soaking (wasn't meant to be soaking, just part was in the SG).

Nice video! A tip on reinstalling the carb: use skinny wooden dowels, chopsticks, etc, to line up each item like making kabobs. Then using the long dowels into the carb mount holes in the engine block. Then you can remove one dowel, run that bolt in, then do the other bolt. Keeps you from fighting all those individual components/gaskets/heat shield, airbox from slipping out of alignment.

To cure surging on my Honda Izy I removed the carb and unscrewed the main jet. I thought, wrongly, that the tube underneath had to be unscrewed in the same way, so I was unable to get it out. Thanks to this video I now see the carb should be banged on the cloth and the tube shaken out. I'll give that a try as I'm pretty sure the blockage is in the holes in that very tube somewhere. I have previously tried Sea Foam which provided a slight improvement but after a few minutes the surging returned. As for those confounded bolts that hold the carb and air filter to the engine body; I agree with you, they are a real pain. How much easier it would have been if studs from the engine block were used instead and you could slide all the items on and off one by one then secure the assembly with a couple of hexagonal nuts. Great video. Most helpful. Many thanks.

I really appreciate taking the time to do the video. With that said you didn't show which way the gaskets went on and in what order which was the reason I watched the video. Of course like many of us we forget the order thinking we will remember and then we get to it and the order is confused. I didn't remember which way the plastic piece when on it if I was putting it on the right way. The one I have is beveled and I couldn't remember if it went inward toward the motor or out , so I watch you and your hand was in the way so I didn't see. Every detail which is a pain I know but from each piece to each and every piece going on would have been helpful. Once again thanks for taking the time to do this, I don't want to sound ungreatful , the devil is in the details as they say

Doesn't tell me this, or the part that it wouldn't start again after she was done, so I'm like ok, water in gas ?? Drain it all , tank , bowl & lines, fill up with new , no start, shoot lil start fluid, fires up & dies, ?? Change plug, air filter & still won't start without a blast of SF. But cuts right off when SF is gone, take carburetor off, clean AGAIN , still no start , spray SF it starts then dies ??????? Please help any body ????

Hello sir, a little hint (or is it tip?) on reinstalling the carb: take two 6mm bolts with aprox 9 to 10 cm length (sorry for not calculating them to inches, allready late here) and screw them into the holes of the block. They need to be without heads ofc. I cut mine from a threaded bolt and carved some trenches into them to drive them with a flat screwdriver. Then put all the stuff - isolator, air shield, gaskets, carb, throttle plate and airbox - onto them. Press all of it against the block, remove one of the bolts and insert the original screw instead and tighten it just enough to hold. Repeat with the second bolt and screw the tighten both screws firmly and that's it. Best regards, Thomas

Jeremy, Nice video, you are a very good tech. I would make one suggestion though. You put the small parts (Jet's and emulsion tube) into the fuel bowl and then into the ultrasonic cleaner. This is a mistake. The fuel bowl is metal and blocks the ultrasonic waves. In other words the ultrasonic waves do not penetrate through the metal bowl, just through the small bolt hole, which has very minimal action. You should get a small small pyrex beaker and fill with the solution then place it in the bath. Or, search Google for Ultrasonic small pars baskets or holders. They have metal mesh screens which allow the ultrasonic waves to pass and reach parts. Best wave action is in the center of the bath, half way up from the transducers...

Have a PW with the 160 engine on it that had the surging issue. Followed this vid & it fixed it. A couple issues I had were that the jet doesn't just fall out with tapping.......had to put a small piece of rod (spudger with a 90 degree hook on one end such as found in the telephony industry) into the hole on the tube that holds the jet & emulsion tube & pry on it slightly while I worked the jet out.......never got the emulsion tube out, just used a length of small wire to thread through it, sprayed carb cleaner through it, then compressed air. When replacing the jet, it felt like it was cross-threading, so I tried several times to be sure it wasn't......it just screws in snugly all the way.

I had somewhat the same problem with a mower of mine but mine would run fine while not mowing but when I started mowing it would surge & sometimes die. I cleaned the carb a couple times & blew out all the ports with compressed air to no avail. I finally found the issue was that the in gas tank fuel filter was partially clogged causing the mower to starve for fuel! On a side note, an electricians screwdriver works well for main jet removal because the blades have straight sides.

Cleaned a Older model Honda carb today that had been soaking in Gasoline bath submerged for three days , the worse I'd ever seen and cleaned . In some online videos on Utube they said in one video to not drill out the main jet , but this one was so bad that I had to use a mini drill bit to drill it out - it worked . When you install the carburetor, there is the choke plate, you pushed that all the way right before sliding everything back and installing the bolts? I think I missed that when I put mine back together. Also I think I installed the throttle arm and spring to the wrong spots. It is tight and hard to see everything. I did get mine back together but when I did, the engine seemed to race for me. I’m used to it being a consistent cycle not like it’s throttling up on a runway.

I worked on old 1950s 60s Porsches for many years and most of the slotted screws, not just the carbs take what is called a parallel ground screwdriver. If you look at it from the edge the driving surfaces are parallel rather than being wedge shaped. I have a bunch, gunsmithing screwdrivers also often have this type of tip. If you know anyone who plays electric guitar old strings work great to clean jets.

Great video and nicely narrated. If you look at the air filter side of the carb (the front), you will see what I believe to be an air bleed hole on the upper left. Any ideas why fuel runs out that hole when mowing on a side hill. If you look closely, a gasket goes on before the filter housing and it too has a hole cut out of it. Then, if you look at the filter housing (backside), you will see a groove machined into the filter housing to allow fuel to run down the base of the filter housing and onto the deck. My question is why? Is this hole supposed to have a plug in it? Andy..

I clean out the carburetor, change the plug the machine ran only on choke prior to carb cleaning. Now it runs fine but misfires several times. Do you think it is valve clearance issue? Would go ahead and remove valve cover to check the clearance? Great video!! Thanks I learned a lot from you!!

Got a 99 TRX450S that when trying to adjust the fuel screw I can close the screw completely and the bike doesn’t even drop an rpm it seems. When would cause the rpms to not change at all?

I have a Honda gcv190 power washer. When I pull the rope to start it the carb overflows and leaks. What would the problem be you think. Thanks
