Bought a replacement transmission on Amazon for about 60 dollars, genuine Honda part. Watched this video a couple of times and then tackled myself, no real problems however do drain the oil before putting over on the left side for any length of time, just had to replace oil and filter, no biggie. Definitely get snap ring pliers, very small tips, makes life a whole lot easier. Thought the video was excellent and really appreciate it. Although your mower is probably slightly different on how the shrouds come off, this video is still very helpful. Really not tough to do, if your fairly handy, should be no problem.

I'm a DIY'er and this is the best video I've watched to perform a repair I had no idea how to perform. If you can't change your transmission using this video, go buy a new lawn mower. One thing, make sure you install the drive gear correctly. If the lawn mower doesn't pull after your done, just turn them around.

I had oil run out through the carburetor and into the air filter box, ruining the filter element. DRAIN THE OIL BEFORE YOU PLACE YOUR MOWER ON ITS SIDE FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME!!! I ended up taking the carburetor off to try to clean as much of the oil out of it and the air filter element box. This added over an hour to the project...not to mention the time spent cleaning up the spilled oil. I haven't tried re-starting the engine yet. I'm hoping the oil settles back down into the crankcase before I try to run it.

How did you make out? I have three that I've picked up over the last couple of years. On the oldest two, I kept using penetrating oil. I was using one of those mini impact guns. I had to go get a larger one, which I really should have bought years ago and not taxed the heck outta the mall on. PS: in a pinch Transmission Fluid and Mineral Spirits 50/50 mix, makes a pretty good penetrating oil. A lot of people, including a few you'll find here, say it's better than the commercial brands. I always keep a qt around, for when the commercial stuff runs out. Gonna give it more chances. I get the commercial stuff by the gallon. Cheapest way by the ounce, but the prices are going up and ip. Best wishes!

Note that some of these procedures don't apply or are not relevant for the Honda mower model# HRX217HYA with the gray NeXite plastic (lifetime) deck. The mounting connections for the belt cover (underneath the deck) are completely different & without being able to remove that, it appears that you'll have to pull the engine assembly off the deck to access the belt from above. I have no idea what else is different in the mounting & connections; I got as far as being unable to find/access the belt cover mounting connections. Couldn't find them anywhere. Perhaps you could demonstrate the procedure for this procedure for Honda mowers with that type of deck, if there's an easier method?

Fixed my lawn mower in a short afternoon. No experience. 2 pieces of advice 1) Snap Ring pliers make this a lot easier, don't be cheap use the right tool, you may think needle nose pliers will do the trick but its not worth it. Plus the guys at ACE will give you a node cause you bought the right tool for the job 2) PAY ATTENTION TO THE ORIENTATION OF THE PINION GEAR, I didn't and felt like an idiot when the wheels turned the opposite ways. I bought new transmission from Amazon for $115, now my lawn mower pulls like new.

Been searching extensively for what oil gose in it and how to put it in. Literally all I'm looking for is how to top off the fluid in that part, it's not even mentioned in the manual, so far not one "pro" in all of the existence of the Internet know either.
@GnolGnaoh9 ай бұрын
There should be a access panel once you take off the bag. Then put the back 2 wheels ti the highest and thửa should rotate the transmission fill cap towards you to fill. There’s also a fill level hole open that and on a level grand and when you follow make sure that level plug is off and watch for it to leak out until it stops. Then button it up

I got stuck after taking it all apart. I have a clutch system between the blade and the belt cover. There is no way to get the belt off without removing that and that makes me nervous. Might be screwed.
@scottpoole43744 жыл бұрын
It's not that bad, have a helper hold the blade clutch lever in the engaged position, remove the center bolt with an impact wrench, remove the clutch assembly. Then release the blade clutch lever and the release bracket lifts right off. Now you can access the belt retainer bolts. Reverse this procedure to reassemble.
