DIY project to fix my 2006 Honda Odyssey's air conditioner by replacing the compressor clutch & coil assembly. I'm not a mechanic, but I like to fix stuff!

Gota say your video was so simple and to the point. I have a 2007 and i tested my relays, and other issues. At almost 200k miles, i think the clutch finally gave out. I am going to try to do just alittle more stuff before I buy a whole new unit. Thanks..

Thank you for such an informative video. I am getting ready to tackle my 2010 Odyssey starting today. Not to be picky but what your system has is called refrigerant (R134A to be exact). Freon is the brand name of the old school refrigerant made by DuPont and is also called R-12.

Great, Great job!! That's what's going on with my 2006 Honda Odyssey. It just started smoking, under the hood and stopped blowing cold air.

Hi Videoswitch, thanks for the great video! I did this job this morning and it took about 4 hours. I tried to get that deep snap ring on for about an hour and then followed your advice and dropped the compressor. It took me about 15 minutes there after to get the clip on. AC is working great. Summer will tell:) I had a thought after I finished. I tested the old unit with the multi meter and it tested ok. I wonder if you could get away with taking out one of those spacer washers. If the magnet still works but the clutch is worn, reducing the space between might help. I noticed that the washers that came with my kit were thinner than the originals.
@videoswitch
@videoswitch 2 жыл бұрын
Nice work Kathryn! Since your old magnet still works, I would think the clutch could have been dirty or rusted, or the power connector to the magnet became loose. You might be able to reduce the spacers, but I'd be concerned about messing with the tolerance. I've seen some other clutch repair videos where people are grinding, sanding, and cleaning the clutch hub to get it re-engaging with the magnet. But the parts are cheap, and it's nice to have it all fresh and new.

Thanks for the video. I will be doing this sometime probably this week/early next week. That said, it looks like your harmonic balancer rubber is cracking. The harmonic balancer is known to separate occasionally. Maybe you can check to make sure your harmonic balancer is not separating. (Hard to tell just from short video shot but I can see some rubber cracking)
@videoswitch
@videoswitch 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for tip on the harmonic balancer, Stranger Land. I had no idea. It does look like there is some minor cracking to the rubber when viewing from the side. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Hopefully it holds up for the life of the vehicle.

I saw that too, figured someone else did. Should replace it, if that goes your engine will likely be trashed because its an interference engine.
@videoswitch
@videoswitch 2 жыл бұрын
@Another Mike -- I'm wondering if a harmonic balance fails if that would actually damage the engine. My understanding has been that the timing belt affects that. The harmonic balance only drives the AC and alternator?
@anothermike6140

@@videoswitch, its connected to the crankshaft, it failing can affect timing

Had the harmonic balancer fail on my van. Doesn't affect timing but you do lose power steering and alternator and air conditioning kind of scary to drive without it. Easier repair than AC clutch

Hi Videoswitch, great video. Best of all the ones I've seen out there and most detailed to date. Thanks for that. Quick question... now that it's been almost a year with this replacement part, how is it holding up? I was on the Ebay listing you provided here in the description, and each review I read on the this same part(whether 5 stars or 1 stars), showed that the product had been refunded. Made me wonder if this particular brand was not holding up for people in the end. Would appreciate any update you have on your install. Thanks.
@videoswitch
@videoswitch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Huey, thanks for your kind feedback! So far the parts are holding up perfectly. I inspected them today in fact, and the clutch is engaging properly and spinning smoothly. However, I replaced it last August, and in the time since, I've only had a month or so of warm enough weather to use A/C. This summer will be the real test. I did find the look and feel of the parts to be quite good when compared to the OEM parts -- almost identical. I did a bit of my own comparison shopping of the available clutch assemblies on Amazon and eBay, and I felt like ECCPP auto was a reputable enough option with a good price. I've seen their name in a couple places before, so I went for it. I hope your repair goes smoothly! Thanks again.

My son in-laws coil and bearing are out on his 2005 Accord 3.0. Waiting on the parts right now. I read some reviews that said they had to use the old snap ring for the coil over because it was tapered on one side. They said the new one was not. I wonder if that had anything to do with you having such a hard time getting it back in besides the 3rd arm? Did you check the air gap or just use the old spacers over again?
@videoswitch
@videoswitch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David -- The old and new snap rings had the same taper on one side, and it's very minimal. It didn't matter what side I tried -- both were difficult. It had more to do with keeping all edges pushed evenly down. I've heard you want the tapered side to go in first, but honestly I don't remember what I ended up doing there, or if it even matters that much. As far as the gap goes, I didn't measure it and just put the old two spacers in. The new ones were slightly thinner, so I didn't want to mess with it. I know there is an acceptable range, so the new spacers probably would have been fine, too.

Thanks for the video! When you took the clutch plate off (the first piece held by the 10mm bolt), did yours slide out freely, or did you have to use something to pull it off? I've got the bolt off, but I can't get it off for the life of me...
@videoswitch
@videoswitch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, yes, the outer clutch plate/hub came off easily for me by hand. You probably have some rust build-up. I'd try some WD-40 around the bolt hole, let it sit for 5 minutes, and tap the hub with a soft mallet. Try to pry it off with something, perhaps a flat-head screwdriver?

@@Lycurgus224 Honda actually designed this quite well. Once you remove the 10mm bolt, you can thread an M8-1.25 x 12 thread per inch bold into the clutch plate where the 10mm was removed, and it pushed it right off. You can find this bolt easily at any hardware store.

@@jtn224 Really? That's it? But if it's a 12mm bolt wouldn't that then be too big for where the 10mm bolt was? Every video I find on KZbin the pressure plate comes off easily so it's super frustrating. If I can't figure it out I'll have to go to a shop and it won't be cheap...
