I cut off the top of a 1 gallon water jug. Then using the top upside down with the cap on, slip it around the filter and take the filter off using the bottles handle to easily hold it. It catches the oil and filter with no mess. Yes in the past it was a nightmare to clean up. Also if oil gets on the lower control arm bushing it will deteriorate the rubber and eventually fail so keep the oil off it by easily changing the oil yourself. Great video!

Yes! This bag over the filter method is exactly what I was looking for. There are so many videos of people using nothing to prevent messes/spillage in that area. I did also find another guy who used and "Oil mat" to redirect the flow of oil coming off the filter removal. Thanks Myks

Great video thanks for the freezer bag trick. I just got a 22 Honda Odyssey my first Odyssey, my first oil change on an Odyssey. Happy to say that Bag did the trick not one drop of oil on anything. Thanks. We should forward this video to all the other guys who put videos up on changing the oil on a Odyssey they need to do it the right way, they got one guy lifting up the back of the car to change the oil. It was good because it showed me where you could lift the car from the back, but yours did make more sense so you can get all the oil out of the pan

I got an oil change a couple weeks ago and have been seeing drips on the garage floor and this video has been educational. I'm sure when they pulled the filter they let oil drip all over because the stain is in the same shape as the piece below. Reassuring to know that it is only a sloppy oil change and not a more urgent issue.

I wouldn't tighten the filter as tight as I can get it by hand as shown in the video. I always use the instructions on the filter that you mentioned just before that. Using a reference mark on the side of the filter, gauge how far you have turned it after gasket contact. You can use a spot on the label of new filter for a reference mark. With clean hands, I could over-tighten a filter past that point. I like the bag trick!

You don’t even need to put oil on that Oil filter gasket, Honda puts Vaseline on this gasket, you don’t need to prefill the oil because it sits on the bottom oil will get in it when you start adding oil to the crank case, these Japanese engineers thought about everything

My biggest gripe for using wheel ramps for oil changes is the fact that you cannot rotate the tires at the same time.
@Myksgarage
@Myksgarage 3 жыл бұрын
You really rotate your tires yourself? My Discount tire store does it for free, and I didn’t even buy the tires there.
@TwoTall1988
@TwoTall1988 3 жыл бұрын
@@Myksgarage it only adds 10-20 minutes to the project and it's even quicker with an impact. Saves me having to wait even longer at a shop to do it and I know my lugs aren't cross threaded and are torqued correctly. Sam's Club is free but it's just quicker and easier to do it on oil changes. With Jack stands you can put the floor jack under one wheel in the back at a time without making up the whole back end or using a lift

@TwoTall1988
@TwoTall1988 Жыл бұрын
@@jsixamore Honda doesn't advertise what tires come on the Odyssey but it appears to be the BRIDGESTONE TURANZA EL440 which are not directional. They would be rotated like normal (front left -> rear left; front right -> rear right; rear left -> front right; rear right -> front left). P.s. the EL440 is also hot garbage so don't buy them as replacements. I like the BFGoodrich Advantage.

You should really invest in an oil filter wrench instead of using those channel lock pliers. I also always take the front passenger wheel off to do oil changes on the van, makes it much easier to access the oil filter. I usually rotate the tires at the same time anyways. I just changed the oil on our van this morning. I'll have to remember the bag trick for next time because the engineers who design these things don't realize they put the oil filter directly over the frame and it makes a mess. I had a Nissan Alitma that was the same way. My F150 is the cleanest oil change in the world as the oil filter is on top of the engine. The messiest oil change ever was our Toyota Highlander we had though that required a special socket to remove the canister housing, although we had an earlier Highlander that had the oil filter on the front of the engine, and when you took it off there was a small channel designed into the engine block that allowed the oil to drip into and down to the ground under the car where it wouldn't drip on anything else.
