I actually got to review the newest Pilot TrailSport and drove it from Texas to south Florida and back. I fell in love with it so now we're just looking for something that'll be a little on the cheaper side and we won't get too bothered if we scratch or dent it if we take it off-roading.

This is SO great! I have a 2006 and was thinking of tricking it out to be more off road ready but my husband didn't think it would be a good idea. He's wrong. Wow, Is he wrong. I have taken my stock Honda Pilot (2004) on all sorts of crazy things out here in Colorado. It really is a great vehicle. Multiple years in a row we took 7 people (two adults, 5 kids, tons of camping gear, huge rooftop storage) up into the mountains. Our favorite location was up about 11/12,000 feet up near Crested Butte, Colorado. Sometimes the terrible roads are super bad...just have to know how to drive. Got lucky with a few big rock scraps, but overall has performed flawlessly. Cant tell you how many dirt trails and 4x4 road.....we come across Jeep groups or Tacoma groups who let us pass going up (as they come down). I haul my KTM dirt bike on the hitch all summer long....sleep in the back probably hundreds of nights (better than tent camping).

I've taken my 2007 civic on all types crazy things in Colorado haha do not recommend for longevity sake, im not surprised the pilot is an underrated off-roader, and is capable of serving most outdoor enthusiast well when equpied with awd. a lot of people are suckered into thinking they need vehicles that are marketed to off-roaders to enjoy the trails and outdoors.

Wow! Outstanding driving and showing what a Honda Piolet can handle. My wife and I were in the market for a new SUV to replace an '05 CRV. We loved the 4 Runner, but even used they are really pricey. We really liked the look of the 09 - 11 Piolet's, and I was able to find one with 35K original miles. Drove to PA to pick it up this past weekend. In doing my research I watched a video where a Piolet was taken off-road and did very poorly. This video proves that with good tires and skill it can be used off-road, and confidently handle many situations.

I had an 07 and my dad has an 08 Ive taken both offroad, both did great. All Pilots need is some more ground clearance. Pilots are very nice in the snow too!!

I love my 2015 pilot- im up in the adirondacks and have put over 140k miles on it in rough snow, and it handles like a champ! Ive only gotten it stuck near a trailhead once, and it took about 3ft of snow to stop it. Tows the snowmobile and the argo just fine, and I'll be driving it until the day it dies

Had a 2006 pilot 4w. I took that car hell and back for many yrs. Many people who had offroad specific cars like modified Jeeps were stunned I joined them on the top of mountains where they thought it was impossible for cars like Pilot can make it. It was a matter of right tires and decent driving skill. PILOT is capable of almost anything. She was the best car i ever had.

Welcome to the channel! The problem spot on the pilot is the body where it connects to the subframe. Watch out for rust there. I love mine!

Good luck on your hunt. I just got a 2003 for $2k. It went straight to the dealer to get the recall stuff done. They finally figured out how to fix the transmission problem. They do a software update to adjust the torque converter timing and fix any damaged gears. They add a part that makes the fluid circulate better. All new airbags and ignition and headlight wiring. All for free. I have heard of dealerships only giving a discount or requiring a full maintenance record. The Honda Dealer near me is a good one. I do use a small fold able stool to get in to it

The 2016+ doesn't have as good clearance, but the Traxda USA kit is good. You can fit 30.5 or 31 inch tires even without the lift. The AWD is great, the clearance is the only issue.

Not much of a car guy but I've owned an 02 grand cherokee, an 04 grand cherokee, and an 07 pilot. And the pilot actually puts the jeeps to shame in my (admittedly limited) experience.

I miss my 2012, was one of the best SUV's I've had for off road use. My Explorer I have now isn't nearly as good as what that was as far as the AWD vs the 4WD system it has.

I took my 04’ pilot to Cananea Sonora, went to one of the Sky islands region of the town, the VTM4 really saved my ass going up steep dirt roads I was really surprised how well the 4 wheel drive performed!

They are suprisingly good off-road despite all the weight and width and little clearance. I have a 2009 Pilot as well as a proper wheeler - 6" lifted FJ Cruiser on 35s (see it on my channel). So I took the Pilot to a few trails and it totally overcame everything. The only issue is that it was taking more damage where FJ wouldn't. And that is the baseline: the Pilot will get you pretty much where you'd want to go… with comfort. But it might cost you.

My 2008 HP is completely stock with 245,000 miles and I drove it off-road to Breckinridge Peak 10 no problem. Thing is amazing.

I have a 13 Pilot Touring 4x4. Just put the biggest size AT tires on it that I could. It is AMAZING off road. People underestimate the Pilot and the Ridgeline. It performs sooo well in mud and snow.

Purchased a 2007 for overlanding and never looked back. Easy to maintain, doesn’t burn oil, more than capable off road, spacious, and I got it for way cheaper than any other off road vehicle. Only thing I did is add airbags to the suspension.

I would recommend buying a set of 245-75-16 AT tires first. Then buy recovery gear (4x traction boards, hand winch, straps, etc), then buy a skid plate www.no-lodesigns.com, then a lift

Make sure you double check the subframe in the rear where it meets the body. The rot is repairable, but I would hate for you to pay for the vehicle not knowing about the issue.

@@GotterAdventure i have a 2008 exl with zero rust. I'm in Atlanta, got it for 2200 with all the service record. I did the timing belt kit myself. I also have a family of 3 like you so i'm going to pretty much copy you lol. I love your truck only thing i'm not sure if i can pull off building the skid plate but i'll try. Wish you made a video when you was doing it, you wouldve had alot of views. Look on fb market place and offer up i see them here sometimes for good price. You can probably get a cheap one with little issues for cheap. Stay away from first gen 2006-2008 are the best one's

I do my own auto work. Based on the vehicles age (2007 265,000 miles) I don’t think I have broken anything out of the ordinary. My original front axles failed around 200,000 miles. I learned the hard way not all axles are built the same. Now I am using Napa axles with good results.

@@GotterAdventure -- Good you're using the Crumption Axels. Hey it's a good vehicle you have. It'll do the job in the rust belt. Just cant beat on it too much. No frame. Light suspension. You're faster than me, and you ride on the road better. And you get better gas mileage. But my Tahoe's a tank, full frame, cheaper to fix, takes less damage doing what you're doing. Each to their own brother. Different needs. One isn't better than the other. EDIT: Oh, and axels ... keep away from the ones made in Mexico. Sure you know.

We don't get much to choose from in the honda range any more they have pulled a lot of models out of the European market. Everyone wants audi, bmw Mercedes or rangerovers here it's a shame.

What LED kit did you get? I got full LED headlights and the low beams aren't that bright in the projectors. Should of went with HIDS. The high beams are really bright with the reflectors. The whole kit was supposed to be 6000k and for some reason my fog lights look 8000k.

I just purchased well reviewed LEDs from Amazon for my low beams. They are bright enough for me when properly aimed and paired with my fog lights. You are right HIDs would be more bright!

I just got an 04 pilot came with 2 sets of wheels street and mudders I preffer the mudders give the true speed of the vehicle and gets you out of a jam better than streets

4wd 2007 Pilots don't have VCM! Otherwise personally I would disable vcm.

Are those wheels powered coat? Or what kind of paint did you used?

I used flat black spray paint on the stock wheels. It is easy to touch up. I didn't even mask the tires

You have pretty awesome footage but I've seen a few that have more extreme offroading. Especially the Russian videos, they'll take anything offroad in deep mud. I'm extremely tempted to buy one.

I have been looking at new Toyota 4Runners… We have a 2008 with a 175,000 on the mileage. We are the original owners. We ARE NOT selling it. How does the lift kit effect the tendency to roll over? The suv has a high center of gravity to begin with. Toyota sells a factory lift kit with everything engineered out. Any major system mods needed ie longer brake lines etc.?

There is no way around it. Lifting a vehicle and raising the center of gravity will increase the chance of a rollover in an accident. If you install a 2" lift and keep your saw bars connected you won't experience a big difference in handling. I am lifted 2.5" without a subframe drop and haven't had to make any changes to brake lines. What are your goals for your Pilot?

@@anonymoususer1824 we had a major rust issue. When not out and about it was in our garage. I have a pressure washer and hosed it off quite often. The rust, when I found it, had made its way from the passenger floor to the frame and right front top strut mount. I took it to a friend who does frame repairs. He said it could be repaired but the problem wouldn't be solved. Apparently there was t much I could do about it anyway (to prevent it).

I would recommend buying a set of 245-75-16 AT tires first. Then buy recovery gear (4x traction boards, hand winch, straps, etc), then buy a skid plate www.no-lodesigns.com, then a lift

Depending on the price of the vehicle and the maintenance history I think it could be worth a try. I would recommend having a mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchasing. You should also check the rear for rust where the subframe meets the body.
