With that kit you bought for $2.99 you skipped a step. The u shaped piece goes on before you crimp anything. It makes a smooth transition and put less stress on the cable. I fixed lots of cables on tow trucks. Most cables would only last about 1/2 as long with out that u shaped piece.

Just put some shrink wrap on it. The loose ends

Just buy a cable cutter and swager or you'll end up with a big mess like you have.
