Thank you! I got tired of my wire cable breaking while plowing snow and switched to synthetic ... which lasted me longer. Today --- on my third consecutive day of plowing --- it finally gave where the rope meets at the thimble. After working through the spool, I discovered that the so-called "protective covering" got tangled up in the spool BEFORE the breakage. I looked up ways to save the rest of my line and found this tutorial video. I'll be doing it tomorrow.

Yes get rid of that black sleeve it kills the rope in a plowing setup. Thanks for watching!

@@JohnFrancoNH You are exactly right! When I did the repair this morning, I discovered the black sleeve tangled and ripped up in the spool. I used your method and it worked perfectly! Thanks again.

Ugh. I just had the same issue and I pulled the rope sound and secured it with several small zip ties. Wish I had seen your video before hand. One of the best videos I’ve seen yet.

Excellent video for a field repair. Can't always do the fancy pen in the braid thing when you're in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for posting!

Guys, for snow plowing, do yourself a favor and get a strap that replaces the rope. I change mine out for the winter in a very few minutes. Really saves on the broken ropes...used to have several breaks per winter, but not anymore.
@JohnFrancoNH3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good idea but i use my full winch line in the winter too, i ride all year long. I may just run 2 winch lines one for plowing that gets chewed up and the newer nicer one for the rest of the year. Thanks for watching!

Yes !!! 2in strap on the winch with a d ring . Mine has been on my wheeler for over 7 years of plowing
@lauracurley4583 Жыл бұрын
Do you have a winch stop installed to use with the strap? It looks like the strap would pull right through the rubber winch stopper without the electric winch stop installed.
@BK-dv1hh Жыл бұрын
@@lauracurley4583 yes I do have the stop, however, the A frame of the plow hits the bottom of the bumper before the hook gets to the winch roller, so on mine, it wouldn’t be necessary.

Thank's for posting John...removed my winch line sleeve first ( you were correct as there was abrasion on my synthetic line) Do't think I will be having any additional breaks anytime soon!
@JohnFrancoNH3 жыл бұрын
Good thing you caught it in time. Im gonna end up running one line in the winter for plowing and then the nicer newer line for the rest of the year. Thanks for watching!

So I suspect this would be good for plowing. How strong is this when it comes time to pull your machine out of mud, or perhaps pull someone else out? Thanks!

Old video... but you need a hawse fairlead if running synthetic rope, not the roller used for cable
@jwr7782 жыл бұрын
Great field repair! So my question is if your in your warm garage why didn’t you splice it correctly?
@JohnFrancoNH2 жыл бұрын
well i did.. i had to show you folks both ways...
@salvor12 жыл бұрын
knots are fine for temporary use. you will loose 50% or more of the strength. back weave the eye, it's not hard and you get back near 100%.
@jake-mv5oi2 жыл бұрын
Why not just splice in a new eye on the rope? Knots can cut strength of winch line in half vs a splice and aren't that hard to do.
@JohnFrancoNH2 жыл бұрын
the knot is placed after the eye which takes all the load. Placement is key

You are using a farelead from a cable winch, get a proper aluminum farelead for synthetic rope
@JohnFrancoNH10 ай бұрын
Yes i know. The larger rollers of that fairlead i have are much easier on the rope then the aluminum ones made for it. To sharp of a radius/corner on those shallow aluminum fairleads. Key is they have to be brand new. Never use a worn steel cable fairlead on a synthetic rope.

That’s the wrong Fairleads for Synthetic winch rope…
