Honda sent us their new electric dirt bike, the Honda CRF-E2. This is the first production electric dirt bike that Honda is offering and although this is a dirt bike for kids, we gave it a quick first ride to test it out.

Honda partnered with Greenger Powersports to develop the CRF-E2. Greenger is a brand that has been in the electric industry for quite a while and American Honda leaned on their expertise to create an electric dirt bike that was worthy of being a Honda Licensed Product.
The Honda CRF E2 has a peak power output of 2.5kW and features swappable, 48v 960 Wh battery. You can swap the battery by undoing the seat, releasing the battery support and removing. The whole process takes a couple of minutes.
It's got an adjustable seat height between 24.8 and 25.5inches. The CRF E2 weighs 106 pounds and it has a load rating of 99 pounds.
It’s got a telescopic fork with 3.9” of travel and a DNM rear shock with adjustable preload and rebound and 3.8” of travel
It’s got 12” front and rear wheels mounted with Kenda Millville tires

Honda Greenger claims a Run Time of 2 hours in ideal conditions with a full charge. Charging Time to 100% takes 4 Hours with the provided standard charger and 2.5 hours using their option quick charger.

One of my teachers had a motorcycle shop at our grade school... for 50 years he taught us how to ride, go on riding camping trips and trips to the OHV parks. He recently passed away... my brother has taken over his 'school,' to continue teaching young children. However, one of the owners of the neighboring properties got a judge to shut down all motorcycle activities, for the moment, because of noise. So my brother bought a few electric dirt bikes and continues until they have their day in court. I know people are somewhat against EV's, but I believe they have their place. Let the kids keep riding.

You won't be cleaning carbs and air filters, changing oil, buying gas, replacing spark plugs, rings,pistons,cranks,main bearings,rods,valves,cams,cam chains,radiators,water pumps and gaskets either. A solar charger could zap the extra $1000 battery while you ride. Can't make gas.

Honda needs to make the Cr 85 big wheel totally electric with a 6KW motor and 72 V battery. with this new aluminum frame type. It will sell more than pancakes. So many adults love mini bikes and kids too.

I mean, 2.5kW is more power than the venerable PeeWee 50. This looks like a great starter bike, and dad won't have to piddle with 2-stroke mix. I hope they fill out the line a bit. My first bike was a Suzuki RM50, which has right around 4kW, and man did I have a blast on that thing. I was able to ride it pretty deep into my teens.

One thing about electric motors and the level 2 "crack" at the throttle. Whether you weigh 165 lbs, or 80 lbs, you'd get the same pull with instant torque. Being lighter won't necessarily mean a faster pull because these bikes are all torque and low horsepower. Horsepower and range diminishes with added weight, pulling power does not. It's the same torque just pulling less amperage with a smaller rider. This is as opposed to gas bikes which are all power and less torque. With a gas bike, less rider weight means more speed so a smaller rider might have trouble hanging on. Opposite is true with electric. So as long as the kid is strong enough to hold on to their own weight, they should be able to hold on to the throttle "crack" just fine.

@Chris Tobias The surge of power at the crack of throttle is not an electric motor observation. It's a power curve observation. I found the power delivery off the crack of the throttle on the CRF E-2 to be a bit abrupt and crude in comparison to other electric dirt bikes of this category, or other electric dirt bikes in general.

@@ElectricCycleRider You just need to take that lead bracelet off before riding 😉😆 truthfully, we appreciate the honest feedback and will work with our engineers. We know you know how to ride. We have found though with electric bikes, which you ride all the time. People seem to be comfortable with grabbing the throttle vs rolling onto it as they would with a gas. Gas engines as you know have that lag or initial delay as they wind up. Where as the torque is instant with EV. We worked on a balance throttle response during our 2 year development with Honda, and recommend a smooth roll onto the throttle. With that said, it does not mean we cannot do better. We will take this feedback and look further into this 😀

The result is a long period of time before we see those products released into the market. That being said, it seems there is some urgency from the manufacturers to get electric bikes into the market, which I believe is what we're seeing here.
