Honda ST1300 PanEuropean VS Triumph Sprint 1050 GT

2016 is the last year the Pan European was made. 2015 a 25th Anniversary Edition was made.

True for Europe & thanks for making this point. The ST1300 was lost in North America after 2013, however limited numbers were sold in Europe, I am being told, up to the 2016 model year. Between 2014 and 2020, 241 Honda ST1300's were sold in the UK but it is not known what model year they were from the data I received, just the year they were titled. Pictures and stats on the 2014-16 PanEuropean are hard to come by. Honda.eu, last model year press release for the PanEuropean was in 2010. It is not uncommon for Honda to release past model year motorcycles to dealers in the following or even two years from the manufacture date. As far as the "Anniversary Edition" can you describe what, if anything made this bike special? I am unable to find anything of note, my suspicion is this was a more localized, dealer inspired promotion rather than an actual model variation. @@RodRidesWrenches Hi ! The 25th Anniversary Edition hade some extra minor windprotection / fairing deflectors around the rearview mirrors and on the tops of the side covers. On both sides of the panniers it had stickers with ”Pan European 25th Anniversary Edition” , the topbox had integrated breaklight and spoiler and a luggage rack on top and small armrests. The last years the Pan European had - at least here in Sweden - a gear indicator on the dashpanel.

I own an ST1300. I find there are few reasons not to love it. Yes it is heavy & yes it puts out heat in traffic. But the upside inlcudes a shaft drive, so minimal maintenance. Fast, quiet, handles well, powerful, large fuel tank (29L) & great mileage 19km/L highway means great range. Power windscreen is another huge plus.

Another ST1300 big + is fairings and electric windshield. When you do distance touring in all weather this makes a huge difference. I have a heated seat on mine and that really helps on those chilly mornings and intermittent weather riding.

I found as a passenger the HONDA was a much nicer ride. Plus there were less wind to deal with. You as a passenger sat lower on the HONDA Pan European than you do on the Triumph spirit. Also I found the passenger pegs lower on the HONDA, putting my hips and knees in a better placement for my body. Thank you for the lessons.

Both beautiful machines. l have the Triumph and love it…….I looked at the pan but the deciding factor for me was….price!…Also it’s a triumph and here in the UK there is a history element as well (for me anyway).

I bought a ST 1300 07 model at the beginning of 2022, less than 40k miles. it is just amazing, and it seems to gain respect even from the younger sport bike riders. all in all at roughly 60 years of age it is my favorite bike ive ever owned.. and yes its a heavy machine...a little practice and you really don't notice much... but that being said l most likely would like the 1050 GT, as it is a beauty to behold.

I bought another ST 1100 just last week. I just love that bike, even though power is a little less than the 1300, and now i have two , but will sell the older one at some point. My newer one is similar to your 1300, in regards to low miles, but still does need some maintenance.

I picked up a 2006 Honda st1300 for $4000 with 46,000 miles my buddy has a 2005 for $3,000 with 107,000 miles both bikes are great run great and where definitely will taken care of I went with the Honda simply because of the reliability Honda don’t break

Great comparison I've got the gt and love it , just upgraded the suspension to racetech gold valves and new springs up front and a g3 fully adjustable shock out back. Really helps the bike when 2up or loaded (first one they have made for the gt) also have the bar risers. Really enjoying the bike!

Interesting comparison. Believe it or not, the ST1300 handlebars are a reach for me. I can benefit from higher, more rearward bars. A nice feature for those of us short of limb is the adjustable saddle height. It is probably beneficial for those with longer legs since it can be adjusted to heights that would make riding really miserable. I get around 40mpg (5.88 liters/100km). I wish for more, but the large tank makes up for it. Overall, I am quite happy with the ST1300 and the Concours 14.

Hey Alan, do u still have your ST13? If so, or not, when u travel without the panniers, l thought it looks a bit, so-so, compared to some others wen they don't hav their pan's off. So, the part that stood out for me was the pannier brackets. So l painted them black. Blends with the black surrounding plastics, stand back, hava look, prob solved. Hope that helps if u hadn't thought of it yet.

Thanks for encouraging me to educate myself on British geography. I think a lot of us Americans are somewhat ignorant in this area. Ok, here goes: British Isles is everything. Great Britain is Scotland, Wales, and England. The United Kingdom is Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ireland is Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland. Wow, that's complicated. In the US, the politics are complicated, but the geography is pretty straight forward. BTW your review on these motorcycles is top notch, I'm just not that interested in either one, too big. Thanks

In the same vein I could also say US geography is complicated with D.C. and Puerto Rico not being states, but Alaska and Hawaii are, with sparsely populated Dakota and Carolina being split in a Northern and Southern state, but densely populated California not, while it takes 22 of the smallest states combined to have the same population as California but they together have 44 senators, while California has 2. The 4 most populous states (CA, TX, FL, NY) have the same population as the 34 least populated states. The political imbalance that that causes is plain to see. The geography makes no rational sense in the 21st century. All the while US politics is very straight forward with a two party cartel and the same ideological fights since the 1980s on repeat, with both of them successfully preventing third parties from entering the House of Representatives. The UK parliament on the other hand has representatives of 11 different parties that all have the power to topple the government by simple majority, something that is unthinkable in US politics where the president has the powers of a king to a large extent and even when repeatedly acting irresponsibly and outright criminally won't face any consequences (*cough* the orange manbaby), but the country is considered a democracy while the UK is officially a monarchy. The politics makes no rational sense in the 21st century. //rant over//

Great review, you implemented a lot in a very short time and great production. I have the switch out high way blades / pegs on ST 1300 that fits through side guards and use them more for motorcycle yoga, but a change up in foot position for awhile is great. I’m amazed at the slow handling and tight circling one can do and by applying proper u-turn technique, the ST can turn on a dime. The lower fuel tank gives the bike great centre of gravity, which is great for left turns when waiting for on coming traffic to clear and very often don’t need to put my foot down just coast slowly but it will stand still. I’ve got the after market Sargent Leather seat with super cell foam which is really comfortable. The Delcavics sound great and similar to my Two Brothers exhaust, but I like the profile of The Delcavics. I also find the ST super stable through pools of water By the way I’ve implemented the shark laser beam technique from your cornering video. Works great!!

The Best purchase that you ever made right? Is what a guy who walked up to me in a camp ground this past summer, who’s had 3 ST’s. Get the guy to show you how to take panniers off as well as seat, there is a bit of a trick with that. Have him also show how to reset trip meter. At some point in time if the bike gives you F1 reading, you have to put it on side stand to enable the code flash. Code sheet is on line, I printed out mine from an Australian ST owner site. ST 1300 is well supported on line. Since you have to use one key to unlock things, keys tend to get bent, so order a couple of OEM Honda ST 1300 key blanks and then have them cut at professional lock smiths. I misplaced my 2nd key and went out on a trip my stupidity. I broke one off in fuel tank this summer and lock smith was able to fish it out but none of his after market Honda Blanks would work. OEM Honda ST 1300 key blanks $35 CDN for two did the trick but in cost me 5 days in the middle of a trip live and learn. I get 397 km range on my ST 1300, so 29 liters will get you home on one fill and you’ll fall in love on the trip

@@cyclingsfatsuma9808 I bought my ST in a small Canadian prairie-mining town very much a Harley market, so the guy had hard time selling it. I had my cousin pick it up and had his backyard mechanic who works on Goldwings change out the tires, plugs all fluids air filter, front and back bearings and Front and Back break pads new battery. All the wearables just set at zero and then picked it up. When I get a good deal, I just want to have that piece of mind on zero with wearables. The Mechanic wanted to buy the bike. I’ve had no problem with it and it’s a monster in high mountain passes just a pleasure to ride. I'm still riding at 6c, so you'll do fine in NZ spring.

You are right about the position but not completely, finally someone who understands the problem with upright position. Ofcourse leaning your body forward is better for the spine but there is a limit. I had the most aggressive bike in the world two of them Panigale v4. And sometimes i sufferd lower back pain probobly because of the cramped position with high pegs then the body puts a lot of pressure on the lower back because of high knees low upper body like a clamp. So sports touring position is better for lower back but just enough lean not to much. But the you have other problems wrist and vibrations. But can be solved with a cruise contol so you can rest hands. Because you tend to hold harder with sportier position. The best is to bend elbows and lean forward little bit I do that on all bikes you look like its go time 🤣 best for the whole body is uppright bar lean a bit forward bend elbow. Never hade any problem on my ktm superduke r vould ride it for hours and hours. Not any problems on my Ducati Supersport s not on my fz7 or my Duc scrambler not on my v4 streetfighter not on my xdiavel(lening forward a bit) weight on pegs. So you can also make "upright" and "cruiser bikes" perfect you just have to change the lean forward. And most important keep moving and change position. I have that naturally after riding road bicycle a lot. Your blood have to have the possibility to move in the body and it can only do that good if you move sometimes i stand upright during long trips also.

Dont get too hooked up on it, WE dont !! 🙂 On my 5th ST1300 now, not that I wear them out, I just get bored, think I am finally done.... and end up with another ! Terrific bikes of course and still well able to hold their own against modern machines. I have an ST1100 also, to be honest I long thought the 13 the better bike ....and it is in some areas..... but the 11 definately has a more planted and stable feel ( had a few of these too). Definitely a big fan of Honda's Pan after all these years. Just a shame it was finally deleted rather than seriously updated with a bigger motor and cruise etc as many us had hoped for.... oh well..... PS not sure I like the louder exhaust on a Pan, they sound much better suited to the way Honda intended. In my personal opinion.... 😀

The ST1300 didn’t need t9 be updated with a bigger motor!! The dash is all that really needed improvement. Otherwise they pretty much got the perfect bike. 6th gear is a must though if they ever make another version.

I have an ST1300 AND a Sprint 1050 ST. Why compromise? The Sprint is for ME. I removed the passenger pegs. And the ST1300 is for US. My wife is supremely comfortable on the back. And for the record, You can be a hooligan on either of these beasts.

I have a GT just like yours Rod and really like its capability and honey smooth motor. I don't like its riding position however, as, even with 20mm bar risers, I get shoulder cramps on 600km days. Am considering a really good condition ST1100 for sale locally as the 'distance' bike and using the GT for shorter day rides of say 300km with stops. Thanks for the review!

Hi Gary, I think you will be disappointed in the 1100 PanEuro and would appreciate the 1300 more, just saying. It is hard to go backwards in power and from injection to carburation I have found.Stretching by rotating your arms and shrugging and rotating your shoulders backward helps prior to riding or on a fuel stop. Gary, ST1100 also requires quite a stretch to reach the handlebars. You may find yourself leaning forward too much for your liking resulting in tingling in your upper back and a bit of a neck discomfort from looking up with your head. In my opinion bringing the ST1100 handlebars higher and closer to the rider is a must.

I was lucky enough to find a 2007 in near perfect condition with only ~7000 miles on the clock, although a little pricier I think it will be worth it. Looking forward to that first ride where I'm sure to have a big cheesy grin on my face! I've always enjoyed inline 4 engines (r6, CBR600fs, Daytona 600, speed four etc etc...) 😂 But first time on a triple, so can't wait to see what the triples are about!

Great review, as usual. Did you ever experience any speed wobble on the ST1300? Looking to purchase one, but I am a bit deterred by what some customer complains of speed wobbles at high speeds.

Remember you asked... ENGAGE RANT MODE: IMO The speed wobble seen in the ST was a fabrication based on a few isolated incidents with Police versions. On these Police bikes the old style radios were mounted on the rear of the bike in a compartment that was custom made to not just hold the radio but an axillary lead acid battery which was mounted lopsided to one side of the bike. To any documented knowledge by Honda, these were the only bikes to experience a wobble in excess of 100MPH. The Police model ST1300P was taken out of production after a few years. Again IMO, people in forums are talking out of their a$$ when discussing this. They have either never owned an ST or are mistaking what happened to these Police bikes as their own improperly inflated or balanced tires, worn suspension components like a leaking collapse fork or worn/loose steering stem bearings. I've owned three ST1300's, ridden them with passengers and camping gear, ridden them into three digits on the MPH gauge and NEVER saw anything like this. Do people REALLY think Honda would have made a machine for 13 years, almost completely identical for each one of those years (and yes I looked up the frame, steering bearing and suspension part numbers through those 13 years of production) if it had an inherent liability to violently run off the road? We've seen Honda kill motorcycles in less than three years after initial production, the ST1300 Pan European was a great bike. - Good Luck!

@@motofiction4233 There is no doubt the weight is significant in the 1300, it's not troublesome though since the CG is low. The ST1100 carries it's weight higher, the seating position is flatter and that means you sit on top of it where with the 1300 you sit more inside of the bike, if that makes sense to you... The 1100 is not one of my favorite bikes, if you're looking at one of these types of bikes you may want to throw your leg over a Yamaha FJR1300, preferably one with a 6 speed transmission. The FJR is the smallest feeling of bikes between it, the Honda ST, Kawasaki Concours and does not give up any capacity or features to the Honda or Kawasaki. The Suzuki GSF1250 would also be worth considering since if you can find one, they are typically pretty cheap but don't have as many features but do weigh a lot less as a result. The VFR is much more sporty option and what you gain in maneuverability, lean angle and reduced weight, you loose in carrying capacity. This said I do prefer my VFR1200F to the ST1300 for the way and area I ride in. @ 180HP the VFR1200 is an amazing sport bike that you can tour on. - Good Luck! 🏍

Hello Jonasegway, the bike made more midrange torque with the modifications which was very notable when riding two up and needing to pass on the highway. I did not notice any difference in MPG and to be honest I don't pay attention to these things. I would suggest reducing weight where you can like the factory exhaust, moving to a lithium battery and leaving anything you don't need at home, the ST1300 has so many places to put things you can forget they are there. I have found that the biggest influence to MPG is my right hand and when I see a twisty bit of road it just does not listen well to this sort of reasoning. Good Luck & Thanks for the Question!

I have two ST at the moment. I have had several ST's put 100s' of thousands of miles on each one I have had. I had a Triumph GT and it was a disappointment.

Same experience here, I`ve had 2 955 ST`s and 2 1050`s, including my current one. Having borrowed a friends GT I was also disappointed, it had lost its edge and sharpness and exchanged it for slightly less wind noise and no other benefit.

To me these bikes are too different to compare. The ST1300 is too much of a tourer, no matter what Honda claims. It should be compared to a RT, a FJR. I drive all year round, except for snow and ice. I'm convinced that, if you do that, look for a bike that is used by Police forces and similar organizations. If I had to compare the Triumph with a Honda model, I would go for a VFR. But then again this is all very personal and I'm a bit of a Honda guy...

Just found your channel, I’m in Vancouver too, on a dr650 now, riding all season, most likely waved each other riding along hwy99 lol, looking to add a touring bike, torn on the st1300, the weave issue scares me as I ride pretty “spirited” sometimes, has this ever been an issue with yours? Any known fixes? Thanks!

Remember you Asked! Nope, Never had three ST1300's, regularly ride quickly over mountain roads with passengers and even gear. There are a lot of excuses why this happens, worn or loose steering head bearings, forks low on oil from leaking, a Givi or other non Honda tour pack... I will put my money behind improper weight load and improper suspension preload/rebound. Let's face it, most ST1300 riders are older and us older guys deserve a nice comfy ride so we soften the preload and ignore the rebound dampening on the rear shock. Then we decide to head up a fast road we're unfamiliar with, add a passenger for their annual ride or load as much camping gear on the bike we can and still have room for the rider to sit. If you don't adjust your suspension to match your aspirations/weight/speed you are in for some hurt. When was the last time a rider who had this problem claims to have checked their suspension sag? I put more faith in Honda engineers than most rider's discipline... Thanks for the question & hope you'll be a subscriber! 👍
