I have had the pleasure of working in manufacturing for both of these companies. I was associated with Honda for 10 years, then worked for Polaris for 2. I was part of the recall field team for Polaris. I can honestly say that there would never be a situation where I would choose a Polaris product over a comparable Honda product. The quality of the Honda will be better than that of Polaris 100% of the time.

Wonder where the Can-am’s fit into that quality mix?

@Dash I can't speak to the manufacturing quality of can-am. I can say that when I was at all the powers ports dealers in socal, I saw fewer in repair shops, but I suspect their manufacturer process is sub par right with polaris. These 2 make what their customers want at about a 40% profit margin. It's what they do. Honda has cars, jets, drones, all the way down to 2-cycle, no room for mediocrity.

First off I’ve had RZRs, and I’ve had a ton of fun when I got my first XP. But they were all used, and between 1200 - 1800 miles. My 12 XP was a ton of fun and surprisingly never let me down in 300+ miles. But even though I didn’t have any issues with my XP, or the others I was always wondering when they were going to let me down and die. When it comes to Honda I’ve had a bunch of ATVs and dirt bikes. My first dirt bike was a Honda XR200R which was great, and never had a issue in the years of abuse I gave it on the trails. All my Ranchers were equally as reliable and fun to use. But my first ever SXS was a 2017 Honda Pioneer 500. It was in the price range I wanted to be in for my first new, well anything on wheels with an engine. Now I did test drive everything else in the sub 10k price range, but was won over by the fact that the Honda just felt like it had more power than it really had unlike the Other options. Suspension travel was a joke compared to the competition, but I knew it wasn’t going to let me down. I beat that thing like it owed me money, but it never gave me a single problem in 2,000+ miles. The downside was the suspension for sure, but the shiftable transmission was also a bit of a sore spot with its clunky shifting, and terrible tuning in Auto mode. I ended up selling it to my dad as a workhorse for him and it’s been great with zero problems for him as well. Fast forward to August of 2019 and I was looking for my next SXS but new this time. I knew that the XP900 that I had was great for me spec wise, but it was getting higher in miles, and I knew something would go wrong. I test drove everything in the 20k price range and was stuck between the Polaris General, and the Honda Talon X. After a lot of thought, and research I ended up going with the Honda 1000X. I absolutely love it, everything works exactly right, the shifting is buttery smooth for any situation, suspension is amazing, and the reliability factor is undeniably the best in the industry. It may have its one trim level, but it’s perfect with its standard roof, great power steering, and transmission modes. I have jumped it, rallied through root and rock infested trails, and climbed over rock gardens with ease. So in the end the Honda doesn’t have the most hp, suspension travel, or a sound system, but it does perform above its numbers, and will get me home every time without fail, and that’s a feature nobody else can say for sure.

Its just hard to beat a Honda. I've had XR's, CR's, Accords, 300EX....now I'm looking at a SXS and the Pioneer seems to be the way to go for a family fun machine. Not really into a super high performance machine as I want my 11 year old to grow up riding it, but a 75% sport and a 25% work (keep my mountain bike trails clear).

Kenny Dunn you won’t be disappointed with a Pioneer. The 500 did have really rough shifting (by design), and low travel suspension but I find myself missing it. Luckily every time I go home I can still play with it in the much tighter trails on my families property. I’m not exactly sure when, but once my Talon is paid off I can see myself getting another Pioneer (700 or a 1000) for utility or my wife kid SXS.

I have a 2012 Wildcat 1000 I purchased new, over 3000 miles on it, and love it! But recently bought a Talon X, all I can say is wow, the transmission changes everything, I love being able to control the rpm, and the engine braking is great, downside is ride quality, the Talon has a very firm ride, even with the shocks set to the softest setting, I have a Shock Therapy spring set ordered, anxiously waiting to get them installed!,

I would personally go for the pro XP, I have owned a rzr for 5 years and it's been pretty reliable with no issues other than one recall. The belt thing is not an issue either if you drive-in low when you should be, I haven't broke a belt in over 10 years of quading and I have two belt driven Polaris ATV's. Also I have a group of friends that rides, all but 1 are razors, prior they were Honda, Kawasaki guys and was surprised to see all still riding rzrs at our last ride.

All the people in here bashing polaris and CVTs... If your blowing belts you dont know how to operate a vehicle with a CVT. I got my first Polaris CVT ATV 13 years ago. still have it to this day, ive put over 4500 miles on it, never even came close to blowing a belt. I changed it for the first time a couple of years ago, still looked pretty good. I truly believe a CVT is the lightest and most efficient type of transmission for powersports. could you imagine a snowmobile with a gearbox? it would be as big of a joke as the big heavy 4 stroke sleds.

Between the two machines, Honda Talon X. But with such a wide variety I’d be more split between the Can am Commander 800xt or the Yamaha X2 since personally I dont hit the dunes. Plus, it would be a far better choice helping maintain the family property and just a touch cheaper than either the Talon or Rzr Pro XP. The X2 has (in my opinion) the best setup cvt but the Commander XT has larger tires, bumpers and winch right out of the box. The work and play machines are very under rated in my opinion, do you really need to go 60-70mph on a trail?

I picked up a talon x for 16000 so I feel like I got a deal. I’ve never felt like I needed more power for the type of riding I do. Plenty of people that bog there machines are very impressed with the low range in the talon when they are spinning 35 inch tires without any worries about smoking a belt.

To me , when you buy NEW you expect quality. You buy used. You expect aftermarket support usually in the case of go fast goodies. The last New sports machine i bought was a 2001 DS650. Its was everything that I wanted. And it lasted for ever no matter how much I beat on it. And modified it. I've been out of the "game" now for 10years. But when looking at today's choices for SxS. Its so AWESOME to see the amount of competition there is in the industry. For my needs, 2 machines get me excited. 1st the Honda Talon X, 2nd the yamaha Wolverine. Those two machines peak my interest very much.

30 years ago I was in the market for an ATV. A friend of mine that owned a Polaris and worked at a tractor dealer that sold Polaris told me they were new in the market and not as good as Honda or Yamaha. I bought a 1994 Yamaha 400 Kodiak and it was a great machine for the farm. In 2011 the Kodiak was showing it's age and I decided we needed a SXS. The problem was most SXS's cost more than I wanted to spend and most brands had few models to choose from. I bought a Polaris ranger 500 mid size for a reasonable price from my local dealer. WOW this machine was great. We had zero issues with it but the kids were bigger so we bought a 2018 Ranger XP1000. We sold the 500 for way more than we thought we would get and the new owner is still running it. In between the Rangers I wanted a "cheep" ATV and bought a Polaris 500 sportsman, then a 850 sportsman and then a RZR 1000S. And now a RZR XP Pro. No breakdowns or lost time but a few minor issues. A temp sensor, a spark plug coil and a brake sensor. Nothing that kept me from riding. So for me every time I needed or wanted a new machine Polaris had a model for me. I do believe Honda and Yamaha have better quality but Polaris always had a model for my needs and has never given me a reason to jump ship. My son has 4 SXSs and the 2 Can Ams are DOA behind the barn but his YXZ and RZR are still going strong.

Agreed. May I also suggest a drag race on a high traction surface and a rolling drag race. Then I would love too see a fuel economy test using the both machines at the same time. Then after a few hours check to see how much fuel is left. A bigger tank doesn't allow mean better range. Despite having a smaller tank my dad's 500 Suzuki Vinson with a 5 speed manual gets nearly twice the range than his 650 Kawasaki Brute Force with a CVT.

Definitely less off the line, once it's going, or rolling start, it's gone. Rzrs usually run bigger tires that the 2016 17 and 18s just can't without a gear reduction kit. That's 2k just for the kit, 2k that the rzr could use in upgrades to make it even quicker, or better in the mud

The Pro XP...well, perhaps a 72" version on 32s with beadlocks from the factory for us on the West Coast? Price point kills it for me though on the top XP Pro....which is what I'd want. NorcalFA5 I agree, never had an issue with any brand when proper maintenance is done. I have a ‘19 XP4T and we love it, over 1200 miles in 6 months with no issues. It’s very comfortable and has plenty of power with no mods. Still looks like new too. I would try a Talon 4 seater but they are too late to the game and under powered imo.

I have a 2014 and I spend $1000 almost every trip on repairs. Never any motor issues, just crappy plastics that come apart at seams and weak suspension. A lot of this probably got fixed in newer models but Polaris should stand behind the junk they put in the 2014 and do some recalls.
@snowrulesnate
@snowrulesnate 4 жыл бұрын
Jarret Fink interesting you’re having so many issues with plastics and connections. Not sure how that could be an issue unless it has to do with the conditions like contact with major brush, rocks, ground...I’ve owned several brands and not had an issue. Remember, a lot of the complaints people have are from lack of maintenance or operating in conditions these expensive toys were never intended for, thus failures. I wouldn’t recommend a turbocharged machine to anyone who can’t keep it clean, they produce more heat this won’t last, not to mention the extra power which can break drive lines.
@Fly4Video
@Fly4Video 4 жыл бұрын
@@snowrulesnate It happened without any contact. I showed it to the dealer and he said that the plastic was bad quality. He also said it looked like the bold had been over tightened from the factory causing the plastic to crack and then the first time being vibrated the cracks spread everywhere.

Overall I really like my X. Great fit and finish as they say, outstanding good looks. Comfortable seating, adjustable steering column. And everything else mentioned in the video. But it has flaws. We ride in the Mojave Desert, and the stock air filter is a joke. First of all, it's a one or two use pony that runs 50 bucks. Intake is positioned to suck in the dust raised by the front tire. You can get into the transmission quicker than you can get to the filter. A PITA. I'm adding a pre-filter today that should increase the life of the stock filter, but it still requires pulling off two big chunks of the machines covering and taking out the 11 screws to pull the OEM filter to access and clean the pre-filter. Also there is a device in the filler neck that causes you to take several minutes to get the last gallon or so of gasoline in the tank. It can be removed. My final complaint his Honda failed to put in a display panel. Oh, you say they did? Oh, there it is! Cute. Useless even on smooth pavement.

I bought a 2014 RZR XP1000 and have had non stop problems. All my issues were common and the dealer has told me Polaris just doesn't care. Example. The plastics along the floor board/running boards are garbage. With less than 50 hours they fell apart at every bolt whole. Mine now has more JB Weld than plastic. Also the A arms all bent and the rear trailing arms bent. I had to upgrade all of them. And we don't ride hard at all. Pretty much every trip I have had to drop $1000 in repairs. I'm one repair away from calling it quits and buying a fishing boat...not really.

Witch of the 2 machines have the most aviable after market parts and are easy to work on because I’m on a budget and expensive breakdowns would be a burden but I’m not in to mud so I’m sure they would be less frequent for me.

I noticed that too. typical Polaris quality. they put all these "features and bling" on their machines but no reliability. you can sprinkle glitter all over a pile of crap, but at the end of the day you still have a pile of crap. go with yamaha, honda, or kawasaki. leave the ticking time bombs to the rich who can afford to fix them all the time.

Having owned the original RZR 800 and its issue with the air cleaner sucking in dirt that caused after only 300 miles to have the motor to burn oil so bad that it would only get 20 miles before needing a quart of oil, in a system that only has 2 quarts of oil. Then Polaris not honoring a warranty fix of this issue makes owning another Polaris product not a possibility unless Polaris offers a 4 year wheel to wheel warranty and doesn't dodge its responsibility to address its product issues head-on . That being said I also owned a Honda Rincon 650 with a DCT transmission that was very reliable, but the Talon has also had its growing pains with radiator fan recall and the overly harsh rear shock setup and not offering the "Live Valve" shock system on the 2 seater 1000X or 1000R models really make it a tough choice considering the Kawasaki KXR 1000 entree into this equation even more of a difficult buying decision, as well as the Yamaha 1000R SS to consider. Then with Honda so far only is offering an aftermarket Jackson built turbo for the Talon, and with Yamaha has its own Sidewinder turbo motor that they somehow has failed to utilize on their YXZ 1000R is mind boggling too. So in closing power, suspension, reliability and comfort are what were all after and not just chasing after the next shinning thing to hit the market.
