The 2019 Honda Talon 1000R and 1000X are perhaps the most anticipated sport side-by-sides to hit the market since the introduction of the segment. After our first two full days of testing we can attest that most drivers and passengers will not be disappointed. Sharing identical 999cc, dual clutch transmissions with both auto and manual shift modes, the most significant differences between the 1000X and 1000R are their dimensions and suspension travel. For our first test review of the two machines we'll evaluate their performance, how they stack up against other machines in their class like the YXZ1000R, RZR XP 1000 and tell you how they compare to help you pick the Honda Talon that's best for you.

We are sure that Allen already has a lot of thought into what modifications he will want to make to our test units. Before that, there is a little bit more stock testing that we would like to do. There are a few more questions that we have unanswered although we stand by the fact that the new Talons do not disappoint.

@UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm sure we'll have plenty more Talon videos coming in the future. The compression ratio is typical Honda in a good way. Make it run well reliably and leave lots of room for people to hop it up till their heart's content. We're with you, we can't wait to see what the aftermarket will do either.
@BarnStangz
@BarnStangz 5 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, that's what I was thinking too, keep the compression not too wild so that the engine doesn't lose reliability. But I have a feeling we're going to see some massive compression bumps. 13:1 I bet, that would pickup 25-30 horse right there. Or lower it and add boost! What a time to be alive!
@UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 5 жыл бұрын
@@BarnStangz I bet you're right! It already has a nice broad powerband so more power everywhere would be good.
@shawnmenzenberg6442
@shawnmenzenberg6442 5 жыл бұрын
I wish it worked that way. Back in the late 80's the IROC Nascar 358" Chevy's only lost 12 horsepower going from 12.7-1 down to 9.5-1 compression with no other changes. If you put in a longer duration cam and improved the cylinder head breathing coupled with a lot higher redline it might make the extra 25-30 horsepower you are looking for. Honda CBR1000 motorcycles only picked up 5 horsepower going from 12-1 to 13-1 along with a few other changes. Compression alone doesn't make that much horsepower. Your best bet would be to switch it to E85 and put 12 to 15 pounds of boost to it. 10-1 would be just fine as long as the pistons are strong enough. It has piston oil jets so it should last well mentioned at 5:18.
@BarnStangz
@BarnStangz 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, boost would be nice. I didn't know that this engine had oil piston jets, that nice and will really help cooling! I can't wait to see what kind of power these things make when boosted. I think the Africa Twin is quite proven, so now it's up to the aftermarket.

Best video of Talon yet... If you were to run the same size tire all the way around would it hurt the drivetrain seeing that the factory set up has unique sizes front and rear?
@UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the love. To answer your question, running much larger diameter tires and or a Wheel and Tire combination that is both much larger and heavier would put some additional Demand on the drivetrain, not that it would have a profound impact on reliability depending upon how you drive , where you drive. Most of the side by side projects we drive these days are set up square, or what the same size wheel and tire at all four corners. Polaris has this set up from the factory on the Turbo S. The first advantage of doing this is that if you get a flat you can swap the tires front to rear and keep going. If you carry a spare wheel and tire one-size-fits-all. Setting the car up Square usually results in a narrower rear tire they can be broken loose and slid around more predictably. I hope this answers your question, please let me know if I miss something. First post of the day. Thanks for the question.

Thank you! It seemed that while the 68" Talon had some slight advantages in stability in fast rough stuff, the X was so well mannered and yet more nimble. The X is a bit more versatile for some drivers and while you expect the X to feel notably less stable, its super stable and predictable feeling. Maybe we're all just a little surprised how good the X turned out to be.

UTVonDemand glad to hear that. Being on the East Coast the X seems like the better option. I’m sure it kept you a little cleaner bringing the tires inside the wheel well too. @@NCdragon21 daughter first couple days the only thing we really noticed with the shifting was an occasional upshift while climbing a steep Dune when you didn't want the car to upshift. @UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 5 жыл бұрын
We have never heard other manufacturers say that you cannot land with the power on. However, experience has demonstrated that with most machines Landing with the power on will result in broken axles. We can attest to this. Mini racers learn to land off the gas to save the drivetrain. Honda pointed out to us when they first revealed the machines back in November that they specifically developed them to handle landing on the throttle the same way that their customers became accustomed to doing on their dirt bikes and ATVs. We found it to be one of the most impressive things they said about the machine. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Have you had a chance to review the Fox Live suspension version of the Talon? I’m considering the talons for our local racing series (hare scramble format, Texas ranches mostly, variable terrain), and wonder if the electronic suspension would be a deterrent more than an asset.
@UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 3 жыл бұрын
We have tried the Honda live valve setup back to back with the standard Fox shocks in the Honda Talon 4. The computer-controlled suspension does well at keeping the car cornering flat in turns. The drawback to it is that it does not allow as much weight transfer to the outside front tire which cuts down on steering accuracy a little bit when you are really driving hard into turns. Our takeaway thus far is that live valve works good for most drivers but it may not be ideal for the most highly skilled drivers. We would probably stick with the standard suspension and put the money we saved into a custom spring and valving set up.

However, with this machine being built more for speed and sport driving I can get on board with the I-4WD as you want the machine to make more choices on the fly for you. Cybervavik. You asked about engine braking calibration, it's not calibrated like on a CVT as it has a gear box, so it's up to you to choose how much or how little you want. I found myself kicking it up a gear on downhill decent, so I controlled braking with my foot. You were also concerned about radius rod clearance. I think you will find it to be about the same as every trailing arm car, with the exception of the RZR Turbo S model with ground clearance arms and radius rods. It will be better than the XP900. Personally ground clearance over large rocks turns into issues for me, so I end up with Teixeira Tech on my stuff for that added clearance and durability. Teixeira is already working on a line of product for the Talon. The power is more than adequate, It's only down to the turbos and when I run off road, I don't really care if I drive a Turbo, I can haul ass in a non Turbo. The only off road stuff I do that I miss the Turbo is when I get up over about 7000 ft. elevation, then non turbo's go really flat.Thanks for your interest in what we do and your honest comments.Allen Knowles

My one problem that I don't understand, every video I have seen they complain about tire size being to small at 15" rims and 29" tires. What size rims and tires does it need and in changing them wouldn't it effect the shifting of the motor in automatic. Were I live in Western KY it is mostly trail riding so I would need the 1000X. Could you please explain the tire situation to me, thank you and I enjoyed you video.
@proquad9409
@proquad9409 5 жыл бұрын
They are not too small. I just like to run the same size in all four corners. They handle a little better that way and one spare covers it all. Although you can just get a spare front it will work on the rear if needed. I think most will be happy with the stock tires on the X, but when they do wear out look at the Kanati Mongrel or GBC Terra Master.If you change them you would most likely go with 30" so it would be an insignificant change on the gears, and give you a couple more miles an hour of top speed.Allen Knowles

To be honest, we think most manufacturers would do well to keep it simple and simply have a two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and four-wheel drive with differential lock setup. It's not that we have a problem with Hondas unique 4 wheel drive setup we just don't see a tremendous benefit in trying to fix something that is not broken. It kind of makes sense transferring power to the wheel that's getting traction however, we would still like a lockable front differential it just so it's there.

We watch most people driving out on the trail and believe that they would be better off with a bit less horsepower and a bit more reliability. Most Japanese manufacturers typically leave a lot of horsepower on the table for those wanting more. We can't wait to see what the aftermarket does with these things.

Honda is an engineering company first. They want their products to last. To much power causes more issues than enough horse power. Balance is key in all engineering. That produces reliability. Im not racing so I dont care about top speed. All I want is ability and reliability. Honda will deliver as usual. I love towing out the turbos.

I love how everybody assumes it's going to be reliable because it's a Honda. I've owned many Hondas over the years and they were reliable. But if you look every vehicle they make right now is on a consumer watch list. They don't make one SUV or car that's reliable anymore. Acura took 26th Place in reliability when Lexus took first. Major lawsuits on CRV. Civic and Accord bad Transmissions. The Odyssey has always been a joke. So as a Honda Fanboy I'm very upset. So I'll hold off on the Talon until I make sure it really is reliable.

Totally agreed. We'd like to see it with a more modern engine and longer travel suspension but other than that let's go with the same basic tough as nails design. We mentioned to Polaris at a press event a couple years back that they need to build something like the pilot that doesn't cost a $1000 every time you tip it over. We would love to do a vintage test on one of those.

@UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 5 жыл бұрын
LMAO. KZbin viewers like you crack us up. Let's dive into our review to see if we really said nothing negative. First, we said it has a modest 104 horsepower. Honda made a big deal out of Hill start assist in Allen pretty much said it might be good for someone but he'll never use it so... we said that the I four-wheel-drive seemed it to work well but we didn't have a different type of system there to compare it to directly. We said that the tires were okay but they weren't that great and we would be switching them out in the future. We criticized Honda for not setting the car up with the same size Wheel and Tire all the way around. Allen said that it's six-foot-four he felt cramped in the cabin. Although the 1000x suspension performed well, we pointed out that it is down on suspension travel compared to other machines in the class. Wait, there's more, Allen said that he felt the rear end get light on a few occasions when catching air which left him wanting to make some suspension adjustments in the front that he did not have time to make and would like to try in the future. That basically translates into the car wasn't coming off of jumps perfectly level and he'd like to change it. If you have any other specific questions we would be happy to do our best to answer them for you based on our two days of riding experience. yes, there are probably more things that we will discover about this machine in the future that we like and don't like and we have no fear about disclosing those too. Our videographer has been attending press events for over 15 years. Allen has been attending media events for over 30 years, That's probably longer than you have been alive. Basically, what I'm telling you is we are over the new feeling of attending a media event Has long since passed and we're focused on getting down to the business of testing the vehicle. the compliment that comes from comments like yours is that you feel our content comes off as bought, paid for, and professional. So thanks for that. Also, as usual, the viewer making the accusation that we have nothing to say about the machine has once again demonstrated poor retention skills. Try paying attention next time. Thanks for watching and commenting.

UTVonDemand Lol well I’m 50 and have been in the desert riding since 75 and I’m 50 so that prediction was all wrong but I would have went that way to try and knock down the critical criticism as well so I know now we are of equal intelligence here. To be totally honest I’ve seen a few videos from that event you reported from before I seen yours. I must admit I wrote that comment early into the watching of the video and it was unfounded by the end of the video sir. I gave it a thumbs up but forgot to delete my comment at the end. I stood corrected by the end of the video. I love the response though. If you see the time I posted it was about 5 hours past my bedtime lol. I got lost in KZbin land again.
