Honda Transmission Rebuild Video - Transmission Repair
On this video we see what it takes to Rebuild a Honda Transmission, what parts it takes and what has been working to correct some of the common failures on these transmissions.
Blue Overheated Torque Converters has been a common issue on these Transmissions for a long time and we still see this regularly to this day.
Although there are various shift correction kits and special valves out there, all work really good on correcting the issue with the lack of converter feed fluid. I like them all. So if a deciding factor is important to you on which method to use, all I can say is this, They all work.
Keep in mind that there are "other" fixes or items that can be added to the rebuild, but it is not really necessary if they're not really needed, I'm not mentioning any but I know some of you will.
With that being said I like to thank you for watching this video and liking it and sharing it.
Thank you guys for your support.
Please Subscribe if you not already. Thanks.

This wasn't a rebuild. It was a full Tech College video handbook on how an instructor should conduct a video. Not just rebuild it with music in the background, but superior understanding of every part and detail explanations on everything you touch. I don't even have a Honda but I just couldn't turn away from the wealth of information you were giving away. Thank you!

Hiram, I just wanted to say thank you! MY My 16 y.o. son stumbled onto a beautiful 2004 fully loaded Acura with a bad trans; for $1,000. We watched your tear down and rebuild videos extensively and it significantly helped us do that awesome father-son project every father dreams of. Although it took us a while as he did all the work himself, we now have a fully rebuilt BDGA sitting on our shop bench waiting to go back into the car. I am confident it will work when we fire it up in a few weeks. Again, thank-you. You're the best!. You're part of the Father-son experience we shared; it was like you were there with us the whole way. Paul and Ryan.

How did your transmission rebuild turn out??? Because I'm about to rebuild my 05 Acura TL bdga tranny
@paulpetery1736
@paulpetery1736 8 жыл бұрын
+Wendell Greenidge The Acura TL is not fully together yet, so no test yet. About 2-3 more weeks (we take our time due to the learning experience for my son). Helpful things: I got the Sonnex caps for the valve body as mentioned in the video (they have o-ring seals, so no scoring of the old caps needed, and no leaks!). Also did the translabs shift correction kit. also the Buddy Brushes for polishing the valve body (well worth the 40.00 paid). Got the torque converter and master trans rebuild kit from Rockauto at great prices. Watch the video several times, it's helpful. What I caught on my own was where the counter shaft and secondary shaft sealing rings meet metal- check those metal areas closely for wear- replace if needed. The rebuild was easy. I'm confident it will work. If not, I'll do it again until I figure out me error. Got all the trans hard parts from acurapartsforless- I replaced all the shaft bearings (6), and also the 1st gear hub bearings (4). FYI, my largest problem was in the 3rd gear clutch pack - worn metals and discs. Oh yes, I also replaced the 3 and 4th gears sensors as people report them going bad and wearing out the 3rd gear clutch pack. You know that the 2004 Acura TL Dealership manual can be downloaded online- it will serve you well as that has a BDGA trans. In your tans rebuild kit, some of the metal discs look the same- they are not- some are of different thicknesses- get a digital caliper gauge. I think BDGA's are in the Acura TL, Honda Pilot and van - so look for those manuals as well.

Thanks for the Video, It brought back the good old days of when one could afford to take care of their property. There was a place in Memphis, that tore down and rebuilt Transmissions " All makes and models " They would give you a choice of either a complete overhaul or a swap out. 800 for the overhaul inspected by instructors and students, Took 1/2 a day wait time and 25oo for the swapout. They were fair and trustworthy. Good bunch of fellas and they really knew what the hell they were doing. Over haul got you new steam cleaned transfer case with all new rubber o rings and filters. , the swap out was a completely rebuilt transmission. It was around 150 thousand miles when you would need to require another transmission. And it didn't cost you a arm and a leg to do it either. This was a Transmission school and it was a real good one to. When you graduated from this place , you knew something. The place could handle 5 yo 6 cars at a time. It had quite a set up and was one of the best transmission repair shops in the south east. This school quite possibly brought in around 300,000 to 500,000 per year. Each area did only one thing at a time. Ex' break down, ,,,, inspection,,,,,,, steam cleaning,,,,, recondition/ replace new,,,,,,,,inspection again,,,,,reassembly,,,,, reinstall . all returns were handled just like a 1 year warranty. 45% of the profits went for the Student that couldn't afford his or her tuition. There was a waiting list 2/3 years long just to get into this school. and the customers were placed on a month to a 6 month waiting list to get in. To bad that there aren't any such thing today, ToDay ist's just Gouge and rob the public for all that can be gotten.

I just wanted to say that I don't own a Honda or Acura and don't know that I will any time soon. However, I started watching this video and was so impressed with the amount of knowledge, detailed information, and quality of it that I actually watched the whole video. I am quite fascinated with the internal working of automatic transmissions/transaxles and have never found a quality source of information to explain them, until now. I do plan on watching more of your videos in the future. Thank you for posting these. JOB WELL DONE!

This video has saved me from losing even more money paying the wrong guy for a "rebuild". I split the trans to find that the transmission had only been cleaned and clutches installed. I found a total of 4 valves completely stuck upon tear down & inspection. Without this video I would have not had the confidence to tear into one of these transmissions. Without this video and your wealth of knowledge I wouldnt have cleaned, inspected and assembled right the first time.You are a natural born teacher and get right to the point without getting of track, which is key when assembling this transmission. I was able to rebuild my transmission with this video right by my side every step of the way. Hi Hiram, You are awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge about transmissions to the rest of us gearheads. I have a 2000 Honda Accord V6 Ex with a B7XA (Imagine that, the same one in your video) I watched your video and decided it was worth the savings to try for myself. It took me around 60-70 hours from pulling the engine to cranking it up after the build. I have got about 1000 miles on it since the rebuild and it runs perfect. I could not have done this without your help and expertise. You are a very seasoned technician and your instruction was invaluable as you showed us all about this little machine. We all appreciate good instruction, and you are the Professor! I had to work out troubleshooting and changing a few of the solenoids because after the build I had a heavy first gear downshift, but after replacing the solenoids it has been perfect. I cannot thank you enough. Sincerely, Mike Shaw

@@olbricky6824 Sure, If I can be of any help I will try. It has been a couple of years since I did the job but the transmission is still running strong. The first thing you need to do is buy an online factory service manual from ATS and read about how to do this to make sure it is something you can handle. If you watched Hiram's video and are not intimidated then you should be able to handle it, it does require access to good tools as well. Good luck!

@@michaelshaw1906 sweet.. it would just be if I get stuck on something..you can never be too sure on part orientation or how something is supposed to go together. I downloaded the BAXA/M6HA ATSG manual, some parts diagrams and some ATRA literature/diagrams for Honda 3 shaft trans a few weeks ago and have been studying the transmission pretty much every day for a month. I have watched Hiram's Honda 4 speed tear down video a couple of times and have had this video on loop for about a month. The one thing I am not sure on is which Overhaul Kit is being used/recommended by the manufacturers at this time and which shift kit to use.. I understand there are two ways to modify the line to converter charge. Drill a hole in the valve body or buy the special valve? At first it looked a little intimidating in the video because all of the parts but I feel like it's groups of parts that go together rather than a million individual parts. Also, for the valves that don't have o-rings at the end, Hiram and ATRA indicate a groove should be cut into the end facing the retainer. Is the groove that is cut into the valve supposed to do the sealing itself or are we adding another o ring in the groove???
@michaelshaw1906
@michaelshaw1906 2 жыл бұрын
@@olbricky6824 that sounds like a great start. I would be sure to check all of the shift solenoids before pulling the tranny first. My trans actually had bad solenoids and when I tore into it I found that internally was still serviceable and did not need a complete rebuild. But I already had all of the stuff. The solenoids are not real expensive and are worth the effort. I actually got mine fro LKQ. But if you are sure you need to rebuild I will have to look up what I got to put in it. It was a rebuild kit with a 1,2 shift kit included. You just have to step up a couple of holes in the valve body plate and replace a couple of valve body springs. They give you everything you need to do it. Send me your email address and I will try to send you a list of parts I used. shawmichael2003@gmail.com

I should have realized it was my mistake. I was so paranoid about the chaffing that I over compensated by making sure the shafts came up as much as possible. In doing this I caused it to be chaffing on top instead of the bottom. When I took my time and assembled it correctly, the shafts rose perfectly and the BAXA is whisper quiet. Test drove the car tonight and it works great. Thank you for very helpful videos that enabled us to do this.

I couldn't believe you were doing what you were doing. :) So, let me say this: It was an absolute honor to watch you work - an absolute honor. Thanks. N-6395T p.s. just a question: Why did you not use a "X" pattern, when you torqued your bolts? Over the years, I've always seen the cross pattern used, to "pull the case halves" down together. Loved that torque wrench! :)

***** They *used to* also teach how to put a handful of metal filings in the pan- to swindle unwary customers. Ever see the news show 20/20 back in the early 90's? They'd get a new crated trans, mark it on video- install in a vehicle- make it look "used" (dirty) and have a woman bring it into an Aamco shop. *BUSTED TWICE*.

Holy crap that's about as comprehensive as you could possibly ask for. Amazing job. Having audio only on the left channel the whole time is a bit annoying though. What program are you using to edit with? Maybe I can show you how to split, duplicate, and merge the audio channels to fix a missing channel. Then you'll never have a missing stereo channel again. Seems like it might be an issue with the microphone but it's actually fixable in most editing programs. You just copy the left channel to the right channel and it becomes mono in both speakers.

Hiram, Thank you for your detailed and careful instructions. I have a Honda Odyssey 2000 (B7XA) 175,000 miles, and was having trouble with TCC code P0740, then I started having additional problems with shifting -- on and off. I added an in-line filter, and it cleared the problems for a while... Anyway, I decided to follow your directions and use the Sonax upgrade kit in addition to the full overhaul kit. The engine also developed an oil leak at the rear main seal, so that forced the issue of whether or not to remove the transmission. I had a few missteps along the way (1 - forgot one of the small filter screens in the valve body; 2 - pushed one of the shaft seals on too far; 3 - got the shift cable on the wrong side of the subframe; and probably some others...) Each required some dissassembly and reassembly. Anyway, I am delighted with the result. The transmission works better than when we bought the Odyssey. I have put about 6000 miles on the van, and even taken a few trips. It is great to have the vehicle again.

WOW HIRAM Your video is so explanatory. I have a great idea how an AT Trans works now. You took the time to explain and film to share with the world. You have done such a great job that will help thousands of people out there. Honda Accord 97 trans rebuilt at 120k now running at 195k no issues. Honda Oddy 01 trans rebuilt at 95k now running at 170 no issues. Although, I came here in search of a hissing noise in my Oddy...the noise is when park or running at low speed with out acceleration, once I press gas pedal, noise is gone, release gas pedal and noise is back. Went down where the trans and axles meet and seems like the noise comes from that specific place. Park, Neutral and even in Drive, but only when deceleration takes place, when Im about to stop. Any advise will help me and others, thanks again for sharing your wisdom and years of experience. ...and of course, subscribed, and liked.

Thank you so much for posting your videos. As a former Honda tech, we never got the opportunity to open these units up. I am currently working on a B7TA out of an 01 Odyssey, a vehicle I purchased for my wife. The unit appears to be a Honda reman unit with the painted blue bolts. The transmission had a lack of engagement issue. Sometimes you would get forward/ reverse movement. Other times it felt like it was in neutral. The fluid inside looked terrible, burnt and black. Although the clutches don't look too terrible, there is quite a bit of wear. The converter charge circuit was sticking, but I was able to remove it by lightly tapping it. It certainly wasn't moving as freely as the one you had in the video after polishing. I was wondering if you had the part number for the Sonnax update as well as what the specs are for the clutch end plate clearances? I've been looking all over online for a manual and I am having difficulty. Do you have any suggestions on parts and any updates I need to apply at this time besides the converter charge. Thanks again for all that you do. Guys like you help move our industry forward.

Wow... i like that torque wrench, that's nice. This so far is one comprehensive video and i'm not even done watching it. You sure do explain everything, and you're easy to follow... subscribed. I'll return and finish this video until it's done, so much interesting information but just can't do it all at once for lack of time. Got high respect for you transmission rebuild guys, these things are complicated and takes lots of experience such as yourself.

Hiram, as you can see from our comments, you are a fantastic instructor/mechanic. As an engineer, I simply enjoyed the video for its educational value -- not looking to rebuild anything myself (though you made me want to). 10/10. Would recommend service at your shop if I knew which city you worked!!

well, i still dont get the origin of your response. i mean i rebuilt a baxa transmission for the first time watchin this video and it runs very well. i dont see anything dumb about it. just asked how to take off the end plugs in ways to not damage the valve body. it is not shown on the video. but if you guys make fun of questions like this, totally disapointing of you guys. especially when i give props for sharing the video. very very disappointing.

Did you do your own rebuild? If so do care to share how it went. I have a mind to do it myself using this video. I live in Guatemala and mechanics here suck ass! Even at the dealer! Glad this video exist as I would not have been able to complete the rebuild (for an Acura cl 1997) due to the pieces being similar. I overhauled and put my transmission together but it has an issue where I have to click the selector between 1 and 4 a few times to get it to engage. The car will eventually go into drive while doing this and it shifts fine afterward. Reverse does not work any more since rebuilding. When I put it into reverse, it seems to lock the wheels as it does not move. I can here the transmission engage into reverse. Also if the car is put into reverse or neutral while on a hill, the transmission locks up and will not move unless you shake the car in neutral to unlock it.

Love these honda auto transaxles - they're "simple in their complexity". Instead of having everything jammed onto 1 shaft & about a gazillion spring loaded checkballs & whatnot, you have multiple simpler shafts that you can rebuild 1 at a time after sorting out the valve-body, which is amazingly simple. Of course Hiram can dump it all in several piles & figure it all out. Guess when you've worked enough of em...

Awesome video man, i very much appreciate the amazing tutorial. HEADS UP to anyone that tries this, if you put the reverse collar on the wrong way you will have no reverse or 4th gear and it will make what sounds like a grinding noise in park, reverse and neutral. also if you have idle problems after you get it all back together you will need to replace your IACV and clean your throttle body to make it stop surging from 1200 to 1800 rpm. also buy a good quality rebuild kit with as many parts as you can. i cheaped out and mine came with the wrong steels in it.
