Just got every nut and bolt off of my 1984 xr250r and i must say it is very much the same to mine, im going to sandblast and paint the engine cases original black and start adding the rest of the stuff to my xr project!

Good work man. I guess doing a top end is pretty doable, it's just the stress. Worrying if you lost something. Stressed if it will ever run again. The cost. Cool to see you do all this.

You can do it! Just put all the parts in bins or bags and in the order that's easy for you to remember. I can send you a service manual pdf file and it will guide you step by step through this process with all the torque specs. I used Wiseco piston for my Xr250r and it was roughly $130 on eBay, then gasket set ( should include everything you need) $20, and finally some rtv silicone and you all set for parts as far as I remember. I don't know if your cylinder or head needs work, but any automotive machine/head shop can help you for a reasonable fee. I took my cylinder to a machine shop in Portland and the guy inspected it and deglazed it for free. You can lap the valves yourself and you can get a tool to get the springs off for around $25 on amazon + you will need lapping compound that shouldn't cost more than $10 at any auto store. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'm going to be finishing up this project in about a month, and you can see how I will do the top end and do the timing in the future. I had a Honda xl250 Elsinore and it seized up. Me and a friend took it apart had to split the case and there was a washer that got sucked in through the intake and got lodge between the crank and the case! :D It's good to get sucked, but not in this case. This sucked.

I am happy I found your video. I am working on a xr250r honda 1984 dirt bike right now . I have been looking for a video like yours to show me what to do to fix it. The motor I have will not kick over. It has been sitting for a long time. Not sure what is goings-on with it. The bike shops told me that the parts are hard to get is that true?

Some new OEM parts are getting scarce, but there’s always used parts on eBay. Bearings, gaskets, seals etc are easily available. Pistons too.

The answers to the question if the gear ratios are different I know that the 5th and 6th gears are overdrive gears for the highway 1st 2.769 : 1 2nd 1.941 : 1 3rd 1.45 : 1 4th 1.13 : 1 5th 0.923 : 1 6th 0.786 : 1 I'm told the 1986 XR250R is different. 1st 2.769:1 2nd 1.882:1 3rd 1.380:1 4th 1.083:1 5th 0.923:1 6th 0.814:1 I mean it's similar but you can definitely tell sixth gear is better for the highway on the 94XRL then again I don't know where I can find information on the 94 XR250R.

Have to say I did not expect catastrophic piston failure I can't believe that's basically my engine on my bike Hondas are bulletproof I have no idea what happened to this engine. maybe they forgot to do an oil change or two but by the time they did one it was probably was too late that's my hypothesis or somebody keep it pined Full Throttle for way too long.

If I had to guess, I would say it was an oil related failure, but I am no expert

Awesome video brotha I have a 92 xr250r that is smoking alot think i need new pitson rings and valves was watching the videos on your xr and you got it running good! Ps where did you get your valve seals/ gaskets?
