Hondo, Texas is the county seat of Medina County. The population of Hondo is about 8,000 people.
Hondo's slogan is God's country, and there is a sign that greets motorists entering the town that reads, "This is God's country, please don't drive through it like hell!"
Hondo is located only 40 miles from San Antonio, Texas and is a gateway to many great outdoor recreational activities in the area.
The area that would become Hondo was first inhabited by the Coahuiltecan people. Spaniards led by Cabeza de Vaca first explored the area in 1530s.
The City of Hondo was first settled in 1881 by waves of immigrants from Mexico, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, and Belgium. The cultural impact of settlement from Alsace-Lorraine is strongly apparent in nearby Castroville, Texas. Hondo was officially incorporated as a city in 1942.
In the 1920's Hondo was the location of two bank robberies by the infamous Newton Brother Gang. They are believed to be the most successful group of bank robbers in American history.
From 1942 to 1946 Hondo Army Air Field played an important role in training pilots for service.

Very beautiful but the poor maintanance of the city streets really jumps out. Every street in Hondo is being neglected. What a shame for being the county seat. It should be in the best shape.
