An in-depth conversation with someone who has obsessive compulsive disorder, also known as OCD.
We talk about how OCD originally manifested in her early teens, how it escalated to completely take over her life and how she eventually managed to get help and support and learn to take back control of her mental health.
Trigger warning - mention of suicide
OCD is often stereotyped as someone who is preoccupied with cleaning, however the reality of the disorder is much different and can manifest itself in many ways with the main symptoms being unpleasant and unwanted thoughts which cause distress and anxiety followed by compulsive behaviours and rituals in an attempt to ease the stress of the thoughts. Many people may experience OCD like symptoms at some point in their life, particularly after a traumatic event or at times of stress and is common with new parents. But for some people it is not a temporary condition and, if left untreated, can take over their life and can become very debilitating.
I hope to help raise awareness of the perhaps less known indications you or someone you know may be experiencing OCD and how early intervention could make all the difference.
