Reminder RE: the Hero’s Journey for all you writers out there: Luke Skywalker’s “refusal of the call,” for all that it’s held up as a good example, lasts for about two minutes of screentime. Refusal can be a good tool in the toolbox, but you shouldn’t have it dominate the story.

I, for one, found her hesitancy to be refreshing and relatable. I'm 100% a Star Wars fan, but time has made me realize that Rogue One is the only good SW movie.

@@TrumpIsTheRootOfAllEvil You just have to find the right balance point for it. Too quick and it's silly. Too long, and it becomes tedious. For a video game, having the character be reluctant for a couple hours of gameplay would work fine -- depending on what things are happening of course. You have to have the character get pulled into the story along with the audience, after all. If the CHARACTER doesn't care about anything that's happening, why should the audience?

For like half the game he doesn't want to be an assassin, he just wants to do his thing as a pirate, for money and glory instead of some creed, but as everything around him slowly crumbles into ruins he has a change of heart and accepts his role

I don't think the "refusal of the call" even long is a problem Forspoken's problem is the absolute zero development followed by 180° before the final battle and ending the story with another 180° The "refusal of the call" can be absolutely amazing narrative if you delve into it, how it actually affects the world and how even the hero starts to see the issue, you can make it even psychological with the hero being crippled by the fear and responsibility but either way you need to have a progression

Ratchet in the original Ratchet & Clank is actually a pretty good example of this. For the first third of the game, while he likes the idea of being a hero, he's more excited about finally being able to explore the galaxy. Second third, he's more concerned about getting payback against Captain Qwark than actually helping people. It's the final third where he realizes how selfish he's been and fully commits to stopping Chairman Drek. While Ratchet's characterization was a bit mishandled, I feel his story arc was really well done.

It just seems hard to care about a fantasy world when the character you play as wants nothing to do with it almost the entire way through and you have to play as them.

Yeah, you can tell they were trying to really shake things up by going with the anti social city girl in a medieval world but there is almost nothing there to root for. She is just a terrible character as a protagonist.
