Hey friends, here's our latest Honest Government Ad. This one was requested by our Patrons. A good topic suggestion, which could turn into a key issue at the coming federal election. I realise there's a wide range of opinions on this issue. I think that's partly because it's a genuinely messy situation. And partly because there's a lot of bullshit flying around *on all sides*. I didn't want to weigh in just to say "China bad!" or "China's done nothing wrong", which seem to be the two opposite extremes of those views. So I tried to provide a synthesis of some sort. I hope you get something out of this perspective. For me it's also been a welcome distraction from writing about climate shitfuckery as we head towards the COP26 climate summit in November. Writing about the Chagos Islands and Guam has reminded how much I miss making "Visit" HGAs. The last one was in 2018! (Visit West Papua). I look forward to making more after the election. I'll be back soon with the podcast companion to this HGA Till then, take care

It’s a shame you blindly repeated all the claims levelled against China to promote and manufacture consent for war. All of these claims are easily debunked but you still chose to portrait them as fact. This video did nothing to de-escalate current tensions. You need to consult some real China experts and should listening to news sources that quote ASPI. ASPI gets funding from the people that sell weapons to fight ASPI’s threats. Conflict of interest much?

except that this comedian is quite misinformed. take nuclear subs as an example, hm? quote "we cant fuel, maintain, or deploy nuclear subs" . nuclear subs dont need fuel very often, only every 15 years, and that gives the aussies 15 years to figure out how to maintain the reactor. other than that, deployment and maintenance is just about the same as a regular sub, just a couple different bells and whistles.

French here with some info that you guys might not have heard about the deal. What makes this funnier, is that if we speak purely about the subs deal, Naval Group with the french government offered Australia to build conventional diesel subs (which was a hard requirement for the Australians at the time, in part to avoid an arms race in the region and to be able to access waters restricted to nuclear subs, around New Zealand for example) by modifying an existing model, the "Barracuda" class, which originally was built to be a NUCLEAR powered sub. Apparently during the negotiation Naval Group made it clear, that they could also build a custom nuclear sub for Australia if they wanted to, which would have been cheaper to make and faster to build, since the modification wouldn't have been as heavy and they wouldn't have had to design an entirely new engine to begin with (the design of said engine was estimated to be ready for 2023), but Australia refused and went for conventional subs and to be fair the arguments for it were completely receivable, they made sense. In the "how" part of the deal, at least 60% was to be built in Australia, they got quite the rare and exclusive deal on technological transfer from France, since it was a total or near total transfer of technology, which ensures you are able to fully repair the entirety of your own fleet, without the partner's intervention, meaning you get to keep your armament sovereignty. Then the bad happened, prices ballooned to 90 Billions AUS dollars, there were delays, first sub expected to be on water by 2027, (which is a pain, but not uncommon at all, it's a world classic in big arms deal like this one)and Australians were shocked and quite pissed at the fact that french workers had 1 month of paid leave for summer regardless of the situation of the contract. (There's a mandatory minimum of 5 weeks per year of paid leave in France). However despite the quarrels, tensions and threats, progress was being made, issues were being resolved and trust in both parties was overall good. And suddenly out of nowhere from the french perspective the deal was off, french officials apparently first learned about it because it leaked on Twitter, which is no the best way to get informed that a multi-billion dollar contract was cancelled. Anyway, the new US sub deal is likely to cost more, a minimum of 100 Billions (expect that to climb, quite a bit higher), arrive later (first sub on water by 2040) and Australia will have to pay a fine because they broke the contract (for the Aussies reading, that's your tax-payer money). This was incomprehensible for the french because the main complaints Australians made about the deal was that it was taking too much time and it was getting too expensive, so shredding the deal to get one that will both cost more and arrive even later was a surprise to say the least. All of that for something the Aussie government and military originally didn't want but COULD have asked since the beginning. Obviously the subs themselves probably weren't the main reason for the cancellation, it's probably because Australia wanted to strengthen their ties with the world's first military power in case of a conflict with China and other Geo-political and economical reasons. I was wondering if you guys were going to make a video about this shitfuckery. Quality content resulting in quality laughs as always. And remember governments are governments, people are people. Cheers from France.

They pushed a little too far under Abbott and Hockey (Hockey was the treasurer, morbidly obese and had a phobia about windmills) and so there was a leadership spill which installed a moderate (in the form of Turnbull) as prime minister. Abbott continued in the parliament as a back bencher and trouble maker (that's his favourite activity, being a really negative shit stirrer) and, along with some of the others on the far right, like Dutton & Christiansen, forced a second leadership spill in which the fundy (Hillsong) Morrison ended up winning. @@madsam31 Likely the US Navy and certain private contractors will do the training; they have the operational and technical experience in nuclear sub ops and maintenance. The only other trainers I can see would be the RN and their contractors, for the same reasons. Once a sufficient number of trainers are trained, and gain experience, I can easily see future training becoming more and more 'Straya-based and provided. But there's a learning curve that has to be climbed before that time.People train all over the world if their home country lacks the ability or money to do it themselves. Sure there will be contracts; that's how it's done. I 'd love to see 'Straya be able to self-train and self-maintain (except for the nuclear refueling, which apparently 'Straya just never developed the infrastructure to do). Likewise your shipyards will need to learn how to maintain the subs, although some work might still have to be done in the US or UK depending on what it is and who supplied the equipment.

Their nuclear propulsion enables them to stay submerged for as long as they have food. Nuclear armed subs are strategic weapons. They act as a nuclear deterrent. I'm a historian - political and military. Quite a number of years studying to get a pretty expensive bit of paper. China's actions over the past decade paint a very obvious picture of a nation with aspirations of being a super power and expanding in the region. (Antagonizing neighbours, military build up and expansion in both conventional and nuclear arms, construction of foreign military bases, building support in developing nations through bribes etc) Just in the last 2 days alone they are flying jets into Taiwan's airspace to antagonize them. Historically, America has enjoyed such a disparity in military power that such things were irrelevant but that is no longer the case. Their military leadership is more concerned about the order of the colours in the rainbows on their cupcakes than in developing their military power. You know, the second I heard that AUKUS was going to be a thing I started wondering when we would see an Honest Government Ad about it. As for the video itself, it was fantastic.

So the UK just discovered that they couldn’t establish a Naval Base in the only British territory left in the Pacific, the Pitcairn Island. Much easier to take back possession of Australia in the name of the Queen who owns much of the land there anyway. If you behave nicely you may have the privilege of a Viceroy with full powers over the Commonwealth
@Dumpling1013 жыл бұрын
Ah the "we want something that someone else has, so we'll take it" argument. "Queen who owns much of the land"?, "Viceroy with full powers over Commonwealth"? ... bruh what fantasy world do you live in? None of that is true, like at all. Dude get help, you literally suggested "Hitler please expand our nation".

Expect Nuclear ships to be sailing into Australia ports within the next couple of years. The whole sub deal was about easy access for the US/UK fleets, we won't see any of our own for over 20 years. We'll be lucky to get hand-me down subs better than a Collin's class.

Plus holding munitions here and having more US military here. I wonder when we're going to get a couple of US bases to go with it? Sh*t, I'm aware my outlook is a bit naïve but can't we just live without this incessant doom of war being continually in the air? There are more ways to skin a cat. Anyway, if we don't fix climate change, who needs subs!

To be fair, the French contract started at 50 billion, but then the tag cost nearly doubled to 90 billion with delivery delayed beyond the 2026 deadline when the current subs would be retired. If I contracted a developer to build me a house and the same shit happened, I'd cancel the whole thing too. (Edit) OK so there were good reasons for the pricetag inflation (additional stuff tacked on later, mostly) also explaining some of the delay. And the nuclear subs will come out even later, so overall still a poor decision to change suppliers so far into the deal. Thanks for mentioning the plight of the Chagos.
@jetaddicted3 жыл бұрын
To be fair this was 100% Canberra’s fault. A nuclear powered Barracuda class (the French version then) costs around 1Bn US$, and the second in class, the SNA Duguay-Trouin, is about to leave the shipyard. Meaning Oz could have one sub almost ready by now but no, with the new plan, we’re talking 2040, at best. Prices rise when you ask for such stuff as changing the propulsion, or switching from the genuine equipment around which the sub was built, in favor of components made by the challengers… One would be interested in knowing what share of the price hike is caused by those foreign equipments. Nevertheless: Australia will have less subs, the talk is of 8 instead of 12, no one knows when but there is 0 chance it will be before the French one would have been, and, if, as mentionned, a Scorpene sells for a Billion, a Virginia class costs 3. Enjoy fighting with China under the encouragements of two countries that have no real assets near you. France has 1.5 million citizens living on French soil near Australia. But that good ole A glo tropism made it so that whatever thing French had to suck, that trust could only be with ‘murica and Alba. Well…so many have lost trust in Australia now, how can a country behaving the way it did expect the others to engage happily when they know that whatever contract, whatever deal, means absolutely nothing. If you guys so want to stay among Anglos, then stop asking for our support in front of China or for some trade deals with us. Go deal with London and DC.
@carthkaras64493 жыл бұрын
in fact it is wrong. The 90 billion story is when you count the American weaponry that the Australian government specifically wanted in these submarines. Also, a letter from the Australian government sent to Naval Group shows that the government was fully satisfied with the deadlines and the progress of the project a week before the termination of the contract. Also Naval Group, the French company is known to complete its projects well ahead of schedule.

@@KerbalFacile and there is more to it. The French contract have this particularity that a part of the submarines would have been build in australia by australian workers. The australian governement put its sovereignty in the bin. I hope the french didn't share their technology yet.
