We're about to have our next federal election here in Australia and like many of you, (or maybe not), I've been thinking a lot about what our government needs to learn from the outcome of the US election, if it wants to avoid Dutton winning and implementing Project Gina. I've also been thinking how fortunate we are to have preferential voting here in Australia - and how it makes our elections so fundamentally different (and better) to the USA's. And how much it would suck if Aussie voters fell in the trap of thinking they're forced to vote Red or Blue, like Americans are. So that's what this Honest Government Ad is about.

Indeed. PV might eliminate strategic voting, but it doesn't address the archaric inefficiencies of single-member districting. Imagine one sets of belief being held by barely 3 times as many people as a certain other set of beliefs. Do people of this belief then get 3 times as many seats to represent their belief in government? Nope, try *19* times as many seats instead. This is just one example, but it is what happens in _every_ country with single-member districts, _every_ single election, _even_ if they have removed strategic voting.
@wyldhowl2821Ай бұрын
Indeed, First Past The Post also does not prevent multi-parties, and hung parliaments. It does discourage more than two parties, but if you end up with parties that are very regional, it actually can amplify the fracturing of a country's politics, as certain parties always dominate certain areas. In Canada we get the same "stability" excuses, and they have long since fallen apart - yet the media still tries to sell us on two parties being the "natural" order, even though we've had more than two in Parliament for over 100 years now, and currently have 5. I cannot stress this enough: never let them roofie you into accepting any version of FIrst Past The Post, or just two parties.

@SirAdelaide well, not really. According to the Australia Institute, John Howard saw that the health insurance companies were not able to make money because of our free health system. So, he legislated subsidies to the public to encourage the take up of private health insurance and to financially penalise those who don't. So currently, that is to the tune of $7 billion dollars. What would that kind of money do for our public health system every year? I'd like to see private schools go under the same scrutiny. They are private entities, after all, and they are able to dictate who goes to their schools while receiving a disproportionate amount of public money compared to the public school system.

Preferential voting is definitely better than first-past-the-post but I wish we used preferential proportional representation systems like single transferable vote (STV) to elect more legislative bodies, including the House of Representatives. It would serve as an additional check and balance on power and likely mean that Labor would need to form a coalition with the Greens to govern just like they have in the ACT.
@TheTruePhoenixAUАй бұрын
Agreed, otherwise you often have large minorities sometimes completely unrepresented.
@adamlea6339Ай бұрын
In the UK we have FPTP and voting for a minority party makes it more likely one of the two primary will gain power, hence tactical voting which I really don't like but I'm forced to play the game by the rules.

Labor might have canceraids of lefty extremists infiltrating it and trying to war it as a skin suit, but liberals are openly goose stepping lunatics.

Unfortunately, it's just going to get worse. Because the world is in crisis, climate change, ocean acidification, over fishing, over population, running our of resources, an unsustainable economic system, social decay, etc, it's inevitable. Any attempt to fix any of that is going to lead to countries getting poorer because it costs money/resources, which are going to lead to people having less money and a lower living standard than they're used to, which will lead them to vote for populists making promises to reverse it, which will lead opportunists to seek power, which will lead to more and more chaos and decay. It's not just America, this sentiment is felt across the world, it'll just take longer in some places than others. But eventually everyone will want "strong" leaders simply because everyone will be terrified of the sky falling.

Yep, Aussies need to stop voting for major parties, which FORCES them to have to work harder in a hung parliament, for us, instead of the mega-giant companies and lobbyists. Don't know how many more election cycles we have to go through, but Aussies just can't seem to make the connection between what we experience daily versus voting for NEITHER party in the following election.
@DraxynnicАй бұрын
Often it does come down to "the major party you place higher is what really matters", but if there are minors or independents that are better aligned with your values, might as well put them higher in the list. At worst, it'll filter down to whatever you considered the best (or least bad) of the major parties, and maybe if enough people in your electorate feel the same way you'll get that more aligned candidate. In the US, one would have to play the game of "a vote that isn't for the least bad candidate is a vote for the worse candidate by default". Here, we don't.
@McMavTVАй бұрын
I get your point, mate. Though not at federal level just yet, but it's becoming evident in local elections, that other parties and even Independents are starting to rise from the ground and taking hold of either Liberal or Labor dominated electorates. Here in Western Sydney, the Fowler electorate, which was once dominated by Labor, is now held by an Independent MP. Fairfield City Council, also once dominated by Labor, is now run by a new Minor Party which had only formed last year, the current Mayor runs this Minor Party (who was once part of the Labor Party) and with him is also the Independent MP who used to be part of the Liberal Party, so these two have joined forces to form a new Minor Party that focuses on Western Sydney itself. "Western Sydney Community Party" is the name of this new Minor Party in town. But even on this level, it is clear that one day these non-Major Political Parties will dominate and penetrate into the system, in the future. There is frustration with the two Major parties, so people are starting to scramble to find alternative parties.

We in Belgium have more parties that I can count, which makes the formation of a government usually complicated. But the upside is that the parties forming a coalition have to moderate their own program and that leads to balanced and moderate governing, respecting (or trying to respect ) the aspiration of the majority of voters.
