It was interesting hearing the rav's description of Monsey today as compared to 20 years ago. I am from Los Angeles and was there once in 1993 with some friends who went to pay a shiva visit. I remember the place seeming kind of dumpy. Almost rural and spread out, but old run-down houses, and very charedi. Sort of like an Americanized Bnei Brak.
