Funnily enough, I took my driving test in a Corolla. Nissan being /the/ JDM legend is true though. It's really telling that a lot of Japanese manufacturers went in too deep during the bubble economy, but Nissan was like the only one that actually almost died from it - it's because they were building about half of all JDM wet dream material to ever be released.

Can testify personally, I was about to pull the trigger on a Frontier because they had a model that was $13K less expensive than the Tacoma I was interested in. Both were brand new. I wanted a truck with a manual transmission. Frontier had a single cab, 2wd, 4cylinder hand crank window Frontier for sale brand new at $22K, that technically offered a manual transmission, but the dealer said it's going to be a long wait getting one. Went with the Tacoma TRD sport.
