HONEST REACTION to IU - With A Determined Heart To Forget You

So IU has this album series called “A Flower Bookmark” which are only covers / remakes of old korean songs (you have actually reacted to some songs like Sleepless Rainy Night or My Old Story). She released the first one in 2014 and the second one in 2017. “With The Determined Heart To Forget You” is a song by Kim Kwang-Seok, a very popular singer in the 90s in Korea, however a few years into his career he supposedly commited su****e. IU really likes Kim Kwang-Seok so she wanted to release this song as the TT of A Flower Bookmark 2 (2017), but a few weeks before she could do it, a movie came out with some new information about the death of Kim Kwang-Seok (it suggested that his wife had something to do with it, also she had lied saying that Kim Kwang-Seok's daughter was dead but was actually living in the US) and it became a big scandal. So to avoid any controversy/backlash IU cutted the song from the album and released “Autumn Morning” instead. It was so sudden that she didn’t even had time to record a MV for it. The fans asked her to release the MV for “With A Determined Heart to Forget You” and she did 6 months later. That's why this song is less known and is harder to find it if you’re an international fan.

This is all a distinction without a difference. A cover of a song is nothing more than a new recording or performance of that song by someone other than the orginal artist. A remake or reinterpretation are simply subgroups of a cover. If the artist is trying to reproduce the song has the orginal artist performed it or the artist has added new twist or musical style to the song(s) they are ALL COVERS. If an artist says or States or the album cover says the cover songs contained on the albums are remakes than the buyer knows exactly what to expect of the songs. The music, melodies and lyrics will be performed to match the orginal version as best as the artist can. If it says they are reinterpretation of the originals then the songs could and likely will sound anywhere to from different to unrecognizable from the original. But in either case they both are covers of the songs. Here is a definition from a music production and teaching website -A cover song is a new recording or performance of a song by an artist other than the original composer or performer(s). A cover song is colloquially known as a cover version or cover.

I have to break this to you tho.. This is not her song originally. It's a remake. This song should be the title track for her remake album A Flower Bookmark 2. But, few days before the release, there's an unpleasant news about the family of the original singer, Kim Kwang-seok. IU didn't want people to have mixed feelings when they listen to the song. So she decided to take the song out from the album and release it someday when listeners can enjoy the song without feeling hurt or unpleasant about what happened with the original singer's family. She scrapped thousands of finished DVDs, and produced them again. Decided new title track for the album and all. It's very unfortunate really. But, I'm glad now people can enjoy the song without any of that unpleasant feelings. Just enjoy her voice, the music, and the incredible MV 😌

With A Determined Heart to Forget You was supposed to be the title track for A Flower Bookmark 2. However, IU removed it last minute because, at that time, there was some news going on about Kim Kwangseok's daughter's death. IU is a big fan so out of respect, she did what she had to do. All the AFBM2 physical albums were reprinted (is this the right word?) without the song, making Sleepless Rainy Night the title track. It was stressful. A few months later, she released this MV as tribute to the original singer. I'm not sure if it was officially confirmed by IU herself that this MV and Through the Night MV are interconnected, but they seem that they are hehe.

there's so much context here to be explained , Aaron :) 1.this is a remake song (originally as title track of AFB 2), that's why the song's structure and the feel are different. Also ofc the song is not written by IU. 2.this connected to Through The Night (MV - wise and lyrics wise) this is the last sentence of "With Determined Heart ..." : On my illuminated window, I write and erase "I love you" and the first sentence of Through The Night : Tonight, I'll send you the firefly from that day to your window. That means "I love you." 3.there's a whole reason, a sad reason why she didnt include this in A Flower Bookmark 2, some friends already write abt this. For that reason alone, and the fact that she later releases this MV ... FOR FREE, thats alone already super admirable. She can made hundred millions wons with this as digital single, but no. but thank you ...

This song was written and performed by legendary korean Folk singer Kim Kwang Seok who died in 1996. He recorded this song in 1992. This MV is a tribute video by IU and was intended to be released on her Pallet album (correction the album was Flower Bookmark not Pallet). However, also in 2017 there were new allegations raised that his wife had something to do with his death, which had been ruled a suicide. Also information was made public about the death of his 17 year old daughter in 2007. Police did reopen that case. But due to all the controversy this song was not included on the album. And as a result the MV that was made as part of that release became an "unofficial " release. This song is not a continuation of Through the night. This song was written by Kim Kwang Seok and recorded in 1992, IU was born in 1993. So was this song a inspiration for IU when she wrote Through the Night, well she has certainly indicated that, thereby creating a "connection" between these two songs. But that does not mean they are directly related or one is a continuation of the other. But rather one influenced or inspired the other, but are based on the individual experiences or emotions or creative viewpoint of each of the individual song writers.

it's a actually a cover song! the original writer and singer is a folk singer named kim kwang seok. but iu's always named him as one of her writing and composing inspirations, so it makes sense that the imagery coming to the fore of her music very much reflects a lot of kim kwang seok's work, too, apart from her own personal experiences.
