Here's the interesting thing, in the original book the people were all not attractive offline: Artemis had a much darker and larger birthmark, H was overweight (and also lesbian but that's another story), and Wade is a nerdy kid. The point was that when they all met in real life, they accepted each other for who they were because of their online avatars. The movie lost this important meaning entirely.

Set in 2045.... In that world, pop culture stoped creating new things in 2010 so that in 2018, people watching the movie would catch all the references to the 80's and 90's.

It was outright called out in the book. The Oasis creator hated everything pop culture that wasn't from "his generation" (to the point that he'd in-universe throw a tantrum and fire employees who told him they didn't like something he liked.) And since the Oasis generation was obsessed with "his vision" and getting the keys, they basically threw out anything cultural that wasn't built on the 80's/90's (or, 80's to 2010's in the movie, I guess.) There was literally a generation of people that had to watch as their kids and grandkids became obsessed with a bunch of old ass cultural throwbacks.

The WORST part of this movie, wasn't the plot-holes, or the characters, or even the generic plot itself. The worst part was how it took itself WAY too seriously. There wasn't a single scene where someone falls over after trying to lean on a chair that isn't really there. If there was something crazy happening in the game, it never cut back to IRL to see how stupid they look. Everyone's (even background people) avatar looked too cool, there weren't any crappy/terrifying designs of people who hit the randomize button for the hell of it, or any repeating meme characters (you know of at least one I'm talking about). Hell he was even playing the game while in the middle of a car chase irl and we never actually saw his character getting randomly flung around. VR is a gold mine for comedy, and they had none of it. Honestly the only part I liked was The Shining scenes, because it reminded me of all the LPers who play VR horror. Making it relatable and funny. This movie didn't have SAO level of VR, it was just a highly upgraded VR we already have, so it should have at least SOME of the hilarious flaws.

I remember there was at least one scene where someone fell over in the real world. It was a mother whose son told her that something was burning in the kitchen, but she told him to call his dad instead, and then she fell from a sofa. I also remember during the final battle, it occasionally cut back to the real world. One scene showed the players awkwardly running on the street while other people just looked at them. And the car chase did affect the character in game. He fell when trying to get the last key, and couldn't put the key in the hole because he was wobbling around. But I agree that it would be better if there were avatars with randomized designs, and it would've been funny to see repeating meme characters.

I unironically love Ready Player One, but I gotta admit, it is the most unoriginal piece of entertainement ever made. A movie based on a book based on everything that is popular. It lives on nostalgia alone.

Marcus Walker one of the main characters is a famous twitch streamer and let's player, so she used the Goro costume to disguise herself around the public, and used the chestburster just to mess with another main character who didn't know it was her

Marcus Walker you can actually see that in Mortal Kombat X itself. If you're playing as Alien against Goro and you win without doing a fatality/brutality, the mini-cutscene shows an Alien bursting outta your opponent. But seeing that in the film was indeed pretty cool.

The only scene I liked was the first challenge. Like, I mean I consider myself a nerd and a gamer, and I love watching movies, but Ready Player One left a bad taste in my mouth. Like, what are the rules in this world? Why didn't the police show up sooner, like when his aunt was murdered? Can VR players see through their visors to the real world to avoid obstacles, like the people playing as Halo Spartans? If not, isn't that dangerous? Like they were right next to the street... And why do players react to items being heavy if it's all digital? I was hoping for something like The Matrix, Avatar, or maybe even Surrogates, where the players don't have to move their physical bodies in order to move their avatars/digital bodies. Maybe I'm just being picky. Would it have been a more enjoyable experience if I had read the source material? Also, I can't help but feel like Steven Spielberg didn't really understand how VR works...

Melanie; the book is NOT better RPO is about visualization...a cyberspace world, everything is visual...LOOK at this, LOOK at that, LOOK at how characters are based off game characters, you can't base a book off that...it is impossible and would make a poor book...that is exactly why they turned it into a film...because far more people are visual than readers these days. (I read and watch films) but it is a solid fact that if you handed over a book and a film the average person would toss the book and watch the movie.

The birthmark thing is supposed to by her making a big deal out of nothing. She hid behind an online persona who was "perfect" instead of going outside and realizing that no one would care about her birthmark. That's the point it's trying to make.
