No question from me, I just wanted to say thank you to both of the Honest Guides who are a HUGE reason why I became such a passionate learner of all things Czech. Over the 7 years you two have been making videos, I must have seen them all! They are what kept me motivated when I decided to study Czech as my foreign language of choice in University. Ever since I was a little kid and my Czech grandma would tell me stories of her home and it's always been my dream to go to the Czech Republic. Hopefully some day, I will be able to so I can use all of this Honest Knowledge! Much love from Nebraska, An Honest Fan

Yes, exactly! If you fancy this stuff - there is a well-stocked online shop with different transport memorabilia, a historical tram that takes you to the pub inside of a tram, as well as a restaurant that delivers food and drinks by train. For the full experience you can reach Prague by rail - it takes a long time from Poland, but it is a nice experience.

Regarding obtaining cash, I was a French student on a 3 month internship in Prague and as long as I sticked to ATMs from big banks (Raiffeisen, ČSOB, KB, etc.) the rate seemed very decent with my French debit card. And at least the machine was upfront about all fees, rate and whatever bits of money that I would lose during the withdrawal.
@MarvinCZ
@MarvinCZ 9 ай бұрын
The biggest issue with these bank ATMs is to carefully pick how much you want to withdraw. They often offer crazy amounts for foreign cards, starting at hundreds of euros and going up. There's always an option to pick your own amount, use it.
@Pidalin
@Pidalin 9 ай бұрын
This is what I always recommend - to find ATM of some local bank, not using those ATMs called just an "ATM" which are there just for stupid tourists and when I visited Portugal in 2019, my Czech card didn't work with those Euronet worldwide ATMs which I still don't know why, it's clear that these ATMs are meant for American tourists.

So far out of all the European capitals I've been to, Prague remains my favorite. Really reasonable prices, great local food (especially for the cold weather) and really cheap beer. You could find amazing tap beer literally everywhere! Your guides were also a lifesaver. The fair currency-exchange list is amazing, as well as some local restaurant recommendations. And the restaurants I loved the most, were the ones names "Lokál". There were a few restaurant locations around the city that seemed to be a "chain" and every day they had a new menu with really tasty and relatively cheap food! I can't wait to visit Prague again in the near future to hopefully discover more of the city and more amazing dishes! P.S. One weird thing that I noticed is that youtube seems to have unsubscribed me from the channel. I have been a subscriber for many years and today I noticed that the subscribe button said "Subscribe" instead of "Subscribed" with the little bell that it's usually like. Not sure if it was a visual bug or youtube really did unsubscribe me.

My wife & I love Praque. It is a must stop on every European trip from the USA. Praque has the best food in Europe and the best food in Prague is at the Kantýna. We do take the express bus from the Airport because it is the simplest way to get to the main train station (least stress). Within the city we walk, taking the transit only to outlying castles & cathedrals. We always take in a classical music concert in Prague.

Just back from Prague. First of all, thanks for all of your videos, I'm following you since years and even watched all the videos that are no longer available (loved the food tours and found some good places in them). Regarding cash: I draw money form KB (Komerční banka) ATMs, they didn't take any fees (if you decline the conversion) for that (thank you KB). One place that once was shown in your video was Naše maso in Dlouha Road which is a butcher that serves awesome burger and especially the Pastrami Sandwich is great. One of my favorite fine dining restaurants is Blue Wagon which is in Vinorhady and deserves much more attantion than it has. We had the cheapest beer in Restaurace U Mlynáře between Charles Bridge and the Castle (about 1€) and they also serve good food (I had a not perfect Svickova but ll the others were pretty good for the price) especially considering that place in town where it is more likely to hit a tourist trap. All in all, coming back since more than 20 years now and thank you Honza and Janek (the guy behind the camera first :-)) for all the time we had together and I will be back soon. Cheers and love to all the nice people we met in Czech Republic over all.

Also Jen from "Dream Prague". Thanks to you both for the warning against the jedelniks! There were things I wish I'd watched this video for before hand, but we mostly got it down. Thanks tons. You Prague-ites are SO LUCKY to live there! Everyone we saw on the trams from our lodgings on the #3 and #17 lines (didn't get a chance to use the Metro, darnit) was beautiful and well put together. Of course I notice the women the most, but everyone seemed to have their lives well in hand. We stayed at Botel Racek, with small rooms, but really nice and quiet, right on the river. Lovely staff. Now we are at Pension Gardena in Česky Krumlov in a beautiful room with a garden courtyard right outside our door, and a view of the castle! So cool. Another fairy-tale town. A lot of Czechs, however, travel to Dresden (either by car, which is 90 minutes, or by train, which is around 100 minutes) in Germany, where you can find truly outstanding Winter markets! Regarding winter activities, Czech does not have high mountains like the Alps, but skiing is very popular. I would recommend Klínovec, Špindlerův Mlýn or Černá Hora. If skiing is not your thing, doing the same activities you do in the summer is also fine. Sightseeing, going out to the nature and so on is still very magical during the winter, that is if you are lucky enough to have snow when you arrive.

My favourites are actually those at castles. A lot of Czech castles (almost every) have a christmas markets either in front of them or in the castle inner "square". I would recommend those at Křivoklát castle, that is not too far away from Prague. Then there is the famous Karlštejn obviously, probably the most iconic Czech castle. So check some of those.

If you are interested in authentic local Christmas markets, come to Brno for it, city center is small and you can easily walk from one Christmas market to another, each one is a little bit different.

I wish they would ban the scooters for rent, which are all over streets, but I don't want them to ban privately owned scooters. I still use one once in a while, instead of using my car. Besides that, there are new bikes for rent, which can't just be dumped anywhere, but needs to be parked in designated areas, or else they will force you to pay extra. Just need them in more areas of the city.

@@Kim-J312 are you crazy? People are not very considerate in cars here. There are some bike lanes, but they are full of pot holes. And sometimes the bike lane just dissappear in the middle of lanes where cars are merging. I have my own scooter and go on the sidewalk, if they are wide enough and dont have cobble stone. And I usually don't drive faster than a person can run. I step off if there's too many people and respect the pedestrians. When Prague gets proper bike lanes, I'll use them, like in Denmark or Netherlands.

It's sad because it was supposed to be nice way how to move around, but it ended just as overpriced tourist attraction and nobody normal really uses it for moving around, it's just for fun. I tried these scooters and it's very unstable and most of them are locked to 20 km/h max, so I don't feel good with that on road because I am too slow, that's why people move on sidewalks with that. It it was at least 25 or 30, it would be completely ok on road, but it's still not really stable, you have to always hold it with both hands.....it's much better to use some e-bike.
@Pidalin
@Pidalin 9 ай бұрын
@@simonp37 I agree that driving it on a sidewalk is lesser evil than driving it on a road, it's not ideal, but you really don't feel safe with that on road, but if you are not stupid or drunken, you can use it safely on sidewalk in places where it's possible, in some places it's not possible, in some yes, I think that banning generally dringing on sidewalks is not good solution because there are places where you have 10m wide empty sidewalk and drive some 20 km/h scooter on road is totaly stupid in such place. But in center of Prague, using some scooters doesn't make much sense anyway, most of people just walk to some tram or metro, riding there on such stupid thing would be too complicated and stresfull and also car drivers can be very agressive and hate you if you are not also in car and they will try to kill you, people who are that crazy to drive in center of Prague are mostly psychopats who will not make single step without car and try to block them with some 20 km/h thing, they will just go over you and another driver will kick you to some hole next to road instead of calling an ambulance, I am not kidding, they will do that.

I hope you guys tackle a Prague guide during the Christmas season. There are other “guides” who say that everything is closed on Christmas day in Prague while others say it’s a festive day. I’ve seen a lot of conflicting sources that’s why The Honest Guide is my ultimate source of truth when it comes to everything Prague.
@MarvinCZ
@MarvinCZ 9 ай бұрын
The conflicting information might stem from the fact that Czech Christmas happens on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day. So everything is in full swing up to Christmas Eve and it's simmering down on Christmas Day and after. Also note that by law many shops (all big ones) must close at noon on Christmas Eve and stay closed for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
@Veenacz
@Veenacz 8 ай бұрын
The whole month leading to christmas day is festive, especially sundays. Those are full of food and drink stands at the big squares. Christmas day (24th) is more like "hey if you forgot to buy something, you've got time until noon". Like Marvin said, everything closes at 12:00 on 24th and you're supposed to go back to your family and spend the rest of the day with them. The next day we usually visit our parents on 25th and on 26th we visit others (aunties, cousins, best friends ...). Then we go back to work on 27th, but not 100%, we already start making plans for new year's.

I experienced something I did not under stand last year at holiday season. I knew shops were closed from noon the 23rd till the 26th or 27th. So, I arrived early at the kaufland. When I tried to check out the guy behind me started yelling at the cashier not to accept my money. Not that I was paying with a large bill, 300kc for a 260 kc total. Do they not accept cash on the last day of shopping?? I ended up leaving my purchase there and walking out.

I was in Czechia last autumn and just got a small amount of cash from an ATM (I had previously exchanged some CZK in Revolut). There were only two instances where I had to use cash: public transport in Olomouc (the ticket machines at the train station accept card payments, but most throughout the city don’t), and public toilets (the ones that are watched over by an elderly lady). This is actually true for most European countries I’ve visited recently (even Germany, which used to have a very bad reputation regarding card payment availability).

One thing that should be mentioned about the currency - the rate changed quite a lot recently. I've already encountered several tourists who were desperately trying to find an exchange office which would give them 25 or 26 CZK for 1 euro 😄 These days you'll only get around 23.50 CZK for 1 euro. If someone offers you more than 24, then it's 100% a scam. Anyways it's always better to check the bank rate before exchanging.
