My analysis on the lyrics (disregarding the visuals): The beginning verse sets up the expectation that Teto has been faking (whatever that could mean) in a relationship with someone, causing her partner to break up w her. Despite her dishonesty, she still misses them and wishes that she did better. This becomes a lifelong regret (The sound of your voice clings to my brain/ my failures are on display/ I’m taking this all the way to my grave). The chorus is a declaration that the breakup doesn’t phase her (honestly, I don’t know if I’ll ever change) and that she could care less what her ex thought of their time together, because clearly teto doesn’t think that their relationship was that important (honestly, I don’t care if you never say that all that we did meant nothing to you at all). Despite her repetitiveness of “honestly,” should we really take her word for what she feels? The 2nd verse is short, but it serves to reinforce the notion set by the chorus that their breakup doesn’t affect her at all (right now, I’m doing just as good as before), claiming that she doesn’t even think about them anymore. She says that since she’s “free” from her partner, she can finally do what she wants now. (I do whatever I want/ I don’t let you in my head). Though, that in itself is paradoxical. The chorus repeats, teto cementing the idea that she’s fine after her partner left. Though, at first the music is softer and quiet, almost as if she’s wavering in her conviction of the verity of that statement. Then the instrumentals start to build up as the chorus continues. She’s reaching a boiling point until the big breakdown where the chorus repeats one more time. Teto’s voice is broken down into segments as she tries one more time to affirm that she’s really alright that her ex left her, but it’s not as convincing now. The mask shatters the moment she admits that she wasn’t being honest (honestly, I don’t even know if I’ll ever say that none of this was true/ I’m not being honest at all). The long note right after can be interpreted as a desperate or frustrated scream. The refrain hits you like a truck as it’s jsut a repeat of the first few lines of the beginning. We learn who she’s truly singing to: herself. Teto herself has been faking this independence to herself to hide the fact that she’s hurting from this breakup. It’s foreshadowed throughout the entire song that she wants to be with them again. This even seemed like a song dedicated to her ex.
