I will forever love Benson's performance she gave the best performance for my favorite character. For that she is always going to be my favorite. However Halle brought such a new life to the song. Morrisettes was the best for me. I think whats really great about the climax is the dynamic change and the fact it's not a full on belt, it gives a delicacy to it that is incredibly impactful. Only a couple got that right imo which does just go to show that it's not always the big showy vocals that are the hardest.

Halle is singing like I need to join you in your world. The depths from her soul wanting to be out of that water. Makes you feel it. And give you chills. Everyone’s rendition is special in its own way. Halles stood out more for me and was my favorite. This reminded me of the national anthem. This is a classic example of belting not always being the best option for a song. So many commenters lack the fundamental understanding of the original. It’s not meant to be an extravagant performance; it’s an intimate monologue. The context behind the song is super important - I highly recommend people watch the recording process for the original movie and what Howard Ashman wanted. This isn’t a dig at any of the other performers, either. Different artistic mediums will have different requirements to sound “right” and also not be silly. You couldn’t expect the broadway version to be so quiet and subdued, and they (rightfully) took the song in a more modern direction with the live action version. From what I’ve heard so far, Halle’s version is beautiful. This isn’t a critique of her performance, so don’t @ me. She’s definitely my Ariel, too. I’m just really tired of people trying to downplay Jodi’s version. So much thought went behind it, and it’s the way that the original writer of the song (Howard) wanted it to be sung.

To me Jodi Benson is Ariel, she did say that she wanted to belt the song so much and founded frustrating at times, because both the Director and Producer where in the recording studio with her and guided her on how to deliver the song and how they wanted it to sound, it's was also the first time time for her to record in a studio and she was nervous, they even dimmed the lights so she could get the feeling of being in the grotto and to make it more comfortable for her to embody Ariel, Halle is a beautiful talented woman she took the song and made it her own which is fair enough, and gives it a different feeling.

Jodi, always. The OG version is beautiful, and I honestly don't love the moving into higher notes just to impress. Jodi wanted to belt it and give more, but Howard Ashman's vision (TLM genius) was for it to be softer, for the character. And I like it that way.

Nick Pitera went viral on the early days of KZbin for his cover of this song. His control and technique for singing so high in his vocal range really impressive. And if you close your eyes, and just listen, it’s sang so high you fully expect it to be a female singer. I’m still fascinated how he can manage to create different vocal qualities that make it sound like he is belting or switching register, when he already is that high in his vocal register. It’s a absolutely wonderful version of the song in and of itself. And that is sang by a male singer doin all that at the top of his register, just is the icing on the cake.

@@frenz_vergz I’m a Halle Bailey fan since but Not sure if this is a good fit for her tho. Her voice is quite nasal on some parts and not well open. Yes she did good on being her own but this supposed to be sung like the original. Not being overrun by too much runs if you know what I’m talking about. Dynamics/ diction is the key to sing this song perfectly and Morissette did a great Job in that department. And talk about her voice, it’s very emotional. Yes she hits with high notes, no doubt about that, but to incorporate high intensity emotions in the song is hard to achieve. She is a story teller and understands what she’s singing.
