Our bees in Dominica fight the mites on their own, when the mites came to the island the beekeepers could not afford to treat plus the large concentration of wild hives made for a perfect situation of natural selection. I was told that there was a huge population crash and now we only have stock that manage mites on their own.

I wonder if the genes are different.

I'm curious to know how many Queens are left carrying mites around in the hive without the worker removing them with grooming. And how many have bites that affect their laying quantities of brood. So many question that could explain why bees are not doing well. I know I usually think that it's the worker that carry the mite but I'm sure queens also are drained of their blood too. Mite aren't always just walking around looking to reproduce. Thanks as always.

Dr. Bee as always thanks for the vedio's but also the content style. I believe strongly in the habits of the wild. The insulation of hives is an attempt to replicate the coziness of a tree cavity. With the natural hydration of the wild colony in mind. Not venting allows them to control their atmosphere as they would in the wild. And allowing them their seclusion as much as possible. Blending this natural style with profitable outcomes is my challange. But I belive the answer will be found from ever changing genetics within ferrel bees. Or bees managed in a manner trying to mimic them. I suspect the genetic line already exist somewhere in the wild of verro killing colonies.

Here in Florida we use Oxcylic acid. I tend to mix a couple of table spoons in with sugar water 1/1 and soak it into a paper towel. Lay it on top of the hive above the brood and walk away. The bees tear up the paper towel spreading the acid through the hive. Others use a vaporizer but that seems a bit intense to me. Plus I don't have a commercial bee keeping business. Supposedly it is also allowed when the honey flow is on as well. But Europe and china have had these little critters for years so what are they doing our bees aren't?

Not such good news for the Australian ecosystem. The one upside to the Varroa mites being in Australia is the fact that they'll effect the feral Honey Bees, and hopefully kill the feral hives, which is good news for our whole ecosystem, including our native bees and other native animals. Let's hope these resistant bees don't get here too soon.
