One thing that they don’t really touch on that well in the episode but was expressed by the creator in a Q and A is that the town has a “finders keepers” law which means if you possess a physical legal document for a property, then you legally own that property.

A journal entry leads to a height-altering crystal. A battle over the magic flashlight leads to capture by Gideon, who plans to downsize Stan.
