Honey Purity Test - DIY | September 2020

The market is filled with honey promising you that they are the best quality. But how can you be sure that what they claim is true?
Here are four simple tests that you can perform at home to identify if your honey is pure or adulterated -
1. Water Dissolving Test: Fill a glass with water and add a teaspoon of honey into the glass. Adulterated or impure honey will readily dissolve in water. On the other hand, pure honey will settle right at the bottom of the glass.
2. The Flame Test: Start by taking a tissue paper and roll it. Dip the tip of the tissue with honey. Light it and see if it lights up. Pure honey is flammable. But if the honey is impure, it will not light up as it contains moisture.
3. The Blot test: A test to see if the honey is diluted with water using a blotting or tissue paper. Put a few drops of honey on a paper. It may be absorbed or leave a wet mark on the paper. Both pure and impure honey will not be absorbed, but adulterated honey will leave a wet mark.
4. The Thumb Test: Put a small drop of the honey on your thumb. Check if it spills or spread around on your thumb. If it spreads then the honey is impure since pure honey will stay intact on your thumb.

These tests are only meant for viscosity not exactly for purity. Even Adulterated honey will absolutely pass all these tests if it's viscosity is high or thick on the other hand Pure honey will fail if it gets to absorbs moisture from the humid weather and got thin. Pure honey doesn't mean only thick and high viscose liquid but also means free from heavy metals, insecticide, pesticides, contaminants from dirty hands, utensils, materials while handling, extracting, storing and packaging... @@ew_323 That's not true, either. All honey crystallizes after some time, and how fast honey crystallizes depends on how it's stored, the amount of pollen it contains, and the glucose:fructose ratio.

Most accurate test to mix it with same ml of water, honey and Grapes Vinegar and shake it well, if it is not pure the vinegar will react with artificial sugar and will produce the thick layer of bubbles foam, if it is pure then the layer will be very thin and will only appear in edges.

You should have kept two bottles, one adulterated and one pure, then the difference will be there for people to see. This is the correct way of distinguishing between the two.

This is not always true this method. It’s depend if the honey is not as mature, and he was collected when the frame is not completely closed by the bees . If there is humidity even in the real honey, you are going to see all of this that you see in the falls honey, this is not very accurate, unfortunately. The best is the laboratory test to be sure 100%.

1. Too many beekeepers feed their bees sugar, which the bees store in there Combs like honey. I’m not sure that it can be detected. I’m convinced I can taste it: I bought a commercial box of bees that came with some honeycomb, and tasted that “honey“: it Just didn’t taste like any honey I’ve ever had. In fact it didn’t taste like anything but sugar to me. 2. However, taste alone is not a good indicator, because honey from different flower’s nectar can taste dramatically different.

My Dad knew an Archaeologist who ate honey that had been sealed in a burial chamber in Egypt. The tomb contained mummy, treasures, & honey. Of course it was "candied" rock hard. They put vessel containing honey it hot water and melted it down. They no are it on biscuits for breakfast the next morning. True story and amazing huh?

Even easier method. Just smear the honey onto your arms and face, then take a walk past a bee-hive. If you hear the bees laughing, then the honey is fake. If the bees attack, then you have a real thing. Just don't run towards me with your stinging entourage 😂😂😂😂😂😂

This is simply thickness test not purity test. The right way to test it is to mix same amount of water and honey with few drops of grapes vinegar if it produces large amount of foam it is not pure if the amount of foam is near to none it is pure

It's only the test of viscosity nothing else. Pure honey which comes from Northeast and other wet parts of India will be always thin whereas honey coming from dry areas (Rajasthan) will be more thicker. Thin honey doesn't mean the honey is adulterated. Most of the adulterated honey sold in India is on the thicker side.

It's a myth..scooping the honey with metal only take a few seconds that it won't have the sufficient time for the metal to be corrosice & destroy the honey.. storing a metal spoon inside the honey for a long period of time will destroy it though :)

The sad part is that the Chinese figured out a way to make a rice syrup that they can add to increase volume and doesn't add extra water or any contaminants that come up on the iodine test. It is so sophisticated that pollination tests done in a lab can't even detect it. This allows them to sell their honey much cheaper and have more of it. It also make business difficult for American bee keepers. The US tried putting tariffs on the Chinese honey in the early 2000s but they just sent it to other countries who then sent it here. After that it got alot more complicated. Best thing you can do is avoid buying honey made outside the US. Yes you will pay a bit more but at least you know you are getting a pure product.

@@Zizira Yeah that is great to here. I did hear that India is one of the few reliable countries out there that doesn't push out Chinese product. We have suppliers here that buy from all over and then blend many different types of honey in bulk to sell to food companies that use it as an ingredient in their products. Most of them will not buy from China or any of the countries that buy from China and re sell. India appears to be a major supplier to these places as it is a trusted product. They need Honey that comes from the Vietnam reigon but it's hard as they do alot of business with China.

Hate to bare bad news but these are simply hydration issues. Something certain types of honeys can suffer from due to heat and humidity in the hives during certain times of year. The bees can't evaporate the excess nectar from the cells and turn it into honey keeping it loose and runny. No matter what product, for every test designed to test purity, there will be a dishonest person attempting to develop a way to cheat the system. Honey bees cap honey at 18% humidity normally, but the beekeeper may have harvested early. There are so many reasons why honey would be runny, but this test doesn't prove honey is or isn't pure. It only shows hydration level.
