Күн бұрын

Hello everyone! Please excuse my absence of late, we have had two birthdays to celebrate this past week, and the whole family has been down with a cold for quite some time. Truly the larger the family, the longer it takes for everyone to both get sick and recover. Not the best way to kick off summer, thats for sure. The roses are really coming into their own this year, particularly my roses that are in their third and especially fourth year. They fill me with joy and wonder, and I think I can finally bravely pick a large bouquet this year, and not feel too guilty. As a side note, I realized I said "glorious!" about 1,200 times in this video which gave me a good laugh at myself because I'm obviously still a bit tired from this cold and lacking in imaginative adjectives. Thank you so much for joining me in the garden! Until next time. x Samantha

I believe this is the prettiest garden I have ever seen!! It is STUNNING! I adore foxglove and have never had them self seed! I have planted many of them! I have some David Austin roses and some Eden and New Dawn and I LOVE THEM! I planted a Queen of Sweden this year but it isn’t doing much, I hope it eventually looks like yours because that looks amazing! I am in upstate NY zone 5b and also have very long cold snowy winters and so look forward to spring to see things come back to life! Thank you for sharing your gorgeous gardens! ❤️

Thank you for the encouragement, Pat! It means a lot to me. I have heard from several gardeners that they find foxgloves don’t reseed for them so you are certainly not alone. I do let some of the seed stalks ripen before cutting them back, and shake the seed around the borders in late summer. I am certain your Queen of Sweden will be beautiful! The first year with her was fairly slow, although I planted her from a container and not bare root, but the deer munched her to a nub that first season as there was nothing else in my garden yet. She really comes into herself in years three and four! 💐🦋🌻

Yeah this is Gene from Pennsylvania I do 30 gardens at memorial Park and I've been doing it for 18 years and I use egg yolk and water to keep the deer off things I don't need to have to do it one time to begin part of the year and then that's it I don't have to use that liquid fence or any of that stuff and I have 30 gardens out there so try it it really works
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gene, I will give it a try once I run out of Liquid Fence. I’ve been using up a big bottle of concentrate I bought last year. In my area I do have to reapply particularly in the early spring and late summer when the deer pressure is at its worst.

I am currently redesigning the garden that I inherited from my grandmother and you have inspired me so much. Thank you for explaining and giving us the names of all your beautiful plants. I just ordered the queen of sweden rose for a flower bed. And I'm so excited. Did you plant yours in a group or is it just one single plant? It looks stunning. Thank you for your videos. I can't wait for another tour!💕

I love how you interplant everything and it looks so full. Question: How do you keep leaves on roses from getting fungus in close proximity to other plants? I live in Virginia and humidity causes a lot of black spot, etc. Even though I give them room for air flow.
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill Жыл бұрын
Hi Katherine, I think the best answer is what you've hinted to which is climate. I don't really deal with black spot because we are very dry and windy here on the east side of Washington state. However, we can suffer from powdery mildew, and that typically worsens with dry hot weather. I've recently learned that planting salvias under roses is a great way to help with black spot, as the salvias release a type of sulphur which inhibits the growth of fungus. I plan to add lots more salvias to my garden in the future!

How did you prep your beds when they were new, in terms of soil/compost/mulch etc. I have many new empty beds on our new property and its such a task to get them filled and fertile (super sandy soil)
@HoneyHill
@HoneyHill Жыл бұрын
The first year I added a lot of organic compost and soil conditioner from G&B. I have clay soil so I was trying to loosen it up. You would want to add as much organic material to your beds particularly if they are sandy.

Just viewed your charming garden. Skagit Valley gardening can be a real adventure! My foxgloves are so lovely and bachelor buttons are all self sowed. But with all of the rain this Spring, all of our radishes looked great but we’re rotting underneath! Hostas are growing like mad too! Thank you for sharing your wonderful plantings. Oh and Lowes have all of their discounted flowers and so many of our plantings have come from there❣️❣️🌹🌹💐💐🐓🍓

Hi Mary Anne, thank you so much! I live in Spokane County, but Skagit Valley is beautiful! I used to live in north Seattle and loved to visit Mt Vernon when I could. We had a lot of rain this month which is atypical for dry Spokane, but the garden has loved it! So nice to have a break from using our irrigation system too.

I’ve been WAITING to watch this video! The cover was sooo beautiful!! Did you know you can prune your roses back to one third after the first flush because they will continue to get taller. I guess you Mill on the Floss is on a hill so that probably won’t be a problem but if you have any other giant roses. Aah this is all coming together so well for you! 🤍🤍 The roses are amazing. I will definitely have to try smelling irises next spring too 😂

Adaline, thank you so much! Yes, I may do a little size management on Lichfield Angel in the front border.
