This case is not something that can easily be judged on Democracy good and China bad so he is innocent logic. There are elements to consider. Imagine if British man, who has Chinese citizenship, living in London organises protest designed to demand independence of certain regions (Scotland or Northern Ireland) and withdraw Westminister, and asks Chinese government to sanction UK, how would you feel if you are British? Whether you like it or not, he would be considered to be national security threat to the UK and jailed. This is what exactly it is. Jimmy Lai is Chinese man having British citizenship living in Hong Kong who has organized protest that is designed to incite HK independence and withdraw government, and asked US government to sanction China whilst taking money from it.
