Hong Kong's Super Rich and Mega Poor: Hong Kong has overtaken New York to become the city with the highest concentration of ultra-rich people in the world. But many of the city’s poor have been left behind by the government’s focus on exponential growth.

The government of Hong Kong has offset extremely low taxes by leasing state-owned land to property developers charging huge rents. ”If you’re not coming from a wealthy family, then you have no expectation or hope of purchasing your own house,” says politician and activist Nathan Law. With limited access to state housing, many are forced to live in dangerous and often illegal living conditions. ”Sometimes you can see the rats running along the ceiling,” Auntie Har says of her dingy accommodation. The growth of philanthropy to help the young has done little to help the aging population; in the absence of a comprehensive welfare system, many have been made homeless. Cherry, the child of manual labourers, sees personal wealth as the only way to secure her parents’ future. “ At the moment, my parents are raising us up and when I grow up and they’re old I can earn money and look after them.”

You know, saying that doesn't hurt the rich people, it hurts the poor people who could have earned money by selling expensive things to the rich. Luxury goods and services (non-sexual) are a key component to get the money to flow back from the rich to the poor. Opinions like yours make the rich not want to flaunt their money so the money just end up pilling up in savings since there is a limit to how much money is spent on essential things and it's kind of unreasonable to just expect them to give money away for free.

When a rich person buys some expensive shit the designer of that thing gets paid and they pay taxes and use that money on food, rent etc making that money go from the rich persons bank account back into poor peoples hands. The rich people have so high incomes they can't use it all up on cheap stuff within the time spann it takes for them to get paid again. Personally I would rather have them spend $17000 on one bag rather than the same amount on multiple cheaper ones since it's better for the environment to make one bag than multiple. The best thing would be if they spent money on different services since producing services is significantly better for the environment and is something that poor people can do easily. The only bad thing about rich people buyig expensive things is if those things end up in the trash when they get bored with them rather than donate or even sell them again. The fact that you don't get this showes that you don't know shit about how the economy works making you the dumb one and if you try to say something like they should just give away money for free then if you really think people should be made to give away money without getting anything for it, how about you be the first one to do that? Give away everything you own including your home, car, all your savings and things to someone homeless and see if you still think that's a reasonable thing to expect from people.

What path would you imagine there would be for the "poor people" to be making money off of luxury goods? I agree, I find these trinkets wasteful and ultimately useless. I am by no means wealthy, but I work hard and I am comfortable. If I spend some extra money, it is never on bags, or shoes or extravagant clothes with big brands on them. I spend the money on my home, and I would like to travel to beautiful parts of the world if I could. Flashy things and fast cars will not take my attention, and I don't admire the people who own them any more than I would if they did not have them.

I know, that world wide, the gap between the two classes are widening. However, Hong Kong's, seems worse than I imagined. I admit to being a little shocked. I'm glad that Mabel and her purses were only a small part of the documentary. I wish that if we learn more about her in the future, we see her volunteering a soup kitchen, instead of shopping or playing at Instagram. What an odd coincidence, homelessness and poverty is climbing since Hong Kong became another province of the communist regime. The Hong Kong politicians are required to appeal to the CCP or else risk jailing or losing their jobs. What the common Westerner sees right now is that Hong Kong has broken apart from the imperialist colonial rule of Brian, and now it is free and growing it's economy. The truth is that it's economy has been declining since then, and China owns Hong Kong, it isn't independent. Hong Kong was growing under British rule because the British didn't actually rule it, they had no intervention but required the Hong Kong politicians to get permission from the British parliament to do anything. The thing is, Hong Kong didn't have a seat on the parliament, so they couldn't get permission to implement socialist policy. The lack of politicians intervening in the Hong Kong economy while it was technically under British rule is what grew the economy so far. All the poverty and homelessness and fleeing is because the CCP is taking its stake in Hong Kong. The politicians are implementing rules on when housing and construction can be built, which is what's causing the housing crisis focused on in the video. Like how LA says houses can't be built or buildings can't be expanded or buildings can't exceed certain heights from shadows interfering with sunlight that politicians prefer over no homeless people

Nathan Law omitted pollution in his list of top things that annoy Hong Kong people. The so-called local government does nothing at all to regulate the influx of money, which drives the real estate market up by 15 to 20% per annum. It isn't about implementing new taxes and voting more regulations. Nope, it's about common sense. Tycoons and wealthy owners can throw in as much money as they want but they have to give back to the local community and pay higher taxes on profits made out of speculation.

I lived in China for a bit, about an hour away from Hong Kong by ferry. The rent for a comparable place was much more in HK.

Rents are very expensive which tends to drive up the price of other goods and services. Hotel accommodation in Hong Kong is expensive compared to many other Asian cities. As another poster said, in nearby Shenzhen, you get a lot more space of a similar quality for considerably less. Agree though that transportation in HK is very reasonably-priced (and highly-efficient), and eating out doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg, if as you say, you are selective. Hong Kong is an amazing place though, and even though I have visited many times, I still feel a sense of excitement as the plane descends into the airport.

There are so many videos about this ridicilous wealth gap between rich and poor in HK... Its insane how poor lives there, in small cages where rents are almost 1k HKD. And families need to live at HK 3years before they are accepted to citys housing.. This what i have learned through some research.
