Cage Dwellers (2010): Despite its wealth, Hong Kong is leaving its poor to rot in squalid conditions. With one toilet per floor and just a few square feet to their name, thousands of cage dwellers live no better than animals.

Why are the UK's poor getting poorer?

"Many can't afford three meals a day or even water, the rent is not even cheap!" says human rights activist Sze Lai. She introduces us to 79-year-old Dai, who has spent 30 years in a cage. Ten other men share his room. Piled up to the ceiling, their cages would look shocking in a zoo. A chief worry is hygiene. 8-year-old Jessica lives with her mother in a cubicle too small to let a grown man stand. She points to the only toilet on their floor: "I hate it. People above throw dead rats down here". Although the need for public housing is dire, nothing is being done to eradicate cage dwelling. With only half of the government elected by universal suffrage, the poor just don't have a voice.

I am a 69-year-old Brit who had the privilege to spent 4 years (1964 to 69) of my late childhood in HK when it was still a British Colony. I left at the age of 16. These conditions have always existed and it is nothing new. No one, and I mean absolutely no one has ever done anything to really help those people and trust me there were far worse conditions to be seen than you showed here, bad enough as they are. Look into what was once called the walled City for starters. I loved the place and the people and I still do. I was there while Mao had his cultural revolution and many refugees from the mainland lived in hiding for fear they would be sent back across the border to certain death if they were found. They lived in packing crate shanty town dwellings hidden in many obscure places. During the frequent typhoons, many were killed in landslides. I feel so bad for those folk. No one ever did squat for them, and they were always the true backbone of Hong Kong. Bless all you Hong Konger's Deep Respect.

As devastating as the Great Leap Forward was for China, I’m sure it as equally as detrimental to HK. It amazes me how selectively world history is taught, seemingly all across the world. Here in America grade school students get the same rehashed lessons about the Holocaust every year. Meanwhile it wasn’t until I was in my 20’s reading on the internet that I found out about the Great Leap Forward, the Holodomor, etc.

eewre, ....You're an idiot! In a typical American city these people would be living in tent and cardboard encampments -- until the police do a sweep and throw away ALL of their belongings (with exception of what they are wearing or carrying in their arms) ....and then they just migrate to other places. THAT is the disgrace! At least in Hong Kong they have actual shelter and can leave their goods securely while they are out.

I worked in Hong Kong as a domestic helper years ago. I've seen situations like these and couldn't believe it. I've seen lots of elderlies collecting tin cans, newspapers, discarded boxes and wondered if they had children..... And if they had, why would they allow their parents to sort garbages everyday? I couldn't really believe I was in a world class city. For several times, I tried helping some elderlies pushed their carts out of the road. What a life.

I agree but in the same breathe i feel increasingly guilty the more i watch these documentaries. Im british and quite lucky to be living in a house in a country full of wealth, education, quite safe, no extreme weather in my area etc. But at the same time my country is full of greed. I am seeing the gap between rich and poor so much more especially my country in comparison to others. I recently watched a documentary about the poor in vietnam and they said it takes a year for the poor to even earn $30 dollars. At the moment im in a situation where i dont have income, i have no job, limited savings and most of my money is going on rent. Its been hard to have money to buy food. A few weeks back i only had £12 for food for a whole month. I was worried and for me i thought that was a struggle. After seeing those documentaries i became aware that although i was poor for my countries standards i was rich compared to others. I started to realise i dont need to spend £1-£2 on something (which over here is believed to be 'cheap' 'inexpensive ') i realised instead i can buy many cheap basic things for 25p etc, i didnt need to spend the whole pound... These documentaries really open my eyes to inequality, corruption and greed of pretty much all the countries in the world. I wish one day that everyone will realise you can live peacefully and care about others, to share and build each other up and that each of us make the effort to do good in the world. If everyone, EVERYONE, did that then noone would ever need to experience suffering in the short time they have on this planet.

i used to live in hk for 4 yrs. My hk colleagues never invited me into their homes bcos they said its very small. But a few times i managed to visit their public ghettos and was shocked. So, on many weekends i invited some of my closest colleagues to come over my apartment to chill out, cook meals, watch movies, sang karaoke, play mahjong, etc. Some will stay over and sleep in the living room or bedrooms. I was in a 3 bedroom/2 bathrooms apartment. Bigger than the average apartments in hk. Those were some of the best weekends i had cos we had fun and it took their worries away. Bcos im not a bar hopping person, so i rather have my friends come over where they can drink till sunrise. We never had any bad incident. Just lots of laughter and bad karaoke singing. And it was nice to have my friends sleepover on weekends. Those were fun days.

If you’re American go outside and look around. The cage homes are actually better than the way we treat our homeless. I live right in the heart of the Bay Area California known as one of the wealthiest places to live and half of my city is tent shanties. Sure people will say they are addicts or criminals but I promise you they did not choose to be there. A cage would be an upgrade. Hell, in the last year, I myself have gone from living in a nice house with a backyard to living in the back of a box truck with deep cycle batteries and solar and use public restrooms with no shower. And I’m a full time “essential worker”. If you think Hong Kong is to be ashamed of this you’re wrong. We all are.

I just watched recently about the coffin homes in Hong Kong and most of the residents there were previously “cage dwellers” as this video stated. Most of them were also applying for public housing but they said it takes 5-6 years at best to get a response from the government. It really disgusts me how most taxes goes to the pockets of the rich, I’d rather it goes to the unfortunate than to the corrupted. It pains to think that these elderly gentlemen passed away in such inhumane conditions as this was recorded back in 2009 😢

Hong Kong has the worlds most expensive real estate prices due to speculative buying from rich investors, this caused the price of rents to become unbelievable. Many landlords dodge legal restrictions and subdivide apartments (as shown), the price for these can be HK$4000. The government does not address the issue as its in the pockets of land developers so no measures are taken to address this problem.

the same thing's going on in all US cities. It's called "Agenda 21" and the government is handing out tons of $$$ for developers to build high rises. However, low income neighborhoods are being demolished to make way for expensive high rise projects.

Duh! "expensive real estate prices" are always because of buying from "rich investors".

In a few years England will be exactly the same. Already multiple people are sharing one bed flats. There are six people living in the one bedroom flat above me and soon enough all accommodation will be dangerously overcrowded.
