SZ had said exactly .... Nonsense. UK ruled Hong Kong for nearly 150 years. Why did UK not introduce democracy over 100 years ago? Or even before 1945 or before 1949? What could China do at that time? Why did UK want to introduce democracy only when HK was about to be returned to China?

I think it is time for Anson chan to make a reappearance to explain to both sides what is going on. I see clueless mainlanders and clueless westerners blaming each other. I feel Anson chan is the best to make everything come to light for both sides to quench the hatred in the comment sections. Someone needs to make a neutral report with explanation with Chinese and English subtitles.

As an immigrant to western society due to communist regime in China, or due to your own country's political corruptions, I just want to ask people who leaves China or their own countries this question....why the heck do they leave their countries if they claim to love and be so devoted to their countries???? Let me guess...Would it be for freedom and a better living and qualities of life!!!

Most of the time, it is only rich or skilled people that can migrate. It has nothing to do with freedom. I live in NZ. We have migrants from HK, Taiwan, USA, UK, mainland China, India etc... We also have a few famous billionaires from USA - Thiel and Cameron.

Patti Pidde loving one’s country does not mean one must believe his or her country is perfect or it is the best country in the world. Many Chinese did choose to leave China to pursuit better education and better life. I can assure you , all these overseas Chinese are fully aware of China’s problems, but It will not stop us from identifying ourselves Chinese, and It will stop us from loving the country that made us who we are today. Most important of all, we will not deny our own blood. Instead, we will try our best to make it a better place.

Why was that important? The system in Hong Kong ran very well when she was the Chief Administrator of Hong Kong. Back then, no one was persecuted and kidnapped to Britain for their dissident voice on colonialism. Hongkongers were free to say anything and do anything under the rule of law. Why would anyone want to have the right to have one-citizen-one-vote if the governor of Hong Kong did not try to trample on the freedoms of Hongkongers. Take a look at the situation in Hong Kong now. The chief executive is there more to please Beijing than to serve Hongkongers, mainly because she was basically appointed by the People's Congress of China, not elected by Hongkongers.

But during her tenure as Chief Executive, there were no mass demonstrations involving millions of protestors on the streets.Currie Lam is to be blamed for pushing the extradition law. Now, she has to face the music and the wrath of her people. She apologised but the people still does not trust her. They label her as a puppet of Beijing and taking instructions ,slavishly. .

Do the people of Hong Kong still hold rights granted to them in the : “ English Bill of Rights of 1689 ? “ This good news might help calm the political stress in Hong Kong China. English Bill of Rights 1689 that are still in effect are (1) That the pretended power of suspending the laws or the execution of laws by regal authority without consent of Parliament is illegal; (2) That the pretended power of dispensing with laws or the execution of laws by regal authority, as it hath been assumed and exercised of late, is illegal; (3) That the commission for erecting the late Court of Commissioners for Ecclesiastical Causes, and all other commissions and courts of like nature, are illegal and pernicious; (4) That levying money for or to the use of the Crown by pretence of prerogative, without grant of Parliament, for longer time, or in other manner than the same is or shall be granted, is illegal; (5) That it is the right of the subjects to petition the king, and all commitments and prosecutions for such petitioning are illegal; (6) That the raising or keeping a standing army within the kingdom in time of peace, unless it be with consent of Parliament, is against law; (7) That the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law; (8) That election of members of Parliament ought to be free; (9) That the freedom of speech and debates or proceedings in Parliament ought not to be impeached or questioned in any court or place out of Parliament; (10) That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted; (11) That jurors ought to be duly impanelled and returned, and jurors which pass upon men in trials for high treason ought to be freeholders; (12) That all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void; (13) And that for redress of all grievances, and for the amending, strengthening and preserving of the laws, Parliaments ought to be held frequently. (14) And they do claim, demand and insist upon all and singular the premises as their undoubted rights and liberties, and that no declarations, judgments, doings or proceedings to the prejudice of the people in any of the said premises ought in any wise to be drawn hereafter into consequence or example; to which demand of their rights they are particularly encouraged by the declaration of his Highness the prince of Orange as being the only means for obtaining a full redress and remedy therein. From Wikipedia English Bill of Rights 1689 Legal status The Bill of Rights remains in statute and continues to be cited in legal proceedings in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, particularly Article 9 on parliamentary freedom of speech.] Following the Perth Agreement in 2011, legislation amending the Bill of Rights and the Act of Settlement 1701 came into effect across the Commonwealth realms on 26 March 2015 which changed the laws of succession to the British throne. Part of the Bill of Rights remains in statute in the Republic of Ireland. Modern recognition Two special designs of commemorative two pound coins were issued in the United Kingdom in 1989 to celebrate the tercentenary of the Glorious Revolution. One referred to the Bill of Rights and the other to the Claim of Right. Both depict the Royal Cypher of William and Mary and the mace of the House of Commons, one also shows a representation of the St Edward's Crown and the other the Crown of Scotland. In May 2011, the Bill of Rights was inscribed in UNESCO's UK Memory of the World Register recognizing that: All the main principles of the Bill of Rights are still in force today, and the Bill of Rights continues to be cited in legal cases in the UK and in Commonwealth countries. It has a primary place in a wider national historical narrative of documents which established the rights of Parliament and set out universal civil liberties, starting with Magna Carta in 1215. It also has international significance, as it was a model for the US Bill of Rights 1789, and its influence can be seen in other documents which establish rights of human beings, such as the Declaration of the Rights of Man, the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights.[28] As part of the Parliament in the Making programme, the Bill of Rights was on display at the Houses of Parliament in February 2015 and at the British Library from March to September 2015 edited Text of “ English Bill of Rights 1689 “ An Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Settling the Succession of the Crown Whereas the Lords Spiritual and Temporal and Commons assembled at Westminster, lawfully, fully and freely representing all the estates of the people of this realm, did upon the thirteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred eighty-eight [old style date] present unto their Majesties, then called and known by the names and style of William and Mary, prince and princess of Orange, being present in their proper persons, a certain declaration in writing made by the said Lords and Commons in the words following, viz.: And whereas ..... That the pretended power of suspending the laws or the execution of laws by regal authority without consent of Parliament is illegal; That the pretended power of dispensing with laws or the execution of laws by regal authority, as it hath been assumed and exercised of late, is illegal; That the commission for erecting the late Court of Commissioners for Ecclesiastical Causes, and all other commissions and courts of like nature, are illegal and pernicious; That levying money for or to the use of the Crown by pretence of prerogative, without grant of Parliament, for longer time, or in other manner than the same is or shall be granted, is illegal; That it is the right of the subjects to petition the king, and all commitments and prosecutions for such petitioning are illegal; That the raising or keeping a standing army within the kingdom in time of peace, unless it be with consent of Parliament, is against law; That the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law; That election of members of Parliament ought to be free; That the freedom of speech and debates or proceedings in Parliament ought not to be impeached or questioned in any court or place out of Parliament; That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted; That jurors ought to be duly impanelled and returned, and jurors which pass upon men in trials for high treason ought to be freeholders; That all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void; And that for redress of all grievances, and for the amending, strengthening and preserving of the laws, Parliaments ought to be held frequently. In fact that the majority of Hongkongers do not support those so called are protesters, those protesters in fact were rioters. Those rioters blocked the HK airport, deprived the tourists’s freedom, were beating up ordinary people, deprived the freedom of ordinary Hongkong people and undermined the economy of Hongkong. Those rioters and Anson Chan kept making misleading statements and misinformation of the situation of Hongkong. The central government in fact gives Hongkongers to choose our leader (the one person one vote). Our CEO, Madam Carrie Lam worked hard to implement the one person one vote during 2014 - 2017. However, the liberty party of HK rejected it. I want to stress that Hongkong police is professional.

The issue is the vague definition of so called high autonomy for HK. No way to clarify, measure, trace and monitor its effectiveness. Of coz some party could still breach the basic law from the remainder clauses like 23 or itself, but the clearly defined autonomy could still serve as a firewall and as the basis to pinpoint the root cause.

People in many western countries let their kids to study and learn Mandarin, which will give them more opportunities in the long term future. Democracy is important. But in the end you need to make people, young people's life better, to solve structural economic problems. Both Beijing and pro-democracy leaders should have peaceful discussion. Beijing has no intention to damage HK, but it is also true they don't have much experience to deal with a democratic society. Beijing government is not as strong as they look, they have fear and worry in their heart. Mutual understanding is foundation for future development of HK.

The Hong Kong government was simply following the US's 2 stage voting system, nomination and voting. There are only 0.02% of people can actually take part on the nomination process, then follow by 1 man 1 vote so-called universal suffrage. What Hong Kong people rejected was the democratic system of the USA. Anson Chan has the Kuomintang family root way back to her grandfather, a general in Chang Kai Shek's army and has no intention to help China and Hong Kong to succeed in the one country two systems, all her opinions are biased. Benedict Rogers and Vic Mallet both refused entry to Hong Kong because they encouraged and gave platforms to the Hong Kong Independence Party, they are separatists and illegal.

Hong-Kong is a treasure house of the West. The claims of freedom, universal Suffrage and Quasi democracy, is none but a rhetoric, hyperbole of legal jargon, aptly exploited and by Western politics. Leave Hong-Kong citizens live in harmony. Democracy is reward for honest endeavours, not rhetoric and an performance of languistic skill of a traitor to her own race.

It's precisely you kind of Oversea Chinese that's the problem of China. I too am an oversea Chinese for 60 years, in UK 🇬🇧. I am Chinese will be always, when white people live overseas, the always remains loyal to their ethnic origin. ANSON CHAN never regard herself Chinese, she call herself Hong-Konger. That is the title given to the Hong-Kong people by the last governor of Hong-Kong, Chris Patton. ANSON CHAN was the first Secretary. She's a traitor to her race. Be proud to be Chinese. The Japanese are very proud of their ethnic identity, matters not where they live. Anson Chan, Martin Lee, Joshua Wong are the main instigator of the rioters movement now. Democracy has to be earned not by war and coerson. Democracy works when the people of the country understand the essence of democracy. Politicians use the fragile ideology to control and manipulate the young people and less inform. Democracy is a very deadly political tool. In the name of that. Much evils are masked. The three agitators are wealthy, Joshua Wong is heavily funded by 🇺🇸. DEMONCRACY will be part of China 🇨🇳aim, once it attained economic and national security goal. China will no be weak and vulnerable to the hegemony control of the Western world. It has suffered for 150 years in modern history. It will not see that repeated. When a group of people from Jiaoling( Hakka Villiage) including my father enrouted back from Santao port to Myanmar, where he was born, after world war II by an oceanliner, they had to stop over in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong they were treated by colony power very badly, i think, then the thought of Hong Kong liberation ingrained in his mind till he died in 1987. Too bad that he did not have a chance to witness the return of Hong Kong back to China in 1997. For that i felt very bad untill now. Now here what i have for my father, rest in peace and be happy, Hong Kong is backed to the country that you loved dearly. And the country is progressing day by day. I will carry on your wish dady: Why should China to adopt so call De-More-Cracy like DPP from Taiwan Island and yellow umbrella group from Hong Kong. what is wrong with the system of governing the way it is in China? Isn't it China is doing better to alleviate more than 400 millians people from poverty under the current system and better yet becoming world second industrial country. China imported even Buddhism from India. Any system is becoming no good when becoming extreme. So China the way it goes ism with China characteristic is better suited to such a big population. Awhile back when i visited Texas, an oil industry executive told us that you, Chinese do not have communism in their blood but only capitalism. So whatever suit to the country the best and go for it, don't let outside intimidate what you are doing the best so far. No need to warship either communist nor democracy.

Sad reality that Hongkong’s future is geared towards metamorphosing into what China is and what it stands for. It is a hard fact and HK will face a lot of resistance but sadly the fate is inevitable. It’s worth the fight??!! But HK’s salvation lies in the collapse of communism in China, which is a wishful thinking. Powerful world leaders can influence in some way, but if the leadership of China is headstrong arrogant, selfish and ignorant then not much can be achieved. Fingers crossed and wishing Hongkong all the luck in the world. Small bodies of water, even with resistance will eventually end up in the ocean.

HK did well from late 1970s mainly because China started to open up slowly from 1978 and HK was like front office for western countries who wanted to access to big China market. HK benefitted! Now that China is opened up fully 100%, the western countries themselves go directly to Shanghai or Beijing or Shenzhen. So, the 1 country 2 systems policy is not going to be feasible anymore. HK people should WISE-UP!

This evil woman, she speak with tongue like a dagger delivering false words, and is rotten through and through. She was appointed as the 2nd on charge at the turn over of sovereignty to assist the 1st Chief Executive Tung C.W. because she, as the last Chief Secretary of the British Colonial era was familiar to the run of the Civil Service. Instead of assisting, she actively pulled Tung's leg and set traps for him. Leading,at least in part, to the difficulty of administration of the HKSAR. Since her retirement, she actively speaking against HKSAR Goverment and carry out numerous subversive acts, to the detriment of H.K. at large. She is still receiving a handsome sum of Pension monthly, and various other benefit as a retired Government Employee. However, her action and words are in total contravention to the code of conduct that all Goverment employees are required to observe. She should be stripped of her status as such, and deprived of her monthly pension and benefit. These, Hong Kong Goverment is still paying while she is actively harming H.K. all the time. She is first a British dog, and now an American wolf.

I can’t agree with what she said. In the recent HK movement, Young HK people call themselves HKnese (not Chinese) and hold the big fat British flag walking on the street advocating HK being independent. If that is not unpatriotic, then what is that?

2 systems refer to socialism for mainland as usual, while continue present capitalism in HK until 2047. Not ' democracy ' and ' communism ' mutual existence within China's political system. While with Capitalism remain intact ; China will get to collect more annual taxes from businesses; continue to enjoy the established high foreign capital inflow through HK gateway and easy access to oversea markets.

Dorji Lew never heard of anything that she had fought for freedom or democracy while Hong Kong was still an colony of Britain. Does Hong Kong people had more democracy, more rights to rally, protests and more opportunities to make their own voice under Britain’s governance? The answer is obviously no. All this woman’s words are full of typical western style hypocrisy. Even she looks like an old, kind and harmless lady, what she has done is more dangerous than a terrorist actually

Although the Chinese government promised the one country two system it was not out of sincerity. The Chinese government will break their promise at their convenience, it was an empty promise. But it is still to be upheld by the HK people. Not only because this is all they have but because they have the justice of it on their side. They can legitimize their outcry and it lets the world hold the Chinese government accountable.
