Brings back memories. My dad was a chef in an upscale banquet restaurant in HK, but we were still poor with 4 boys to raise. He would get home at 10pm at then we would go out for late night meals at the local dai pai dongs because that was the only meal that we could share together as a family. Dad said some of the foods were just as good and sometimes better than the upscale restaurants because they tend to specialize in a few dishes. Regardless, eating at dai pai dongs are fond childhood memories for me.

Thank you so much for you kind comment Romain! We're glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some good memories for you. It's very true that Hong Kong's Dai Pai Dong (and I'm sure the ones that don't exist anymore too) have a great and unique atmosphere- they truly are an important part of this city's history and food culture that will hopefully be preserved into the future. :)

This is another brilliant vlog of Hong Kong. It is nice to get to know Hong Kong from the locals and this time from Irene Jeh. She explained the history behind so well. Hope the Dai Pai Dong survives and wish to visit them on my next visit to HK. Vienne deserves applause too for the flawless camera work and translation as well. Keep up the good work guys and I am absolutely okay to watch anything about Hong Kong in the future vlogs. Love Hong Kong.

I shared the history w my 70 yo mom and she was surprised to learn something new and was also disappointed to hear there are less than 30 stalls left. My mom loves eating at these stalls, but the problem was that we visited hk during my summer break, which meant hot humid weather. I hated the heat which meant my mom never had the chance to eat at these outside stalls when we visited.

I think that the dish featured in CNN's Parts Unknown, featuring Anthony Bourdain, he had similar dishes like you had. If he talked about it, then you know you're in for a real treat. May he Rest in Paradise. The people who eat the same food like you, who travel, and who have experiences with people outside their culture, are truly living, and we will carry on your legacy.

Da pai dong still happening but the third generation have open them inside the stores. A friend of mine is the 3rd generation he got the da pai dong recipes from his grandma. He also said he missed those outdoor stalls. If you look closely you may find restaurants with dai pai dong recipes. Even those stall can’t be opened you still enjoy the recipes. But the feeling is much different. I remember once eating in open sudden rain fall we rushed to put the dinner under the cover. 😂

Agreed, many dai pai dong are now in cooked food centres where the government incentivised them to move in the 1970-90s. Some of them are great, but the experience is very different for sure. Thanks for watching and more videos coming soon!

@@HongKongHoods Grampa just told me a funny story about dai pai dong stalls. Before HK government have animal control departments. They always have stray dogs wondering on the streets. In those early days when the costumers eating they always throw their chicken bones onto the grounds. Those strays would fight for the bones under the table. And they could overturn the diner table anytime. Wish I could seen those scenes. 😂

Deep in the recesses of Yat Tong Housing Estate in Tung Chung, Lantau Island is a 24 hour dai pai dong. Many people who live there - and we are talking 20,000 people - work at the airport and do shift-work so when they knock off they have a place to get decent food. We found it courtesy of some Chinese aircrew who live near us and it became a regular Friday night/Saturday morning ritual to stuff ourselves with good food and and a place to top up on Tsing Tao. At first the locals found it strange that a bunch of gwailos would roll up at 2am to eat but very soon, tables were pushed together, food was eaten and an array of dodgy drinking games - which we always lost (or won, depending on your perspective) - were played. That lasted about 8 years. Government inspectors, determined to prevent any enjoyment, moved in, Covid hit, and people moved away. A shame, but good while it lasted.

But then that place got hyped up and is probably a bit overpriced now... for nice & cheap eats, I highly recommend this 'diamond in the rough' place with a great variety of street food... it's called Tai On Apt. complext on ground level (indoors).... right by Sai Wan Ho station!! Check it out man!

Thank you for the Tai On Bldg suggestion, we love that place, great Hainan chicken spot and a legendary eggette place there among others... we may well consider covering it in the near future :D

Didn't want to take any chances to eat in an indoor restaurant for almost a year! But street restaurants, where customers eat in the open air, are the safest places to eat during the pandemic👍 Will step out next week to try the two you recommended! Thanks, Sam!

The noodles are over cooked!!! I agree those street vendors are part of the old Hong Kong food culture, it is depending on different level of income families(Even back in the 60s, 70s) not everyone in Hong Kong go to those streets vendors!
