Thanks Sam again for this interesting episode. Yes, very local and traditional Chinese dishes, especially the curry mutton which, only the elderly chefs from the northern parts of China migrated to Hong-Kong can do it. In the popular hotels and famous restaurants in Hong-Kong, perhaps they may have these dishes in the manual, but, the price will be totally different and the taste maybe not that REAL; because 80% of the food cost will be generated into paying the estate lease, rental, staff salaries etc..... All in all, thanks for your informative presentations and explanations thereof.

Hi Sam. Really love your videos and the indepth history to them. You seem to cover pretty much everything (certainly the most popular).....except one where it's just in passing like the duck rice here and the Hainan Chicken Rice. But the Cantonese roast rice (or noodle soup) is (or at least was) a very big thing in Hong Kong. Roast Duck/Goose Rice, Roast Belly Pork Rice, Char Sui Rice, Hainan (White Chopped) Chicken Rice, Braised (Soy) Rice. Suckling Pig Rice. And their noodle equivalents. Suckling Pig and Roast Goose seen as a cut above Belly Pork and Roast Duck. They come with 1/2 a salted egg, ginger/spring onion oil, a token gesture of a Chinese leaf vegetable to add colour contrast rather than to be healthy. I would say, at least during my time there, it would be one of the top 3 in terms of foods (second only to Dim Sum/Yum Chaa and maybe breakfast noodle soup varieties (fish balls/beef brisket) and congee with fried ghost. I don't think you've covered this except in passing? Why is that?

Don’t think it was possible to be located in Admiralty in 1948. By that time Admiralty was still military owned, unless the owner was asked to cook for the navy solider. 🤔

I am not a fan of curry or mutton but I am a huge fan of Sam's Hong Kong Hoods videos. My family was originally from Hong Kong but we immigrated to the US when I was a small child. We have been back to Hong Kong a few times to visit relatives but the last time we were there was about 10 years ago. All these food videos makes me want to make a trip back and try all the delicious food! Thank you for sharing!!

Thank you Kim, I'm really happy you're enjoying our videos, even if mutton curry isn't your favourite. Glad the videos are inspiring you to take a trip back now that you're living in the US. Hong Kong travel restrictions have ended (as I'm sure you know), so travelling here is once again feasible!

As long as it's not pork or pork based or cooked in lard most Hong Kong Muslims aren't that bothered, although I wonder if the halal meat stall in the TST market sells halal meats?
@HongKongHoods Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that observation! Not sure about TST market. I saw what I thought was a halal meat stall near Haiphong Road... maybe it's that one.

I grew up in between the U.S and U.K in a mixed Muslim/Christian household, I'm not personally religious at all however with that being said I'm incredibly respectful of what both sides of my family where raised with. though. I eat pork but my Dad doesn't though despite not being a remotely religious person, that's just how he was raised.
@HongKongHoods Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing about your family's mixed heritage! That sounds incredibly culturally rich, and I'm sure it has shaped you. Pork is delicious, but likewise, we respect the choices of those that choose not to eat it. I guess restaurants like this provide a great place where people from many walks of life can converge and enjoy delicious food!
@Benya9400 Жыл бұрын
@@HongKongHoods My Dad doesn't mind cooking it though because he's lived in the west for a very long time now, I for one basically grew up on it and still do occasionally eat it, delicious it certainly can be! diversity is a beautiful thing, luckily where I am in the east end of London you get people from all over.

Just order a curry lamb with rice and a single roast duck leg. Then you won't be wasting an extra dish of rice. Happy eating, this place is really a gem in the city.

As you know already Eastern China(Xinjang province) is home to Uyghur Muslims. Is there a community of them in Hong kong at all? especially given that this place served Halal food?.
@HongKongHoods Жыл бұрын

@HongKongHoods Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! There were people of different ethnicities in there, I guess our shots didn’t capture that! If you’re talking about Islam Food in KC, the mutton curry compares well. Different taste to the food as Islam Food mutton curry is slightly thicker I’d say from memory, but both are stellar and fine examples of Islam cuisine in the city!
