China’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong recently asked 14 military-style youth groups to abandon British foot drills and instead adopt those used by the People’s Liberation Army. But, at a flag-raising ceremony on May 4, only one of the groups complied with the request.

I love how people are saying that people were treated so poorly under british administration. People in Hong Kong lived far longer than mainland Chinese due to not having to endure Mao's collectivist policies. And when HK was handed back to China most people with money, education, or democratic values moved to other parts of the commonwealth. Like in canada there is a massive HK population due to the mass exodus of people fleeing the PRC.

You're ignoring the fact that Chinese people lived much worse lives in the late Qing and ROC eras; this is the reason why the PRC was formed in the first place. It took time to lift the massive country out of poverty. Meanwhile in Hong Kong, though they became wealthy due to being a financial "front office" to connect the western world to China, the people of Hong Kong were never allowed any political agency. Every governor was British, courts were British, documents were in English and Chinese people were marginalised, with rampant crime and tens of thousands lived in slums. There was no freedom of press and attempts at decolonisation were violently crushed (just look up the 1967 protests - 51 dead and over 1000 arrested in a week). I would rather have my own country that has agency, even if it is slow growth, than to be a servant to a wealthy master who tosses me a bone now and then.

This year, I participated in the same event showed in the video. The scout association chose us to represent scout to march on a ceremony that happened on May 4th. They requested our group to march in Chinese style, instead of British Style which is the old and normal way. We had to adapt and completely learn how to march in that way, in the span of 3 weeks. The biggest difference between the 2 types of marching is definitely the way our legs move. For British marching, it feels more formal, where as for Chinese Marching, it feels more like walking, but is definitely still coordinated.

@@lakenneth374 I agree that goose step seems unnatural, yet the stiffness of gait gives soldiers an appearance of power, which the British gait style lacks. Anyway, it's a matter of taste.

Umm Nah. They dont have to. By that same logic, if the anglo indians prefer to be considered superior to other indians, then india in general would have to let them keep considering themselves as such. Hong kongers have always looked down on the mainland chinese, while being under colonial rule themselves. A lil pay back doesnt hurt.

Doesn't matter. Those military schools are technically private civilian schools that were set up by private individuals well before the handover. They may have chosen to keep the British-style training and ceremonial procedures but since they are private schools, they don't answer to the government. They have their own curriculum.
