I'll be honest: I really dislike Hong's cinema. I find his style irritatingly monotonous and banal, verging on pretentious. But you've persuaded me to give him another chance

This is why I like him. Especially because I have lived in South Korea for many years. Life is mundane, interesting and complex.

I don't like his works, they all have the same vibe and basically the same actress for eight of them or something. It always look like the same character with minor changes in reactions and dynamics or stimulations

Then don't watch his films. There are several popular directors whose films I avoid because I didn’t like their films. There are other directors that I'd place higher than Hong Sang-soo even though they have made a few films I didn’t care for. What amazes me about Hong Sang-soo is that I have seen 17 of his films and enjoyed every one of them so far. And they are consistently better on second viewing. YMMV

That is why his work is so good. He is creative with his constraints that he imposes on himself. I suggest you watch marvel movies instead.

@@63MGB1He's never made a bad movie. I also enjoy novels that are mundane and minimalist.

@@Carl2988carl I did finally see a film of his I didn't care for called "In Water". Considering that it took watching 20 of his films to find one I thought flopped, that's not too bad!
