Such a simple tool. I just learned something new. Never see any on trucks or buses in Malaysia. They need to be put on every heavy vehicles.

They were being used extensively like 15 years ago with some of the rookie companies. But, you really only occasionally see them on straight trucks anymore. Any driver that actually does a pre/post trip every day will immediately notice a lug backing off, even at a passing glance. There will be a uniform amount of stud sticking out, and even a quarter turn throws off the pattern. I got new steers on a few months ago and whoever did it must have lost a nut and put one on for a super single. It's a little thicker, and every time I think it's backing off. I've been driving commercial trucks since I was 16, and only had lugs loosen twice. Once was a Dayton setup that spun the rim and cut off the valve stems.

Thanks for posting this, when I was changing garbage truck tires, this was part of my job, we would point them clockwise with 2 being red or orange, the driver would use it a full day (technical should be 100 miles), then would come by tire shop and asked us to do them while they wait(sometimes without turning engine off), but would make them leave it, noticed during re torque that cooled ones usually didn't move as much, then with this done, they were reinstalled pointing counter clockwise with all green checks. (I know this is contrary to your recommendation, however, this was something that was argued back and forth until it was decided that as long as it was pointed to another nut, it was OK)

These things have been used in the UK for decades! Are they just starting to use these in the US?
@HonJazzz2 жыл бұрын
Yes, thankfully we are just starting to use them now.

Your both right, but the first generation nut checks had some issues, they would shrink and be harder to reinstall, this could be remedied with a short piece of electrical conduit, but the finer toothed version was a definite improvement, even if it is Chinese.
@thesteveus3 ай бұрын
We use them in mining in Australia, however, if your Landcruiser is constantly driving around on rough ground, the holes in the rim will widen and wear to the point where the wheel falls off with the nut indicators still in place and undisturbed.

Always curious how the Germans go about solving these issues, and wondering if torque multipliers are more widespread in truck wheel service. (Alkitronic, torcUP, Hytorc, RAD, Atlas Copco, Norbar, etc)

I remember seeing those for the first time in Canada on city buses over 20 years ago. Surprised this doesn't seem to be common in the US.

Could the joke be about drivers covering their nuts. (I actually saw a mud flap ornament for sale at a truck stop that was contrary to this)

Its very bizarre how the US doesn't have these already in regular use

Well, in our fleet, the only type of vehicle that ever had wheel loosening issues is the garbage trucks, most trucks don't do the stop and go till there fully, sometimes, over loaded.

Won't work on most cars. Lug nuts tend to be sunk into cavity in wheel design. Not enough room for something like this. These are in widepread use on trucks and other laefe vehicles in the usa. So, a driver is supposed to notice a change in the pattern of ridges from the plastic melting, but they can't be trusted to see an indicator that has rotated until its hitting the wheel hub??? Isn't the orientation that results in indicator bottoming out to hub after only a few degrees of rotation, also limiting how loose lug nut can become? Wouldn't that be a desirable result? I question if someone has the motor skills and observational awareness required to pilot a hulking behemoth of a vehicle if they can't notice a brightly colored flag that is pointed out of line with the others on a wheel, especially if they've been trained to perform that task. I suppose if a lug is loose and indicator bottomed out to hub, and it so happens that lug nut ends up on the bottom when vehicle parked, its harder to notice that small amount of change, since now hub kinda blocks your view. But I expect tbe training to be as simple as, make sure all these pointy things line up, and stoop down enough to be able to see all of them.

Noticed that also, usually one check secures 2 nuts, also color indicates heat ranges, orange and red being higher, but sometimes more difficult to install.

I've been doing semi tires for over 9 years, these are just a waste of time and money and annoying for techs, what's more effective is just using a marker on the lugnut and stud and actually making sure they get tightened correctly when putting wheels back on

@@HonJazzz - Firstly, I didn't waste any more of my time watching the video when I learned it pertained to trucking. Second, in the US, per Title 49, the Federal Government already regulates vehicles to "keep you safe too." You wasted my time. Put it in the title then and I won't call your video "Clickbait." I hope YOU learned something new from this reply. Have a nice day.
