The word lucky doesn't quite describe how close you came to potentially having a very nasty or fatal accident. When you change wheels and tighten the nuts by hand, you should always then move/roll the vehicle a few meters before retensioning the wheel nuts to allow the wheel rims to sit properly on the wheel studs and the nuts to fully contact the rim. If you don't do this the nuts can unscrew themselves and fall off like on SteVAN. If you do loose wheel nuts, it is safe to take one nut from the other rims to replace the missing ones to allow travel to the nearest place to obtain & fit replacement wheel nuts. The type of wheel brace you have are notorious for not allowing you to correctly tension wheel nuts or even for removing tight nuts. I would suggest you obtain a long "breaker bar" and a correct sized socket that fits the nuts properly to allow you to fit or remove wheel nuts correctly and safely. Your wheel brace can still be used though to quickly "spin" the nuts on/off as appropriate. Carrying a few spare wheel nuts with your car jack or vans onboard tool kit is a good idea incase you ever need them. The situation you just found yourself in has probably made your own nuts ride a bit higher than normal.

I think he is just an idiot who does not know how to tighten the wheels. Those are Mag Lug nuts that automatically centered the wheel right before you drop the jack down. Most likely, he did not tighten it again after the wheel is on the ground, only tighten it when on top of Jack or jack stands. Very common problems for an amateur who never work with cars.

You just take one nut off the other wheels

If I torque my lug nuts to 100 ft/lbs as per manufacturer do I need to do this rolling and retorquing?

I had something similar happen to me. I installed a 2” lift on a Jeep Wrangler JK back in 2015 at my job and I kinda rushed it. Well, I drove a total of 2 hours to visit my parents and on the way back I made it into town and felt a weird slight wobble and heard a clunk clunk clunk noise and it almost felt like a flat tire. I pulled into a parking lot and checked all the tires and noticed that my passenger rear wheel lugs where sticking out further that all the rest of the wheels lugs. Sure enough when I grabbed the lugs I was able to hand tighten them. I quickly jacked up the Jeep and every single nut on that wheel was loose. It is a an absolute blessing that the wheel didn’t fly off on the highway going 80 miles an hour or that I didn’t lose a single nut. I tightened them all down and checked all the others. Since then I double check everything I do on anything I do.

Very similar tale to mine. It was so frightening to think of what could have been!!!! And I double check every time now. I also drive off a bit and pull over to check before I'm 100% confident.

Came here after realizing I was driving with only one lug nut on my front left wheel for a whole week! Noticed right before I was about to change a shock. Got no idea how they fell out but for a week my car started violently shaking at higher speeds

Dude, I avoided a pretty big catastrophe!! This could have been fatal actually. I am planning on getting a torgue spanner as a start and keeping the spare wheel nuts in SteVAN in the back somewhere.
@AtlasReburdened5 жыл бұрын
Luck favors the attentive. I would take one nut from the two back wheels to bring it up to 5 nuts on 3 wheels, that way you don't have one wheel with nuts which are way past their safety margins on load tolerance. Having just one off of a wheel is pretty much assured not to cause any damage.
@GivesAMinute5 жыл бұрын
Atlas this is a logical and smart idea, I did not think of it at all tho. Lol!!!! I need to work on being more mechanically minded! hahah!!! I did make it home tho and then I could put on the spares I have!! Lucky!!

Watching this because all 5 of mine just popped off as I was going 35 through town. Same thing noticed my truck was driving a bit weird, I’m only one minute from my destination figure I’ll check it out there, well nope I heard a loud pop and my right drivers side starts to go down, all I think is my tire has popped and shredded by now and then I see the tire is still there but crooked and there’s no bolts. Luckily I found the bolts and they are all still in the hubcap together

That was me today on the freeway! I had only one left as well and found one nearby ! Luckily I took one off the other tire for 3 total and auto parts store was less than a half mile away!

Your car will start to shimmy, then get a progressive wobble and then the cyclic thump with every revolution of the tire, just happened to me after a tire rotation at a Toyota dealership about 1100 miles later once the freezing weather turned warmer, Not a warm fuzzy feeling

Don't you hate it when you nuts fall off LOL So the morale of this story is always make sure you tighten your wheel nuts up everytime your change your wheels. Benon you don't know how lucky you were their, if i was you i'd buy a lottery ticket.

I have to agree with +Tim Areskog. What he doesn't mention though, Please use a Torque Wrench! And please make sure the the rubber of the wheels is not taking the load of the vehicle. Keep the Tyres high enough so you can kick them sideways, but you can't roll them. Most car manuals tell you the exact torque you need for everything in the vehicle, including wheel nuts.
@GivesAMinute5 жыл бұрын
I see this at Supercheap Auto: www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-torque-wrench---1-2-inch-drive/214305.html That could be better than getting a pole for the wheel brace option.

I had my lug bolts off while driving.. Speed was like 30MPH. I have 1983 Rabbit Pickup, really really really slow car. Had to call tow truck. Only one was attached, rest all were gone. Have to fix it tomorrow..

@@GivesAMinute I agree, myself or my car would be fine I think but if the wheel hit someone elses car at high speed, it would be a disaster.. This happened on a highway. Cars speed around 70 MPH. Even a stand still tire for them is life threatning and would cost me more.
