Japanese swords, symbolizing the Bushido spirit, have numerous renowned blades in their history. Even today, many famous swords still exist, but after Japan's defeat in World War II, millions of swords were seized by the GHQ and went missing. Among them was the "Honjo Masamune", a legendary sword passed down through the Shogun family for centuries. Known as a phantom sword, many people still seek its whereabouts.

As a person who has had such a reverence for Japanese swords since I was 8 (now I am 50) , it is so difficult to look at all those piles of swords the soldiers we’re sitting on. Getting ready to be lost, rusted destroyed and not taken care of ! 😢 I hate those pictures

I also hate those pictures, American soldier’s obsession with war trophies is truly disgusting, so many treasures lost to the ignorant.

That "obsession" saved countless swords that would have otherwise been destroyed-thousands upon thousands of swords were brought back to the US, where most of them were at least preserved. There are countless collectors here that care for them and value them highly.@@paulwilliamson3211

Thank you always for your comments! Yes, while the confiscation of Japanese swords by the GHQ was somewhat inevitable, they could have handled them with more care. It's important to learn about each other's countries' histories and cultural backgrounds.

It's absolutely gut wrenching to think of how many of those works of art have been melted down or dumped at sea. I have several guns that are family heirlooms that no one will ever take from me, so I understand how these families must have felt. I've owned several nihonto over the years and have always taken care of them, cleaning them with powder and oiling them, teaching people how to handle them and admire them without leaving fingerprints on the blade. If they weren't so expensive I'd buy more of them just to keep them safe and take care of them.

Since Masamune has been lost, obviously, many forgeries have been submitted, yet none have made the cut.

As an enthusiastic collector of these swords, it was my original hope to return them to Japan, only to find out that they would be snapped in half on entry to their home land.

Why it it surprising so many if his swords still exist? People really think America hurt the count? First off. The american general saved over 4million in a warehouse. 2nd off, jaoan alone has millions and millions of documented swords in existence. They are rare enough(to get a amazing one/famous one) but there's no shortage of 4k dollar swords from the edo period

Thank you for your comment. Yes, you're correct. While there is extensive historical documentation about Honjo Masamune's activities during the Sengoku period in Japan, there is limited information available after the sword's disappearance and its journey to the United States. Therefore, I believe viewers may be more knowledgeable about its current whereabouts and status than I am.

We are losing our WW2 heroes at an alarming rate, some are returning their "war trophies" through the Obone society, (I hope thats correct) we need to locate and return as many of these objects as possible. Imagine someone taking our constitution, or the hope diamond, or George Washingtons saber as a war prize. If anyone knows where the Honjo Masamune is please get it back to the Japanese people.

The famous sword that had just been returned to Japan is the Sanchōmō/Yamatorige, which was a well-known sword in history that was forged by the famous smithing school of Fukuoka Ichimonji.

I love Japan and its people, I lived there for over 2 years. The swords are absolutely amazing. However, I didn't fight in the trenches and islands and see my friends butchered by fanatical Japanese soldiers. They are so dedicated, they should have thought about their swords before bombing Pearl Harbor and dragging us into the war. Then we wouldn't be so sad that all of those priceless treasures were lost. To the victors go the spoils, unfortunate as that may sound. Perhaps we can all learn from those hard lessons and preserve our cultures and heritage. I feel just as bad watching radical American idiots destroying our art and sculptures.
