The way he makes that guitar sound like a harmonica is legendary

That was my first thought and damn it really made an impression on me I hadn’t heard or seen that. Jimmy Herring is a bad son of a gun.

All you Jimmy Herring lovers should check out The Allman Brothers Band 2000 summer tour with Jimmy and Derek Trucks together, those two took it out there! They also played in Frogwings together and that's worth checking out too. Both devotees of the late, great Col. Bruce Hampton.

I like the mix of the guitar work. Best part of this song is there's little going on, subtle changes and low clear notes. Dynamics masterpiece! Makes the song kick ass!

For my money, and Im 64 and I have seen the best from the sixties to the present, Jimmy Herring is the best guitarist ever, apart from Garcia, thats different. Ive seen them all, Mayal, Page, clapton, ronson, Hendrix etc etc, yet none were such an all round professional perfectionsist and yet improvationist as Jimmy Herring, Mr Mayer may get there one day, but he will need a lot of practice.
@dxhydro18 жыл бұрын
Yes, Mayer is pretty amazing but he has to quit making those stupid faces like it's so incredibly painful for hi to hit some of those notes (watch Mayer and BB). And I'm glad you put Jerry on a different level altogether. Not the fastest or most technical but he had a tone and style all his own. I miss the Dead tours and Jerry shows. Glad Widespread is out there. Check out the Hard Working Americans too.
@skipdude377 жыл бұрын
Both Jerry and Jimmie are awesome guitarists. I tend to lean towards Jimmie as the most talented and "one" with his guitar and the music. I agree with Keith Turner on the best of the best list. I have seen all except Hendrix. Just a tad too young at the time. Townsend comes close in terms of the guitar but the Who is a completely different style music. My money is on Jimmie Herring. Hands down.

I heard this in the truck the other day, don’t know nuthin about em really but damn! I took a couple minutes to figure out if that was a lead guitar or a nasty harmonica! Sliding back down into those nasty flat fifths like Trucks but without the slide? This is some in the mud blues and I can’t believe I missed it somehow but I’ll catch up.
@chadcopeland36552 жыл бұрын
he and DTs have some of the same sensibilities. I’ve always heard their similarity on certain runs. but was never able to put a technical name to it: flat-fifths, TY. I can def ‘hear it’ though on a side note, Derek’s brother, Duane is now the main drummer in WSP. he’s terrific too

Interesting change of words happening here! Maybe it's just me. Sounds like WSP is saying "and I steal red pills from the boys in the whorehouse band," I've heard, most of my life, Murray McLauchlan sing "steal red pills for the boys in the whorehouse band"; that was after I corrected myself from hearing "I deliver hand-bills and the steel-red pills for the boys...." Yeah! I don't know what 'steel-red' pills look like-- uhhh, very glossy???
